ABSOLUTELY AMAZING story!!

This story is the second installment in "The FBI Psychics" series. In the first book we are introduced to a 'special' team of Agents who are 'gifted' with finding 'the lost' and helping the dead find rest.

It is in the first book that we are introduced the Special Agent Taylor Jones who is the hard-ass, cool as a cucumber Agent who leads this special team. He also has the gift of identifying those who have the 'psychic' gifts He requires for this elite team.

Shiloh Walker has the perfect touch when it comes to suspense with paranormal elements.
I've always enjoyed her stories, but THE MISSING turned me into a total fangirl for life, and THE DEPARTED just proves that this author knows what she's doing. Romance, intrigue, and paranormal elements are perfectly balanced in this fast-paced suspense featuring FBI guy Taylor Jones and psychic Desiree Lincoln. It's a must-not-miss for anyone who enjoys edge of the seat storytelling.

The Departed is the second in Shiloh Walker’s intensely sensual and intriguing dark paranormal series, The Missing. The Departed, picks up a couple of years after the first book, also titled The Missing, ends. Though part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone. The Departed is a shockingly seductive psychological thriller that hooked me from page one. Shiloh Walker has a wonderful writing style that draws you in to her characters emotional pathways and lets you feel with them what they are experiencing. Romance and taut suspense go hand in hand as we follow a gritty and dark well plotted storyline down a twisting path of deception, betrayal, and madness.

Our hero, Taylor Jones, came across as a very cold and uncaring man in The Missing. The job always comes first. Everything else is fodder. He was so unlikable in The Missing, I was looking forward to seeing how Ms. Walker would redeem him in my eyes here. And redeem him she does. The bulk of the story revolves around Taylor and the reasons he originally started this special task force. His sister disappeared over 25 years ago and since then, Taylor has done everything he could to ensure every child, missing or dead, is found and given closure. A hard and emotionally closed man, Taylor has thick walls built around himself. He draws a strict line between himself and his employees; ensuring none of them ever met the real Taylor. Ms. Walker does a fabulous job of slowly bringing his walls down, one brick at a time, and introducing us to the real Taylor Jones. An intense, conflicted, and emotionally haunted man.

Dez Lincoln is the exact opposite of Taylor. Though her life was nothing more then a series of poverty and foster homes, Dez is an open friendly person who embraces life with joy. A snarky blend of humor and laughter that Dez embraces gives the book a respite from the overall somber feel of it. She loves Taylor but refuses to play his hot/cold emotional game. When she realizes that Taylor is even more closed off after their one night together, she decides that it’s better to leave the job then watch him leave her day by day. Though leaving him broke her heart, it doesn’t shatter or cripple her.

When Taylor sees Dez again after a year, the emotional ties that bind them are still there, as strong and frightening as ever. Taylor realizes that letting Dez walk away was the worst mistake of his life. She completes him and he’ll do anything he can to keep her from leaving again. But Dez doesn’t make it easy for him.

“Are you even listening to me?”
“No.” Dez smiled. “I can’t say that I am. And you know what’s really wonderful about it? You can’t do much more then snarl and growl about it. After all, your not my boss, right?”

The romance between them is hot yet bittersweet. The chemistry between them smolders heavy in the background as they struggle to get past the hurt and pain they left each other with. It’s a major part of the storyline and complements the main arc. Their physical scenes are tasteful and satisfying. It was very easy to get caught up in the emotional currents of these two star crossed lovers as try to find their second chance.

The secondary characters are bold, viable additions to the story as they add layers to the suspense and mystery. Each one is a piece in the puzzle; they make up a solid foundation for our storyline to build upon. As with any good thriller, there are multi sub plots running through the main storyline and each one is a key to the final outcome. Ms. Walker does a fabulous job of maintaining these separate entities without overburdening us with unnecessary information or complicated scenarios. When it all comes together in the end, we are treated to an astounding finale that ties it all together, solid and tight, with no questions left unanswered. Though I figured out rather early who the villains were, the journey into their minds and reasoning was exciting as we are given an exclusive tour of the evil that exists in man. Be forewarned, there is some subject matter in here that may leave you feeling a little raw.

The Departed is a worthy sequel to The Missing and a must read for those readers who love their paranormal romances to be wrapped in dark emotional suspense and intrigue. I do hope Ms. Walker continues with this series.

Pleasantly surprised from what I expected. I was thinking some trashy, smutty romance with a little paranormal thrown in, and a dash of plot to loosely hold the sex scenes together. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was so much more. There are maybe three sex scenes, and all are in context of the particular plot and advancement of the characters' relationship arc. The Departed is a strong new contemporary paranormal which is the second in a series about paranormal investigators who work for the government. This first book in the series was called The Missing. It is not necessary to have read Missing to enjoy this well-written story.

