Avraham Azrieli's suspenseful action thriller is an engrossing read and compares favorably with the novels by John Le Carre, Tom Clancy, and Lee Child. The book focuses on the events in Israel just prior to and during the "Six Day War" when Israel destroyed Egypt's air force and defeated the overwhelming odds of several Arab countries. Azrieli offers us an exciting imagina...more

This is the second book of Avraham Azriel's I've read and have been impressed with his work both times. I actually read the follow-up to this book, The Jerusalem Assassin, first so it was interesting to read this one. The story is so well crafted that it's not necessary to read one before the other, and I think I actually preferred reading them in this order. I was already familiar with the characters, and it was interesting to read their back stories in this way.

Avriel's characters are the bes...more

In this expertly written novel, Azrieli spins a web of intrigue that begins in Nazi Germany and ends with a breathtaking undercover operation in war-torn Jerusalem. In the middle of it all is young Lemmy Gerster, a rabbi's son who was raised in a devoutly Orthodox sect but begins to question everything he's ever known after a chance encounter with a beautiful woman from his father's secret past. The underlying themes of romance, revenge and political scheming carefully contribute to Lemmy's pers...more

I wish this would be made into a movie. This is my favorite Azrieli book so far. Historical fiction is right up my alley. You can tell it is well researched. It sucked me in. The Jerusalem Inception is the total package; romance, family drama, politics, history, and internal conflicts. I couldn't put it down until I was done. Lemmy is such a multifaceted protagonist, You feel and relate to his struggle being pulled in so many different directions. The history involved makes for a tough topic. Qu...more

I have been reading Avraham Azrieli's historical fiction The Jerusalem Inception all day! I just read another of Azrieli's books this week and when I read several books by the same author I always worry that the stories might be a bit predictable, or follow a bit of a formula, but I did not need to worry! The Jerusalem Inception was a wonderful read and with vivid descriptions that had me holding my breath and sitting up at the edge of my seat closer to my computer monitor willing the story to g...more

I only read this for a break from all the non fiction I've been reading, and maybe I should have researched a bit more and picked a better work of historical fiction. Its supposed to be about the 6 day war and the ghost of the holocaust that plagues its survivors. great premise, bad writing. I didn't expect a very good book and it wasn't. If anybody has a better piece of fiction to help me make sense of the middle east please write to me. I am not necessarily looking for reportage.. but narrativ...more

This is a Reading Good Books review.

When you hear the word “inception” nowadays, the first thing that comes to mind is that mindmelt movie by Leonardo Di Caprio with the dreams and spinning hotel rooms. I admit that when I first got this book, without even reading the summary, I thought that this might be something like that movie. But it’s not.

Inception means “the creation of something”. That’s where the genius of this book start. The title has a double meaning (or it’s just me over-reading in...more

The Jerusalem Inception begins at the end of WWII, with a crazy love triangle where two men (Abraham and Elie) are both smitten with Tanya Galinski. When they both lose Tanya, the story jumps forward 2 decades to 1967, going into the 6 day war. When Tanya is turned down by, now Rabbi, Abraham, she then goes after Abraham's son, Lemmy. Now Lemmy must decide where his loyalties lie, with his father and faith, or with the obviously alluring Tanya. Meanwhile, Elie is plotting revenge and fates are s...more

Another solid offering from Avraham Azrieli. In a short time, I've become a big fan. Highly thematic; possibly even "planned" in a mini-series sort of way. I find this one to be the starting point to the other works I've read by the acclaimed author. The community painted in the novel is as maligned as they are pious, and the main character's struggles and aspirations weave like fine DNA. I love books where conflicts are taken head on, and The Jerusalem Inception does not disappoint. The Six Day...more

The Jerusalem Inception is a great book. Starting in WWII and flowing into the 6 Day War in the Middle East, it's a great piece of historical fiction and a fun spy novel.
Avraham Azrieli does a great job delivering the feelings of fear and angst pervasive in a young Israel.
You really see how the different personalities (Orthodox, moderates, defense hawks) conflicted with each other over some very serious issues. So this was a great history and cultural lesson for somebody like me that never real...more

I was completely taken in by this novel by Avraham Azrieli. Previously, I had finished two of the author's other novels, and while I found this novel closer in tone to The Masada Complex than the other novel I recently finished, Christmas For Joshua, The Jerusalem Inception is absolutely a standalone work.

