Isn’t it frightening to think that in the blink of an eye, your life can change so drastically? All it takes is for you to walk through door number two instead of door number one. The decisions you make in that moment can define the rest of your days.
I looked deep into his eyes. “It’s why I need to go,” I said. “I need to find out.” He looked away. My words had hurt him, and I hated that. His left arm, the band one, hung from his torso, limp, lifeless. He didn’t lik...more
This was an enjoyable story, but it did require a lot of suspending your disbelief. I enjoyed the 1943 WWII setting in Tahiti, and was mildly intrigued by the suspense built around a murder and other odd events. But this kind of romance is not for me, and despite the possibility of a long awaited HEA I am not sure I’d even classify this book as a romance. It’s much more of a women’s fiction with a love story.

Putting off her marriage, disappointing her mother and even hurting Gerard(the groom)can't stop the overwhelming desire to help in the war effort. I'll be reviewing this fully on Chronicles, but this novel set the bar high for my 2012 reading. I was definitely looking forward to it as The Violets of March was easily my favorite book of 2011, but The Bungalow was a joy beyond my expectations.
A warning: There's a surprise adoption theme in the book which isn't really discussed in any other reviews or snippets. It could be triggering for some. Look for more of that on Chronicles.

I've had this book's release date marked on my calendar for months. I loved Sarah's first novel, but I can only explain my feelings about reading this one as similar to a second date - excited, nervous, and wondering how it could possibly be better than the first.
The second date was incredible.
From the start, I was enchanted: "He was there, of course - in uniform, shyly smiling at me as the waves fell into the shore. I could hear them - their violent crash, followed by the fizz of a million bubb...more

A beautifully-written and heart-breaking story. The Bungalow appealed to me for two reasons: the WWII backdrop (my favorite time period to read) and the Bora-Bora island setting. How unique and exotic! I ended up falling for the story for much more than these reasons, though.
It is a bittersweet love story with a bit of a murder mystery involved. Having read many WWII stories, I really appreciated the beautiful setting and the different perspective on the war. Rather than seeing the war from the...more

Mom: Jenna! The house is on fire!
Me: Yeah, I thought I smelled something funny. I'll be with you in a sec I really need to see how this ends.
And I also have a feeling I'll be thinking about this book tomorrow. After I've moved on to a new book. yep that's totally healthy

I think that The Bungalow might be the most perfect beach read. Ever. The setting is the island paradise of Bora-Bora during World War II. Twenty-one year old Anne Calloway is a college nursing graduate, and has recently become engaged. Uncertainty over her impending nuptials convinces Anne to join the Army Nurse Corps, and she is sent to the Pacific with her best friend, Kitty. Anne develops a crush on a handsome and enigmatic soldier named Westry, and they soon begin having a love affair.

So glad that I decided to read this book. I was shocked out how quickly this became one of my new favorites of all time. Let me start out by saying that Sarah Jio is an amazing writter. I love the fact that she gets to the point of her story but in just a beautiful way. Within the first two sentences I knew I wouldn't be able to put this book down. The way she is able to give you such a vivid picture without dragging you along for 3 chapters is a breath of fresh air. She is definately an author...more
Sarah Jio is a talented writer. While I gave Violets of March an extremely negative review, I had so thoroughly enjoyed Blackberry Winter, and was on the fence about reading The Bungalow. I had read the reviews, both good and bad, and even the spoilers because I wasn't sure if I was prepared to spend money on a new novel after having been annoyed at spending $12.99 on Violets of March. I waited a bit, long enough for me to forget the spoilers and still felt compelled to read the Bungalow. I'm su...more
More like 2.5 stars--but I'm not in the rounding up kind of way with this one. I finished this book and read a majority of it on a plane ride from Denver to Detroit. That flight is only two hours long. So--you know--it was engaging for the duration of the flight. For that, I am thankful and I appreciate the book's ability to keep my attention without having to make me think too hard when I panic during turbulence (true)--but it was just a little too "too stupid to live" for me. I mean, the heroi...more

