Well, it’s official. Charley Davidson is one of my most favorite book characters of all time. Oh my gosh I love this girl. Well, it’s official. Charley Davidson is one of my most favorite book characters of all time. Oh my gosh I love this girl. Yes, I’m having a silly fan-girl moment where I end up saying things like, ‘I’m going to be Charley Davidson for Halloween!” She’s not just funny, she is absolutely hilarious and I cannot get enough. If you've read the first novel (which you definitely should before reading this one or you'll be super duper confused) then you'll remember laughing practically every single page. I'll admit, this one wasn't AS funny, but I still wasn't disappointed... I had to make sure to keep from drinking liquids when my eyes were on the pages for fear it would come out my nose. :)

I started this book the day that it came out and due to my current crazy schedule it was hard for me to find time to read… I still managed to read it in 2 days though. A bit sleep-deprived? Yes. A bit backed up on work from too many breaks? Yes. Was it worth? Oh heck yes!

‘Second Grave on the Left’ picks up right where ‘First Grave on the Right’ left off with a brand new mystery (or three) to boot. Darynda Jones? You’re an amazing writer and I kinda love you. You’ve now written two amazing novels that, well… I can’t get over how much I love these books. I totally dig a good grim reaper novel, I’m always up for a good laugh, throw in a mystery to keep me guessing (please do!), and then there’s the way you describe Reyes. To quote Charley: “Holy mother of banana cream pie.”

”He was like the desert, stark and beautiful, harsh and unforgiving, with the promise of treasure behind every dune, the allure of water hidden just beneath the surface.”

And if you need a visual? Whoever posted that picture on Goodreads of ‘Reyes Farrow’ totally hit the nail on the head. Lol

I’m not going to go into details about the plot or anything because I don’t want to give anything away to the non-readers of book 1 and because all I want to get across with this review is to say that you really need to read this series. If you’re looking for a serious mystery, this probably isn’t the novel for you. It’s one of those books that I’m sure if you spent a lot of time critiquing the story you’d find some holes but it’s such an enjoyable read that I don’t personally see a damn thing wrong with it. Not so much a cliffhanger ending but I most certainly cannot wait for January to roll around. And that cover? Awesome.

Reyes is even more mysterious now than he was in the first book when we knew nothing about him other than how incredibly handsome he is. (view spoiler) I can’t say I was entirely comfortable with some of his choices in this book, but that didn’t stop me from being just as pathetic as those women who were writing him fan mail and paying a fortune for photos of him in the shower. He is Reyes Alexander Farrow after all, and if you’re furrowing your eyebrows in confusion, that only means you haven’t read these books.

Darynda Jones still relies on humor to make her book unputdownable. Maybe some of you will think that’s a bad thing, but her fans, including me, wouldn’t want it any other way. Admittedly, there were times when I felt that she overdid it, especially around chapters 4 and 5, but she soon got right back on track.

I hefted myself upright and wrestled off my socks, wiggling the bed just enough to elicit soft gasps of agony from Garret.
“You’re such a whiner,” I said, lying back beside him and lifting my feet. “Okay, starting with my left pinky toe, we have Dopey, Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy, Queen Elizabet the Third, Bootylicious the Patron Saint of Hot Asses, and Pinky Floyd.”
After a thoughtful moment, he asked, “Pinky Floyd?”
“You know, like the band, only not”
“Right. Did you name your fingers?”
I turned an incredulous look on him. I was a master of incredulity. “That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.”

All in all, this book was exactly what I expected it to be – light, funny, with lovable characters and the ultimate bad boy. It had family drama, secret agents, a silly best friend, nightly adventures in bunny slippers, missing persons, shootouts, and an ending that made me want to read more.

First Grave on the Right was the book I picked up and reread every time I felt sad, tired, or just in the mood for a few good laughs. Second Grave on the Left will serve the same purpose, at least until February 2, 2012. when I’ll trade it for a younger model.

Bahahahahaha. I'm still laughing. I think I liked this second book even better than the first. Darynda definitely didn't slack off with book #2. She gave us another great, fabulous, funny as heck novel.

What a ride!!! Charley is back to her old tricks and witty sarcasm. I found the plot in this one much more interesting and equaling a wild roller coaster ride. What a ride!!! Charley is back to her old tricks and witty sarcasm. I found the plot in this one much more interesting and equaling a wild roller coaster ride. She is working on a new case, trying to solve the mystery behind Mimi's disappearance; Someone is hiding a big secret from way back in high school. In the meantime, Charley is also trying to find the sexy and stubborn son of Satan. There was much more suspense and action in this book. The humour did not falter, though. There was plenty of it and it was still the best part of it all.