The historical setting of the Six Day War provides for a vivid and potentially volatile background for the events of the novel. As a historical thriller, TJI utilizes both the momentum of the e...more

"The Jerusalem Inception" by Avraham Azrieli is a carefully-researched novel that begins near the end of World War II and continues through 1967, taking the reader on a historical journey of the Jewish people from the unimaginable horror of the Holocaust through the founding of modern-day Israel and the Arab-Israeli tensions that culminated in the Six Day War. But Azrieli goes far beyond the historical figures and facts, creating an engaging cast of characters that each experience his or her own...more

Azrieli is one of the most gifted writers of his generation at connecting the Jewish and Israeli experience to a wider audience. His work seamlessly blends historical narratives with engrossing modern fiction in a way that makes him far more relevant than some of his peers.

His effort "The Jerusalem Inception" is a multi-generational saga that connects the experiences of Holocaust survivors, an SS officer, and Nazi-era Germany with contemporary Israeli issues such as Zionism and national heritage...more

The Jerusalem Inception by Avraham Azrieli took me awhile to begin to understand all of the characters and the novel set up, but once I had an understanding of what was going on with the story it had me hooked. The story begins in World War II worn torn Europe and travels to Jerusalem. It is in essence a love story set in Israel during the Six Day War. I always learn a lot from Avraham Azrieli's books and this is no exception. The characters are well developed and this is just a good read from s...more

The book Jerusalem Inception is great novel that takes place just before the Six Day War in Israel where several Arab countries were defeated by Israel. The book combines a number of facts and historical references combined with flawless historical fiction that submerges the reader into a thoughtful, thrilling plot. Author Avraham Azrieli has done it once again by packing the novel with drama and intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat! Also, even though this book is a novel, the plot c...more

The first thing I want to point out is that the characters are all different.
Now, that may seem odd to say but as a lover of Robert Ludlum's work where each character was fleshed out and had their own style of speaking, acting, and behaving, Avraham does the same.
The good news is this is maintained throughout the story even during the action sequences.
Avraham also knows his stuff, so to speak.
I've read Michael B. Oren's book on the six day war, a historical account of what occurs, and Avraham ac...more

I won't give away any spoilers, but if I could compare this book to any movie, I would compare it to Titanic because of the way that it ties a fictional love triangle with real historical events. It is an edge of the seat thriller. I could not put the book down once I started. Mr. Azrieli has a new fan and I look forward to reading more of his work. His characters were complex and different. Nothing like love, betrayal, and spy games to make for a good read. Very comparable to works by James Pat...more

A thoroughly entertaining thriller, The Jerusalem Inception is centered around the events that lead up to and eventually erupt in The Six Day War. The novel follows a young man, Jerusalem Gerster, whose entire life is thrown upside down when he meets a beautiful older Mossad agent who introduces him to the real world. Jerusalem will eventually come to play a very important role for Israel in The Six Day War which is something that no one could have ever predicted. The Jerusalem Inception is an e...more

The Jerusalem Inception was an enjoyable read that sucked me in with its well-paced writing and intricate characters. It is a very descriptive book that intertwines the past and present seamlessly and kept me engaged and eager to find out how the entangled characters would sort themselves out and find out where their true loyalties lay since they all have so much at stake. The Jerusalem Inception is a piece of historic fiction not just simply set within slices of history (specifically the end of...more

Wow! I have learned about the 6-day war, but never in a historical fiction context--usually either in class, during a discussion, or on tour. Azrieli is able to contextualize historical events magically and he does so once again in The Jerusalem Inception. There's a 2-decade jump in one part of the story that just killed me! There are so many suspenseful moments that it's almost impossible to write a review because I don't want to give anything away. The main characters are all pretty attractive...more