Agent Taylor Jones works for the FBI and has the unique ability to gather those with very special talents to work with him. Although he knows it is wrong, he craves one of his subordinates, Desiree Lincoln. Dez can commune with the dead. She works tirelessly to help them 'depart' after their deaths when they cannot leave due to an often violent end. However, their latest assignment nearly kills her and as a result Taylor tries to protect her. They have a night of wild passion but Taylor locks her out and tells her it can never happens again. But Dez wants Taylor and her independence and quits the team. Taylor realizes how much he misses Dez and hunts her down but finds Dez investigating a suspicious death.

Dez is being haunted by the ghost of a high school jock who died violently. He tells Dez that he was murdered by his friends when he protested the killing of a young girl. But one of these young men has a powerful and influential father. Dez must stop them since they plan to kill the girl on Halloween and it is fast approaching that time. Can Dez save the girl and prevents more deaths before it is too late?

This was quick read that caught my instant attention. The sexual tension between Taylor and Dez is steaming HOT. I also loved the mystery and the murderous characters who were so twisted and evil that I wanted them brought to justice. Since Dez can talk with the ghost many times, she already knows what has happened. It is proving what she knows and how she fights against the deviousness characters who are trying to hide their murder which makes this story so interesting.

Strong characters and scorching hot romance make this story a guaranteed winner!

Taylor Jones and Desiree Lincoln work together in a special branch of the FBI. He’s her boss. They’re attracted to one another, but they’ve kept that attraction under control for quite a while now. Dez is able to communicate with the dead, try to help them overcome whatever issue it is keeping them from crossing over. Taylor has no psychic ability, he’s just always honed in on what to do and how to do it when a case comes to his attention. And he has ghosts of his own, the tragic loss of his young sister so many years ago, something that still haunts him to this day.

Everything changes between them in the blink of an eye - or the speed of a bullet. Dez is shot just as she and Taylor are about to make their escape with a child they’ve rescued. The image of her lying on the floor bleeding tears Taylor apart. His determination to take care of her after being released from the hospital goes south. They spend a night of passion together, but afterward Taylor puts distance between them again. Dez has no success in breaking down his barriers, so she walks away from it all - the job and Taylor.

Working on her own, Dez takes cases wherever spirits call her. Then she meets Nathan, a young ghost who needs Dez to help him save a girl in Taylor Jones’ hometown. As she discovers more about the girl and the boys who want to hurt her, Dez calls for backup - the only man she knows who will drop everything to help. Heading home for an anniversary he dreads but gets through every year, Taylor is close by when he learns Dez needs him. It’s been more than a year since he’s seen her, and not one thing has changed when he gets his first glimpse of her.

Taylor and Dez work together to solve her case, all the while an underlying smoldering surrounds them. When they finally come together again, it’s as raw and intense as the first time. Now Taylor is determined to keep Dez in his life, no matter what he has to do. Breaking through the field of feigned indifference will be the most difficult. Dez has learned not to hope where Taylor is concerned. Even when it seems he’s sincere and wants her with him, she has a hard time letting go to believe him.

The emotion in this book is spectacular. From the exhaustion that dogs Dez as she goes from case to case for months to the fear of the victims she helps to the confusion of the spirits who need her to the sensuality and longing between Taylor and Dez, nearly every page tugs at your heart, drags you deep into despair, tosses you into the throes of passion, pulls anger and grief in equal measure from the depths of your soul. Especially after all is said and done in Dez’s current case but another spirit is keeping her nearby, and this time it’s Taylor who has to live through tragedy and heartache once again.

I hope this series goes on for several more books, that Ms. Walker has plenty of stories in mind for these FBI psychics. It’s intriguing as hell and I love it all. I’m very anxiously awaiting the next book, though this one just hit the shelves and it’s going to be a long wait. It’s definitely worth the wait, however.

Twenty-five years ago Taylor Jones’ little sister Anna disappeared in the tiny town of French Lick, Indiana. Taylor’s family fell apart and Taylor himself never got over the anguish of losing Anna but he channeled that anguish into helping find other missing children as an FBI agent. Taylor heads up a special unit of agents who all have some type of psychic ability that they use to find the children.

One of these agents is Desiree “Dez” Lincoln and she specializes in seeing and speaking to ghosts and helping them move on. Dez and Taylor have a very mutual attraction to one another but neither ever acts on it until one day Dez is injured on the job. After finally acting on their feelings, Taylor shuts down and gives Dez no other option to quit the FBI. Dez sets out on her own to try and help the spirits that come to her and once voice leads her to Taylor’s hometown of French Lick. There is a dark energy in French Lick and a whole lot of secrets both new and old. With Taylor in town for the anniversary of Anna’s disappearance the two are thrown back together and find that together they can maybe save the town and each other.