"Two men from the FBI are here,” Cookie said.
Crap. “Men in black are at the office?”
“Well, yes, but they’re actually in more of a navy.”  Crapola. I so didn’t have time for men. In any color. “Okay, two questions.
Do they look mad, and are they hot?”
After a long, long pause, Cookie said, “One, not really. Two, no comment at this time. And three, you’re on speakerphone.”
After another long, long pause, I said, “Okie dokie then. Be there in a jiff.”

The mystery behind Charley and her "powers" are becoming very interesting. There is more to this Grim reaper business than she thought. Mistress Marigold is also intriguing - what's up with her? But I'm most curious about Owen and what Charley did to piss him off. Third Grave Dead Ahead is bound to be awesome!

Although the character development is modest, it's there nonetheless. All the characters are really enjoyable. They fit very well into Charley's eccentric life and all have distinct roles to play in the story. I particularly enjoy Garrett (and Cookie of course), he's like the amusing little brother who's fun to pick on.

Not everything is tied up in this one. There is still much mystery left to uncover and I can't wait until February to read more. Darynda has become one of my favourite authors and I will thus be reading anything and everything she is willing to dish out. If you want pure fantastic entertainment, these books are for you!!

I always love to find new entertaining and captivating UF series as it helps me to remember why I love it so much. Really there's two things that I enjoy about this series and that's Charley's snark and Reyes....everything else is just bonus.

Don't get me wrong...the mysteries are interesting and there is a lot going on but sometimes it seems as if there is too much happening. On top of that, we get little clues dropped here and there and I was finding myself going back and forth to make sure I was getting things right. Charley Davidson is back in Second Grave on the Left, Darynda Jones’ second installment in her quirky and wonderful series. I enjoyed the first book immensely. I found Charley to be a really fun read and I found the story to be very well told. And you know what? Book two was even better.

As with the last book, we follow Charley as she investigates a case (she is a PI after all). This time around, she is trying to find Mimi, a friend of Charley’s best friend who had left them cryptic messages and then went missing. But that is not all we get. No no no. We also get to see how she deals with the departed who wish to pass through her (she is the grim reaper after all) and we also get a story line involving Reyes. That is a lot to handle in one book, but Darynda writes the multiple storylines really well. They just flow from one to another without feeling forced. I like how easily it reads.

Now, speaking of Reyes, great news! The mystery that is Reyes?…well, he’s still a mystery. But we do get a few answers – just enough to keep us from banging our heads against the wall yet not enough to fulfil our curiosity. And Man oh Man there is something so incredibly YUM-MY about that man! Now for you romance lovers, note that there is no sex in this book…but the chemistry between these two main characters is so intense, you will be left feeling fully satisfied. (See what I did there? I inserted a sexual innuendo. Tee hee…inserted. *g*)

All the characters are endearing in this series. From the spirits to Charley’s best friend Cookie to her uncle Ubie. And Garrett I really like. I can’t tell you exactly why – maybe it’s because I think he’s into Charley but I’m not sure but even if he was he really doesn’t stand a chance because of her feelings for Reyes yet he still deals with it with humor and dignity, mostly. Maybe that’s why. But he is a great character and he is in this installment a fair bit.

But my favorite character by far is Charley herself. She is so snarky and witty and Funny with a capital F. And clever! I giggled out loud while reading this – more so this time around. How she interacts with others, her dialogue and her internal discussions are all wonderful. I dare you to read her and not giggle.

And a quick note: Each chapter begins with either a saying found on a t-shirt or a bumper sticker. These are great! Examples include “If it has tires or testicles, it’s gonna give you trouble” and ‘What happens if you get scared half to death, twice?” and “Don’t go buying trouble. It’s free and it knows where you live.” Okay, one more: “Yeah, but what if like hands me pickles?” LOL

The ending, while not a cliffhanger, will break your heart a little. And after it does that, it will make you go “huh?” But before it breaks your heart a little and then makes you go “huh?” , Charley will do something that will make you say “What the??? Did she really just?.. But that means… Whoa…” After I finished the Second Grave on the Left, I kept thinking about that ending and wondering what it all means for our dear Charley. But one thing is for certain, she is in for quite a ride in the next book. I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on Third Grave Dead Ahead, which is due out January 31 2012.