I fell in love with this book. A love story first and foremost, The Bungalow is also a tale of friendship, forgiveness and growth amidst a gorgeous beach backdrop in Bora Bora that is surrounded by a raging war. This novel captivated me from the first page and I polished it off in a few sittings – which unfortunately is rare for me these days. The romantic angle really should have seemed over the top, but it actually worked, which surprised me at times and is...more

This is my first time reading Sarah Jio. I really enjoyed the book and have purchased her first novel The Violets of March. This was a love story / mystery. Anne is engaged to be married to Gerard Godfrey and it is just a few weeks until their wedding. At their engagement party her best friend Kitty announces that she is joining the war efforts to become a nurse overseas. Anne decides that she can’t let her best friend do this on her own and she calls off the wedding and sets off to Bora Bora fo...more

This is a romance between Westry and Anne during World War II. It takes place in the South Pacific in Bora Bora. Jio does a great job in conveying the sense of being on the island through her vivid descriptions, making you wish you could visit sometime.

Sarah Jio is an amazing story teller! I fell in love with her writing style in Violets of March and she did not disappoint with The Bungalow.
As a reader, I just wanted to tell Anne what to do at many points in the story. Despite my objections, Anne did not listen to me as Sarah had her own thoughts in mind for Anne, Westry, and Kitty.
Everyone knows that I am a sucker for love stories. Well this love story has tangles, layers, and even suspense. I simply could not put it down.

I loved how Sarah Jio wove love, mystery, past and present in her last novel The Violets of March and she has accomplished this perfect combination yet again with her latest novel The Bungalow. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her latest novel and Plume was nice enough to provide Paperback Dolls with an ARC. Jio’s latest novel begins in the present as Anne’s daughter is trying to solve a mystery about a beautiful sculpture at her college and Anne receives a note...more

I read Sarah Jio's debut novel The Violets of March last year - and loved it. (my review) I had no doubt that I would enjoy her latest book, The Bungalow, as much. But I was wrong - I actually enjoyed it more!

I wasn't sure if this book would be any good when I picked it off the shelf at the library; but I soon changed my mind. I really liked this book and was sorry to see it come to an end. The characters really came alive and it was not the light romance I was expecting. Told from an old woman's perspective, Anne Calloway tells her granddaughter how she had changed her mind and postponed her wedding to Gerard, a good, solid man she has known her whole life, right after their engagement party. This novel's speaker is Anne Calloway, an older woman whom circumstances cause to look back on her youth when she was a nurse stationed on Bora-Bora during World War II. The major part of the story occurs in 1942 and 1943 on Bora-Bora. Anne is engaged, but unsure of her feelings toward her fiance and finds herself drawn to a soldier named Westry. The two develop a secret friendship and meet in a small hidden building, the bungalow of the title. But things are happening to Anne's best friend Kitt...more
This book was funny. The opening lines stole my breath away with their beauty. Then, somewhere in the middle, my interest started to wane a bit. There was something about the author's style that I just wasn't sure I liked. Some lines were beautiful, but some were...I don't know how to explain it.

This is a Book Club selection so I don't want to give away too much in my review, but we aren't reading it until the summer so I do need to write down a few thoughts to keep me from forgetting them.
I liked the overall premise of this story--an older woman recounting her experiences as a nurse in the South Pacific in World War Two--and I loved the island setting. I thought the plot had potential but didn't live up to it. I found the plot "twists" to be predictable, and while I enjoyed the myste...more
Five Big Stars! This is a poignant love story set during World War II.

She recently graduated from nursing school and is newly engaged to the wealthy and handsome Gerard, someone she has known her entire life. Parental expectations gently prodded her into the engagement. The comfortable childhood friendship between Anne and Gerard has evolved into a warm, loving relationship but Anne finds...more

Sarah Jio does it again! What a beautifully crafted novel. You can almost smell the hibiscus flowers through the pages. The characters are well developed, and the plot moves along effortlessly. Sarah's novels are just a joy to read. I start reading them andby the time I realize I am thirsty or hungry, I am a hundred pages into the story. The entire world completely disappears while I read one of Sarah's novels. Don't miss out on this wonderful reading adventure!