The Departed is a very dark and thrilling murder mystery with just a dash of romance that will keep you on your toes until the very end. I didn’t know what to expect when I started this book but I was blown away by what I got. From the first page I was sucked into the dark world of missing children, talking ghosts and two of the most stubborn, broken and lovable main characters I've ever come across. This book was everything I never knew I need to read and I am hooked.

Dez and Taylor are such a great and at the same time frustrating couple I’ve ever read about. They both have had very hard lives and both have a very hard time opening up and getting close to people. The sexual chemistry between the two is smoking hot and could almost set the pages on fire. I loved the interaction between the two and I really loved when Taylor let down his guard and showed how much he needs and loves Dez. A lot of the scenes between these two are heart breaking and I had to keep from crying a couple of times.

There is so much going on in French Lick, Indiana and for such a small town a lot of bad stuff has and is happening. This was a much darker book then I expected but in the best way possible. I loved that every time I thought I had everything figured out there would be another twist and we would be off in a completely different direction. There is just enough mystery, suspense, romance and amazing characters to make this one of the best books that I have read in a very long time.

The Departed is the first book that I have read by Shiloh Walker by I am now a fan, a really, really, really big fan. The characters are so well written and the story will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you reading well into the night. There are so few books that really keep my attention and this one had it from the first to the very last page and I cannot wait to read more from these characters and this author. (less)

When Dez Lincoln is seriously injured while saving a child from a horrible predator, her boss, Taylor Jones cannot get the gruesome images out of his mind. Fast forward fourteen months. Dez is working free-lance and overwhelmed with the spirits of those that have passed. Taylor is making his annual visit home to pay tribute to his baby sister, who was abducted when she was six. Both individuals are near their breaking points when they find each other again. Now they have to work together to unscramble cryptic clues left by the ghosts of French Lick, Indiana before someone else is murdered.

The Departed is a gripping, suspenseful story. I was immediately drawn in by Ms. Walker’s talented storytelling and could not put the book down until the very last stone was turned. There were several twists and turns, but never did the volume of clues or characters become overwhelming. Nothing felt contrived. I was guessing what would come next, who was behind what, and how the story would be resolved though out the story.

Although this story is about solving a series of crimes, there is much more at stake than the lives of the citizens of French Lick. At the heart of this story is the fragile existence of two fiercely independent and strong individuals. Both Dez and Taylor are flawed, and doing the best that they can, even when confronted with horrible situations. Both are close to the end of their respective ropes, and in Taylor’s case, maybe even close to taking his own life.

Dez and Taylor fit together perfectly. Ms. Walker creates a couple that needed each other, but were not needy. They are able to get past the rough edges (and there are a lot) to find a way to heal and be whole. They complement one another so well. I was cheering whole-heartedly for Dez and Taylor, and they held my heart in their hands. I cheered their successes and I shed tears in their pain. I love a story that can evoke a wide range of emotions within me.

Although this book is the second in the FBI Psychics Series, I did not read the first, and it is not necessary. This book can be read and appreciated as a stand alone. However, after enjoying this book so very much, I’m adding more of Ms. Walker’s books to my wish list. The Departed has that perfect mix of spectacular plot line, engaging characters and a wide-ranging emotional impact.

Desiree Lincoln is a psychic who can communicate with the ghosts of the dead, those who continue to linger on Earth because for some reason or the other, they have unfinished business that keeps them around without giving them the closure that they require so badly. A part of the team that is headed by FBI Special Agent in Charge Taylor Jones, Desiree or Dez knows no respite from the ghosts that continue to seek her out, wanting and craving the one thing that had been denied from them for so long.

Special Agent in Charge Taylor Jones comes across as a controlled man who seems emotionless to the point of being considered coldhearted. But beneath the tough shields that he puts up to keep emotions at bay lies a soul that continues to churn in turmoil, the hidden depth of pain deep inside of him so vast that its a wonder he is able to function the way he does. He has the uncanny ability of identifying people with special gifts who helps him keep the dark and twisted souls that roam the society at bay, and hopefully prevent another little girl from going missing like what happened to his sister.

For Taylor, there is nothing more dangerous to his peace of mind than letting himself care about someone else, but the way his emotions go haywire whenever Dez is around tells him that remaining aloof when it comes to her is an option no longer available to him. When Taylor’s impeccable shields crack, out comes pouring the passion and desire that he holds in on a tight leash, but the joy of the moments of abandon he finds in Dez’s arms is a short lived one when reality intrudes and Taylor drives them apart with his need to control his emotions.

