Well, it’s official. Charley Davidson is one of my most favorite book characters of all time. Oh my gosh I love this girl. Yes, I’m having a silly fan-girl moment where I end up saying things like, ‘I’m going to be Charley Davidson for Halloween!” She’s not just funny, she is absolutely hilarious and I cannot get enough. If you've read the first novel (which you definitely should before reading this one or you'll be super duper confused) then you'll remember laughing practically every s...more

Don’t worry, Darynda Jones succeeded. Twice.

The second time around our favorite grim reaper gets into all kinds of trouble. She has three cases to solve and a messy love life to deal with. The man of our her dreams is in danger and Charley will move heaven and earth to help him. Who wouldn’t?

Reyes is even more mysterious now than he was in the first book when we knew nothing about him other than how incredibly handsome he is....more

Bahahahahaha. I'm still laughing. I think I liked this second book even better than the first. Darynda definitely didn't slack off with book #2. She gave us another great, fabulous, funny as heck novel.

What a ride!!! Charley is back to her old tricks and witty sarcasm. I found the plot in this one much more interesting and equaling a wild roller coaster ride. She is working on a new case, trying to solve the mystery behind Mimi's disappearance; Someone is hiding a big secret from way back in hi...more

Series like this one are the main reason for why I became completely obsessed with this genre in the first place. I always love to find new entertaining and captivating UF series as it helps me to remember why I love it so much. I am always the first to agree it is not an easy genre to read mainly because if it's wrongly written it can be one of the worst reads you'll ever have. But when you find an author that makes the genre proud, you feel like all those other failures you went through to get...more

I love Charley.

I love Reyes.

I love the twisty mystery.

I love the incorporeal sexytimes.

I hate waiting for the next book.

That is all.

Really there's two things that I enjoy about this series and that's Charley's snark and Reyes....everything else is just bonus.

Don't get me wrong...the mysteries are interesting and there is a lot going on but sometimes it seems as if there is too much happening. On top of that, we get little clues dropped here and there and I was finding myself going back and forth to make sure I was getting things right. It's a bit frustrating because that is exactly how we are getting to know most of the cha...more

I scooted through the basement window on my stomach and dropped into a somersault, landing on my feet on the cement slab of the basement. ‘Cause that’s how I roll.

The times I’d tried that same maneuver only to land on my ass with dirt and cobwebs coating my hair didn’t count.

This story had me cracking up many times. Darynda Jones really knows how to write humor. From her funny bumper-sticker and T-shirt chapter headings to Charley's always sarcastic take on life, this is very entertaining:

I stopped fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now.--T-shirt

Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?--Bumper sticker

I sort of got off on making bad guys sweat. Which was not unlike my love of making good guys sweat, just by very different means.--Ch

Charley Davidson is back in Second Grave on the Left, Darynda Jones’ second installment in her quirky and wonderful series. I enjoyed the first book immensely. I found Charley to be a really fun read and I found the story to be very well told. And you know what? Book two was even better.

As with the last book, we follow Charley as she investigates a case (she is a PI after all). This time around, she is trying to find Mimi, a friend of Charley’s b...more

If I have learned anything from Charley during the 600+ pages we've shared together, it's from her lessons in statement writing. So, in honor of Charley's mad writing skills, my review goes something like this ...

I read the book. It was brilliant. Reyes was hot. It was funny too.

The end.

... Pretty good, right?

Since the reason for such a simplistic (but also highly efficient) review won't make much sense to those of you who haven't read the story, I'm goi...more

That’s what I call a great urban fantasy book! The second book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones continues from where the first one ended and gives us another amazing story. Funny and with non-stop action this read is definitely one of the most enjoyable I’ve ever had.

Charley has lot on her plate in this book. A friend of Cookie (her friend and assistant) is missing, her father is obviously keeping a secret and her lover, the son of Satan, is hiding somewhere his body and doesn’t...more

De~lish! Titillating! I've seeped deeper and deeper into addiction, Second Grave on The Left has ruined me. Jones is a wicked, wicked girl, teasing us with what has to be the most unbelievably hot male off the presses. I can completely understand why Charley wants Reyes in the form he wears now! I've just given a bit away, but I don't care, I'm in deep lust. If you haven't begun this adventure you are missing out one of the best reads of the year. Every time Darynda brings Reyes onto the scene i...more

Charley Davidson is up to her usual antics in Second Grave, and is dare I say even funnier in this installment than the last. I can pretty much guarantee witty, LMFAO humor on every page (at least, that's what it was like for me). She'll keep you up laughing for hours, and you won't be able to sleep!

The plot in Second Grave was more interesting for me as well, the mystery more realistic and intense and the structure more coherent. I'...more

Another great book about my favorite grim reaper/PI.

Charley's friend Cookie comes to her when an old friend goes missing and together they try to figure out why everyone who was at a certain party back in high school is suddenly ending up dead. While Charley is trying to solve one case she is also trying desperately to find the dying corporeal body of Reyes. Will she be too late to save him and if she does find him what are the consequences of her actions.