Avraham Azrieli certainly knows how to craft an exciting read. His combination of history, politics, and the human spirit make for a suspenseful page turner that will captivate readers to the end. I didin't know a lot of the historical background involving the Six Day War and loved the way Azrieli was able to weave the events into a thoughtful political thriller. As I read the book, the characters just came to life and I carried them with me even when I wasn't reading. That's the sign of a good...more

Avraham Azrieli's action thriller is a must read!! I try to stop after a few chapters but just can't seem to make that happen. I love the way that he keeps the reader so totally engaged. This one gave great insight into the orthodox faith and the restrictions and level of blind faith that one must possess in order to be completely accepted into the community. It also includes a sweet love story that complicates, enhances and adds a high level of mixed emotions all at the same time. I love all th...more

This fascinating, intimate story follows three disparate yet driven characters in 1960s Israel, all motivated by their desire for revenge, justice and love, all united by their dedication to the budding state of Israel, each with their own vision of what it should become. This is no ordinary spy novel, this is a well-researched work of historical fiction that cannot be contained in any one genre. Kudos to the author for presenting a strong female protagonist, and for his obvious mastery of recen...more

A well researched novel that follows suit with the rest of Azrieli's novels. with a great premise, a love triangle during one of Israel's best fought wars, the 6 day war. The story weaves itself from the past into the present, highlighting adventure, conspiracy, greed, revenge and love. The book plays as both an allegory and an analogy with the rebirth of Jerusalem; Perhaps the most intriguing interlude is the web of manipulation and lies by Abraham's son, once you read the book, you'll get the...more

Azrieli's novels never disappoint. Captivating, face-paced, suspenseful, and well-written, the pages seem to turn themselves! The Jerusalem Inception is the start of the story of a two book series that tells of the story of two childhood friends who escape the Holocaust and make it their lives' missions' to avenge those who died. A book perfect for all readers, there is a love story, action, drama, fighting, lies, and suspense. I'm always happy to read Azrieli's work and can't wait for the next...more

I honestly couldn't put this book down from the second I opened it (well virtually, but still). I am very familiar with Avraham's books at this point and it seems like every book is better than the last. This book was particularly entertaining as others have said, he incorporates the perfect amount of history and action but also includes interesting characters that you get very invested in. This has to be one of my favorites of his books. All of his books make you think, this one was definitely...more

When I started reading "The Jerusalem Inception", I thought it was a typical cookie cutter suspense novel. I thought the plot would have all the predictable twists and turns that other novels in this genre have. I was soon proved wrong, and amazed at how many times the author surprised me. I kept telling myself just one more chapter and I'll put the book down, but I was truly captivated by the incredible story. Even though I knew it was fiction it felt real. I am looking forward to reading more...more

The Jerusalem Inception is a historical fiction about the Six Days War of Israel in 1966. The main character is Lemmy short for Jerusalem. He is the son of a Rabbi of an ultra conservative group of Jews living in Israel. The author does a wonderful job of intertwining the story of Lemmy's father, his friends Elise and Tanya who had all be victims of the Nazi regime during WWII with the Lemmy and the time leading up to the Six Days War. This is the 1st book of a trilogy. I could not put down this...more

This is an excellently written, suspenseful book, extremely informative about conditions in Israel and particularly Jewish scholarly life.

We are introduced to some of the main protagonists in the story in 1944 – Tanya, a young Jewish girl, Abraham and Elie, who “had the devil’s eyes” (and I did find him to be a particularly evil character).

Twenty-one years later Abraham has become a Rabbi, and has a son, Jerusalem, or Lemmy. Tanya finds Abraham again and the more modern-day story gets under way....more

Avraham Azrieli uses so much vivid detail and information in his novels; it always leaves you feeling more educated on the topic of the story and you feel gripped into each and every chapter. "The Jerusalem Inception," is a perfect balance of love, action, and history. You are going to want to pick this up when you have time to sit and read for a while because you wont want to put it down! I am looking forward to reading "The Jerusalem Assassin," next!

Avraham Azrieli, a graduate of Columbia Law School in New York City, practiced law for two decades before publishing his first novel, The Masada Complex, a best-selling political thriller. Like Ben Teller, the protagonist in The Mormon Candidate, Azrieli loves riding his motorcycle in the hilly woods of western Maryland.