It is 14 months later that Taylor comes across Dez in the one place where he never thought he would find her. Dez is drawn to a small town in Indiana by a ghost that draws her to the midst of the evil that lurks in the mind of a crazed teenager who is willing to do anything and everything in his power to play out the games that lurks deep inside of his mind no matter what the consequences. But something much deeper and elusive than the evil that lurks in the shadows keeps a hold on Dez until she starts digging to unravel secrets that could forever change the lives of so many people, for better or for worse.

The Departed is a story that definitely has a lot of dark elements to it, and yet or maybe because of it, I found myself totally fascinated with the tale that unraveled. Shiloh Walker has a way of surprising the reader with her villains and she definitely has the talent for muddying up the shades of gray when it comes to right and wrong that just has the reader on tenterhooks. For me, The Departed worked well because I was so in tune with both Dez and Taylor, whose need for one another grounds them and makes them cope better with all the darkness that is so much a part of their daily lives. I had nothing but admiration for both Taylor and Dez who works relentlessly to find the worst sort of scum that wander the Earth and it is a job that I know a lesser person would never be able to handle without breaking apart.

Though the romance aspect of the story was a bit laid back when compared to the suspense and paranormal elements in the story, The Departed nevertheless kept me riveted on the relationship that unfolded between Dez and Taylor as well as the huge hurdles that both Dez and Taylor cross to reach the ultimate truth that seeks to be brought out into the light. The one thing in my opinion that would have made the book better was an epilogue; for me the book tended to end a bit abruptly to bring me the closure that I wanted and needed for both Dez and Taylor.

Heartbreaking at moments and wonderfully moving at times, The Departed is a novel that combines elements of suspense, paranormal and romance to deliver a read that would linger on long after you are done!

A very good book....not great. I enjoyed the plot line and the characters. What I didn't enjoy was having to re-read a few lines to make sure I completely understood who was speaking - or thinking at the time. Maybe it was just me, but at times it was not clear.
The character depth was very shallow and you never felt like you really got to know the two main characters, or why they really felt the way they did about each other.

I. Love. This. Book.

Mostly because of the chemistry between Taylor and Dez. It was so freaking hot. Dez is definitely my favorite Shiloh heroine so far. She is so badass and sexy. Plus, she's a woman of color! I love everything about her. She's just amazing. Taylor was awesome. Just everything about his character. I really like reading about people who have psychic gifts, it always makes me wish that I had them. Although I don't know if I would like to have Dez's gift. She can see dead people who have unfinished business, she does what they need her to and then they can move on. Her being able to help people, even dead ones, is noble, but the things she goes through is hard. So many of the people have died in violent ways and helping then really takes a toll on her.

Fantastic read! What a gripping and intense read.

Shiloh does it again. I first read Shiloh with THE MISSING which one might consider the first book in this line. I think THE DEPARTED is fine as a stand alone book. Yes, the characters are first brought to us in THE MISSING but with THE DEPARTED Shiloh sticks firm with the characters at hand. This was pretty good. Not as good as the first book, but still I really liked it. I was surprised that this was FBI agent Taylor's book. He was such a jerk in the first book. But I understand him better now and I can say that he grew on me.

I really liked this second installment of the special FBI team that investigates paranormally.

Loved Dez in The Missing (which is one of my favorite books) but really enjoyed this story too which I thought concentrated mostly on the hero and did not divulge enough of the heroines past - it was sort of glossed over. All in all though a very good read.

I started this book really late in the evening and could not put it down. It was really different from my normal read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had romance, suspense and spookiness all wrapped up in one. Now I need to obtain the first one & read it. If I keep on, I may give out details & I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I really liked Shiloh Walker's The Missing, the first book in this series about a psychic FBI team. This one, not so much. It felt like a typical romance with a couple paranormal mystery elements thrown at it. Walker's writing style is good but the worldbuilding is a little flat and the characters are even flatter.

Wow! This book was so emotional, and I enjoyed it much more than the first book, The Missing. Not only was the mystery more enjoyable, but the romance felt more real. The feelings between our hero and heroine were so intense they made me ache. Really looking forward to the next book in this series!

This book had an interesting story, but it never really picked up steam. It's not nearly as good as the first in the series. It is also not as spicy as many of Mrs. Walker's other books. It isn't a bad book, just not great. Hopefully the next in the series will be better.

Ive read several of Ms. Walkers books and I've loved them all. You can't help but love the characters. Even the secondary characters are very deep. I'm not sure if there are any more books waiting in the wings for this series, but I think I would really enjoy reading more about this psychic branch of the FBI.