Second Grave on the Left is quick and sweet and funny. A definite must read.(less)

De~lish! Titillating! I've seeped deeper and deeper into addiction, Second Grave on The Left has ruined me. Lets start at the beginning. Ms. Jones finally found that correct mixture of saucyness and snark that comes across more endearing than annoying. Charley was still quick witted but she came across more as a real person. I have to admit though, I still don't feel a connection with any of the characters.

I know what Jones is trying to do with Reyes, sexy bad boy who tries to make Charley think he's eviler than he really is to push her away but is really all mushy on the inside. But it just doesn't work. Their interactions felt flat and went nowhere. Each time he visited her went exactly the same and I felt like there were no new developments in their relationship. Meanwhile Griffin saves the day (and her life) but she never even considers him as a love interest. My problem is that she thinks she loves Reyes (when really she is only obsessed with him) and therefore is totally blind to all else. The story would feel a lot more complex if there was actual conflict with her feelings for Reyes and maybe Griffin mucking it up. But no. Reyes is the most beautiful perfect spectacular being to ever have existed. The End.

So on to the "selfish and short-sighted bitch" part of my review. He told you. He fucking told you. But no, you know best... and besides, your personal feelings are more important than the safety of Heaven and Earth. And really? She had no fucking right to do what she did. What a bitch. Charley Davidson is a Private Investigator who is also a consultant to Alburquerque Police Department. She has a special gift--talking to dead people--that she utilizes to solve crimes. This series is turning into one of my favorites. I love Charlie's wit and sharp tongue. Darynda Jones peppers the story with sayings and one liners that had me laughing out loud. I was a bit disappointed to see that there was not much progression in the Reyes front and did not appreciate his nasty side. Me gustó mucho más que el primero, me pareció más ameno y divertido, a diferencia de su antecesor no se me hizo pesado en ningún momento, al contrario, voy a extrañarlo ^^U

Cada vez me gusta más Charley y su naturalidad pasmosa, y cada vez me gusta más Reyes.

This one didn't grab me as much as the first book. It was still funny and I love how cool Charley is in all her crazy situations. I liked that I got to know Cookie a little better. I missed Reyes and felt that Charley was detached from him, maybe even cold. It just struck me as being off. There was also so much going on and so many names being thrown around. It was too much for me. All the action, the lack of many strong character interaction left me feeling a little disappointed.

I just love this second book ! It was even better than the first one. So much great events happen. We can learn more about Cookie who will be present all along the book, I think it's a really lovely character. The inverstigations of Charley were very interesting and finally the culprit was a surprise for me.
And of course we can only love Reyes, and I've to say Charley et Reyes are very very stubborn ! I can't wait to read the third book !

Charley is asked by her best friend Cookie to investigate the disappearance of her friend, Mimi. With her both her empathic skills and her ability to talk to ghosts, investigating is a piece of cake. Well, except when people are trying to kill you - that does slow things down.

I got this feeling when I was reading First Grave on the Right but in Second Grave on the Leftit really seemed to show, Charlie Davidson is Stephanie Plum

with a kick of paranormal. You can also compare Reyes to Ranger and Garret to Joe Morelli from the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich. I really enjoy learning all the ins and outs of being a Grim Reaper. It is a refreshing change from vampires and shapeshifters. I look forword to reading the next installment.

5 Stars, Full Force!

Let me just say, that I have never ever laughed soo much from one book!
Heroine is so hilarious! I can't believe I just now reading this series!

It's the second book in the series and I totally can't wait to read more.
First book was also good, but like always when you're reading a new series, there's a lot of info that you have to go through. So it's not always as pleasing as it could be.

But Darynda Jones you got this one very well!

Again another great fun romp with Charley.
I'm normally not a fan of PI or investigative novels but with Charley's witty quips and the supernatural element I'm a total fan.
Again my only fault with this is that I still don't feel the chemistry between Charley & Reyes maybe because they've never had a full conversation without him literally pining her to a wall by her throat!!!
I know he may have saved her a bunch of times but still not really feeling the love here..more like obsession and lu...more

Charley is trying to figure out who is trying to kill Cookie's friend while trying to find Reyes before he lets his physical body die. She thinks that by not giving in to him she'll be able to use that as blackmail but he doesn't seem to have a problem saying no. Then when she does something that will hopefully keep him alive and send him back to prison, will he forgive her?

A more solid 3.5 than the first book. As I hoped it was easier to read, though still with a tendency to seem as though it was open mic night at the local pub's comedy tryouts. Hopefully it'll smooth out further as the series progesses, as I do enjoy the story.
