Dark Matter Heart was a pretty good book. I found it a little slow at the beginning but ¼ ways through it, it really picked up! I loved the connection between Cor and his new “best friend” Taylor. The friendship between them was great and so easy going. I always find it interesting to see how different authors use the vampire myths; killing them, sun, how to turn and Nathan Wrann didn’t disappoint with his interpretation. Good book for sure, and a must read. The start was a little slow but I think after reading it was because there needed to be a story told and I loved the story, I really liked how it was a different vampire story and I am very very excited to get to the next book. The ending was a great one!!;)

To be honest, I was not in love with this book when I started it. I thought it had some Twilight type undertones to it. I also thought that it moved along way too quickly and I wasn't sure how there was going to be any good closure to the story. This just goes to show that you can't judge a book until you are done with it. By the time I was through with this book I was loving every minute of it. Dark Matter Heart is the first book in the Cor Griffin Bloodsuckers Series. Our hero is Cordell “Cor” Griffin, a seemingly ordinary high school student. Together with his mother, Jane, he moves up to the Pacific Northwest from Los Angeles, California to start anew. New neighborhood, new school, new friends.

He meets Taylor on his first day of school. He also meets a pretty girl named Caitlyn. Unfortunately, being the new kid in school, he becomes the target of the bullies. Things do not become easier for Cor when strange things begin to happen. Certain people that Cor comes in contact with die. And they all have the same cause of death… all were drained of their blood. Suspicions arise when it seemed coincidental that the murders start on the day Cor moved into town.

I do not have a good track record when it comes to Young Adult stories. Especially the Paranormal subgenre. Often, I am left unaffected or give up before I even finish it. But I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was a quick read; the story was fast-paced and direct. I like that it was very readable, the short chapters seem to add to the pace of the story. There are a couple of typos here and there but no big deal. I liked how the characters were written, Taylor mostly. I also liked Cor but it was easy for me to picture Taylor in my head.

The premise of the story is interesting. It is certainly different than most of the vampire fiction novels flooding the book shelves these days. I liked the ending a lot. It had a twist that I did not expect at all. I am interested on what will come next.

Given that is a new YA paranormal/vampire series, I understand that the author wants to establish his own canon of vampire history, e.g. Stephenie Meyer and her sparkling “vampires”. And I respect that. I might not agree with all of it but at least the author is trying to set his series apart from the others. Although, I still found myself shaking my head at some parts.

There were bits of the story that were left open-ended. I figured since this is the first book in a series that those details will continue on to the next book. I hope so. Good continuity is always a plus for me. Overall, it is a good establishing piece for a series.

Rating: 3.5/5.

Recommendation: Fans of YA vampire fiction would find that this is right up their alley. If you want to take a break from Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, give this a try.(less)

By my rating, you can see that I didn't really care for this book....and here is why:

The book is primarily narrated from the point of view of the MC, and at times the author will randomly start narrating from the POV of someone else, in the middle of the page, without warning.

All the action scenes, feature...Stabbing! And Punching! And action words with exclamation points after each one!!!

On the first day of school Cor makes a friend, who of course is one of those people who know everything, how to hack into police computers and how to hack into phones, with unlimited access to lab facilities, and x-ray machines, and can do blood testing...just like every other 16 year old boy we know?

The characters personalities don't seem to stay true to themselves, at first Cor is written as this more introspective loner, who tries to stay away from everyone, and stay invisible. But the second day he's telling all his secrets to his new friend.

I didn't see the story line of the antagonist coming, there aren't really that many hints given at why he's being stalked. So that was good, the reader got a moment of the big reveal.

I felt if Cor had been given a little more depth, it would have made the book better. His character came off as cocky, I wished he would have had more feeling about some of the things going on in his life, growing up without a Dad, a more stark sense of isolation, anger at the situation, or a sense of morality and justice? Something? I think would have given this book more of a reason to be involved with the characters.

Along with some editing - no switching narratives in the middle of scenes without telling the reader! (less)

Nathan Wrann writes a pretty decent story with Dark Matter Heart. I really enjoyed the book, and couldn't put it down. While it was a little slow moving towards the begining, the action picks up furiously towards the end of the story, and then, in true Amazon Kindle published author fashion, ends with a link to purchase the second book in the series, instead of wrapping up some of the loose ends left in the climax.

This book latches on to you and doesn’t let go. I loved every minute of it.

Though he is sickly, Cor just wants to blend in and finish high school and with juice box in hand at a new school that’s just what he plans to do. But of course trouble finds him on his first day. While his new friend Taylor guides him through his classes he happens upon the jocks. Who by all means are terrible and violent. But when Cor refuses to fight back something seems odd. Many others have said that the book was slow in the beginning. I didn't consider it to be slow, but when the vampire plot came out all of a sudden I was a little taken aback. To be honest I had kind of forgotten that the book was supposed to be about vampires simply because it hadn't been mentioned for a good portion of the book. Firstly, I would like to say I really liked the cover. It gave me high hopes for the work.

This book was good, but not what I had hoped for. I’ve read some amazing reviews on this work but I can’t write one myself. The writing style simply wasn’t for me and really distracted me from the story. This isn’t a particularly long book at yet its taken me four days to read it. The book is a mixture of sorts , it's got action , humour , mystery , romance all put into one . There are too many unaswered questions and with the way things concluded in this book , there are too many events just waiting to unfold . I cannot wait to read the second book in this series and see what is next in store for Cor , his family and friends .