A great story and it still has all the...more

-Second Grave on the left- I was a bit taken back with the two case's she was working on. The fact that she could even stop looking for one for a second to spend looking for the other totally miffed me. I still love the Charley and the author's snarky T-shirt humor. My kind of girl, She get's me she really does. I found myself laughing at her as much as I was horrified by her ordeal. It was a darker book for me, than the last one. I enjoyed the ride and can't wait to find out if she is forgiven...more

2.5 stars Oh Charley, Charley, Charley. Just when I think I might be starting to like you, you show me what a truly selfish and short-sighted bitch you really are.

Lets start at the beginning. Ms. Jones finally found that correct mixture of saucyness and snark that comes across more endearing than annoying. Charley was still quick witted but she came across more as a real person. I have to admit though, I still don't feel a connection with any of the characters.

I know what Jones is trying to do w...more

Charley Davidson is a Private Investigator who is also a consultant to Alburquerque Police Department. She has a special gift--talking to dead people--that she utilizes to solve crimes. That is only the icing on the cake. Most importantly, she is the grim reaper--portal to heaven and dating the Son of Satan--who is so alluring, badass, invincible, and the portal from hell. So, don't be messing with her, or she will turn your ass upside down and her boyfriend will cut your spine in half. :) I jus...more

This series is turning into one of my favorites. I love Charlie's wit and sharp tongue. Darynda Jones peppers the story with sayings and one liners that had me laughing out loud. I was a bit disappointed to see that there was not much progression in the Reyes front and did not appreciate his nasty side. (view spoiler)[Especially him calling her a whore. (hide spoiler)] I understand that there is a purpose to his behavior but its starting to borderline uncomfortable for me. We keep getting mixed...more

This one didn't grab me as much as the first book. It was still funny and I love how cool Charley is in all her crazy situations. I liked that I got to know Cookie a little better. I missed Reyes and felt that Charley was detached from him, maybe even cold. It just struck me as being off. There was also so much going on and so many names being thrown around. It was too much for me. All the action, the lack of many strong character interaction left me feeling a little disappointed.

I just love this second book ! It was even better than the first one. So much great events happen. We can learn more about Cookie who will be present all along the book, I think it's a really lovely character. The inverstigations of Charley were very interesting and finally the culprit was a surprise for me.
And of course we can only love Reyes, and I've to say Charley et Reyes are very very stubborn ! I can't wait to read the third book !

Here comes the throw, and she connects! Its going, going, its a Homerun!"

Haha, please excuse my lame anecdote, but I was trying to portray how good this book was to me. Darynda J is the batter, the pitcher is...well me, the reader, and her hit is the book. Now that I got that all straightened out, yeah right, on to the reviewing.

Charley is asked by her best friend Cookie to investigate the disappearance of her friend, Mimi. With her both her empathic skills and her ability to talk to ghosts, investigating is a piece of cake. Well, except when people are trying to kill you - that does slow things down.

This was a very fun book with tons of humor and lots of great action. I think Charley Davidson is one of my favorite heroines. She is funny without being annoyingly snarky. She is really determined in her investigating and...more

I got this feeling when I was reading First Grave on the Right but in Second Grave on the Leftit really seemed to show, Charlie Davidson is Stephanie Plum One For The Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) with a kick of paranormal. You can also compare Reyes to Ranger and Garret to Joe Morelli from the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich. I really enjoy learning all the ins and outs of being a Grim Reaper. It is a refreshing change from vampires and shapeshifters. I look forword to reading the next installment.

Let me just say, that I have never ever laughed soo much from one book!
Heroine is so hilarious! I can't believe I just now reading this series!

It's the second book in the series and I totally can't wait to read more.
First book was also good, but like always when you're reading a new series, there's a lot of info that you have to go through. So it's not always as pleasing as it could be.

But Darynda Jones you got this one very well!

Again another great fun romp with Charley.
I'm normally not a fan of PI or investigative novels but with Charley's witty quips and the supernatural element I'm a total fan.
Again my only fault with this is that I still don't feel the chemistry between Charley & Reyes maybe because they've never had a full conversation without him literally pining her to a wall by her throat!!!

Charley is trying to figure out who is trying to kill Cookie's friend while trying to find Reyes before he lets his physical body die. She thinks that by not giving in to him she'll be able to use that as blackmail but he doesn't seem to have a problem saying no. Then when she does something that will hopefully keep him alive and send him back to prison, will he forgive her?

I wish there was more Reyes in this book and I kept thinking, "Charley what if this is the last time you see him? Take adv...more

A more solid 3.5 than the first book. As I hoped it was easier to read, though still with a tendency to seem as though it was open mic night at the local pub's comedy tryouts. Hopefully it'll smooth out further as the series progesses, as I do enjoy the story.

I'm pretty sure that the reason my US friends think it hilarious and I don't lie within the cultural differences in humour; rooted in the tradition of tall tales and bragging contests unique to the USA and the more general use of superlativ...more