The writing is detailed but the plot is set at a fast pace, and paired with short chapters this book really seems to pick up speed as you read. One issue I had with this were the more “unrealistic” events like the fact that there is a significant amount of hacking going on, don’t get me wrong it happens and there are some super nifty teens out there…it just felt a little weird to read. To be fair it was written in a believable way and the reasoning was also understandable, just something about it threw me off.I love the way vampirism is portrayed in this though. It connects to the lore quite well and it also doesn’t make it out to be some wonderful existence that bares no consequences. It seems rather uncomfortable at times and even savage at some points. Which is the way I like my vampires, I don’t want them to have a super wonderful time and have fangirls around every corner. That’s just boring. Another wonderful thing about this is the action, it’s not abundant but when it does occur…wow. Wrann really knows how to write a fight scene, especially toward the end.

Cor is a great main character, even if he is a bit odd personality wise. He’s a quiet guy who is rather sickly, but he’s also quite capable of taking care of himself when he needs too. I have to give it to the guy, he’s pretty brave when it comes down to it. Taylor is also a pretty cool character and quite handy with tech, I like he’s kind of overactive personality and how he’s a bit obsessive over news. It’s weird but it’s quirky. Caitlyn is where my second issue lies, though it doesn’t have to do with her personality. She’s an enjoyable side character but I don’t quite get the whole “attraction” thing that occurs, it feels rather convenient I suppose. Trace and the other football players are quite the inclusion and boy did I hate them, I don’t think I’ve ever see high school kids that mean but they were quite believable as bullies.

Overall I found this quite good and I’m glad I got the chance to read it. I’m hoping to get around to the second one sometime soon because this one left me with a few questions that I would answered.(less)

On his first day of school he meets Taylor. He's the nerdy, future scientist type who instantly takes a liking to Cor. There's a companionship that they share, forging them together as the outcasts at school. This is fine with Cor, invisible is great in his book, but when Caitlyn catches his eye he can't help but feel the pull he feels towards her. Well, Caitlyn's jock boyfriend notices too and makes sure he makes his point.
With threats, and a beating that should leave him like a vegetable, Cor can't seem to shake how drawn to her he is. But with evil lurking and striking the ones he's come into contact with, Cor must keep those close to him safe and bring the evil in his life to an end.

Cor was a great character, developed, interesting and completely down to earth. I enjoyed how vampireism is explained in this book. It's not about a huge race of vampires trying to take over, hell, Cor doesn't even truly know he's a vampire. He's unlike any vampire character that I've ever come across and it was refreshing. Throughout the book you learn more about Cor, his mom and what secrets there are in his life. As he seems to be discovering new and potentially scary things about who he really is, murders and accusations are popping up at every turn.
Dark Matter Heart was great, I will definitely pick up the next book in the series just to see what is uncovered next. One thing is, I do wish the book was just a little bit longer. But Mr. Wrann left if wide open for more books to come in the series and I can't wait.(less)

1. Pulling off another vampire story
2. Characters that are lively and I must say I found Taylor a fresh of breath air even when he couldn't believe that his new friend Cor was a Vampire that could get beat up and still get up like nothing happened to him.

This was "okay" but I was a bit disappointed in it because I was ready for an in your face vampire story and shucks for the biggest first half of this story it never even mentioned a word about vampires just a boy moving to a new town with sun allergies. I have yet to read another book that has done this. So one star for that. I also liked that it explained the mirror/photo/silver thing. Clever.

I was pulled in immediatly with this story. You have to know what happened to Cor. You need to understand what he is even though you know what he is. When I started on this book, I thought okay just another vampire story... since I love those I kept reading and boy was I glad I did. The characters are so rich and real that you find yourself wondering why it is that Cor doesn't understand what he is. The story was captivating and kept me flipping the pages. If you have ever not fit in at high school, you will immediately identify with Cor and Taylor... they are an awesome pair and Caitlyn rounds it out nicely.

I found it a little slow at the beginning, almost cryptic, I was about to tquit, but half ways through, the action increased in a way that can´t help but want to know how it will end.

The vampire universe is explained in a different way, almost "investigated" by "genius" teenagers and, Cor is not your typical bloodsucker heroic and indestructible. That is a plus.

I really loved how to the point Dark Matter Heart was. There wasn't any useless time fillers. I also loved how there was just enough romance to make it have a cute side. Cor is a great main character, i loved that he wasn't cocky in the slightest bit and was overall a really nice guy. I cannot wait to find out what will happen next in this series and how Cor and his friends will clear their names of murder!

This story was amazing. It is the first YA I have read from the male's point of view. While in some ways it may have seemed slow at the start, I enjoyed those pages because they kept you teetering on the edge of an invisible fence (is he or isn't he a vampire or a very sick kid). The plot itself was great and unique. The characters were well developed and the ending left me wanting more.

Quick and easy read! I thought it was pretty good. I liked Cor and Taylor a lot they were a good team. Didn't know too much about Caitlyn though. His mom kind of passed me off a bit though telling him he was crazy like wtf he is your son. Also the bullies were taken to like a new extreme it was king of intense. But over all pretty good!
