Ahhh… What a story! I have so many feelings about this novel that I do not know where to begin. Let me start by saying…no matter what criticisms I have, I absolutely adored the book. Her attraction for him continues to grow, which, unfortunately, complicates the new friendships she has formed with his sister and girlfriend. It also complicates her relationship with a particular vampire whom she had once cared for deeply and is also drawn to irresistibly. Balancing her love life is even tougher when other vampires from her past come looking for her – and they don’t care about who they hurt to get to her. Can she protect all those in her unusual circle of friends and family?
Blood’s Voice by Aine Massie is a fresh take on vampires seen through the eyes of a powerful vampire. Having a natural aversion to harming humans doesn’t make the character Anya unique. Neither does her physical strength, or her fear of accidently hurting humans. It’s her unique gift that makes her special; her voice that can control, and be used as a lethal weapon, against her own kind.
Though I enjoyed reading this novel, there were a few things that kept me from giving the book a solid four stars. Declan’s character, the human part of the love triangle that includes Anya and the vampire Nicholas, could have been developed more quickly. He is slow to become a strong figure who can hold his own in a vampire world, as his character is somewhat two dimensional in the beginning. It was difficult through a good portion of the book to really feel his attraction and desire to be with Anya at any cost. He often seemed more like he was caught in a spell, or a vampire weaved web of compulsion, rather than having the feelings come from his heart. Eventually, though, the reader can feel his love and desire for her.
Declan’s draw to Anya, and his blanket accepting of other vampires, is also troublesome because he is supposed to be a Guardian. Someone born to see vampires as evil creatures that need to be hunted down and killed. This character trait is missing completely in Declan, making his Guardian status hard to accept. He readily accepts the vampire world and embraces a developing love of their race when he should have had at least some aversion to being near them.
A good deal of Blood’s Voice is the internal musing of Anya as her memory comes back in pieces. Sometimes she is strong willed and independent, and other times she has childlike insecurities with no control over her emotions. This is definitely reasonable for a person experiencing amnesia. But, the end result for me, was that she seemed unlikely to be a leader among her kind. As this series moves forward, she will probably head more and more in that direction as her insecurities lessen.
Something I truly enjoyed in this novel was the development of the secondary characters. They each had their own quirks and strengths; those meant to be liked are likeable and the ones meant to be disliked have the reader cheering for their demise. Their support and unique personalities mingle exceptionally well with the main characters, helping to make Blood’s Voice a novel that is definitely worth reading.
I thank the author for a review copy and I give the novel three and a half stars.

Anya Millar is not your ordinary vampire. There aren't many like her. Most that are like her are destroyed because they are considered an abomination to their kind. Anya has color in her eyes, they aren't a black void like the eyes of others of her kind. Only the vampires that don't feed from humans have color in their eyes.

I must admit that before I started reading this book I thought it was like any other book about vampires…. maybe similar to Twilight, but in this case, the girl was the vampire and the boy was the human. But how wrong I was! Don't judge a book by it's cover! Because after reading several pages, I noticed that the story is more complex than that, and that the similarities with Twilight disappear after a few pages.

She knows she's a vampire and that's about the gist of it. She remembers nothing of her previous life, which makes knowing how to blend into a society of humans that much harder. It helps that she is one of very few vampires that refuses to take blood from humans; she is strictly into animals. Anya decides to enroll in High School to hopefully gain the ability to fit in. She resides with another immortal, Star, who has been trying to show her the correct path to walk down. While in school she is drawn to Declan, a fellow student that is in some of her classes. Anya is then reunited with Nicholas, her vampire boytoy from years ago and feelings for him slowly reemerge. Then she bonds with Skye, Declan's supposed girlfriend, she discovers that all is not as it seems. There are a couple themes within the book that many not appeal to those uncomfortable with LGBT or love triangles.

Delcan is also not what he seems. Yes, he's a human and a human that has wholly and completely embraced the realities of being around, involved with, and in love with vampires. This sort-of makes his status of a Guardian a bit hard to believe at first. A Guardian is born unto this world to hunt and destroy all vampires, believing that the entire vampire population is evil.

The concept behind Blood's Voice is great. I love the story line. Each character, whether it's a main one or a secondary one, carries their weight throughout the book. As Anya's memories finally start reemerging and things get pieced together she discovers that she was being used as a weapon. It is the love and strength of the characters that help her through the "finding out who you really are" stage.

I will admit that I didn't like the 1st person view and formality when most of the characters talked. The book, language and writing-wise, reminds me too much of the Christopher Pike novels, Thirst 1, 2 & 3. I've reviewed 1 & 2 on the blog if you want to know how I really feel.(less)

First of all, there are a ton of good reviews on this book so my opinion will not be very popular. And for that I am sorry. I think the idea behind the story was really good and unique but I could not get passed the technical issues. I know I have positively reviewed books with technical issues before but in those cases the issues did not trip me up constantly and force me to have to put it down out of frustration.

The sentences were awkwardly worded in some cases, and in other they just did not...more First of all, there are a ton of good reviews on this book so my opinion will not be very popular. The sentences were awkwardly worded in some cases, and in other they just did not make any sense at all. The tenses shifted a lot through out the story and there were instances where there were incorrect words used. (ex. “Involution” which means entangled instead of “evolution” which means to change over time.. although another of my problems was that I could not tell what the point was in a lot of the internal thoughts like in this case.)

I am also not a fan of first person narratives the character has to be really exceptional for 1st person to not get annoying after time and I really could not feel a connection to Anya maybe because the language used was very formal and none of the characters had distinct voices so they all sounded like Anya, the narrator.

There was also a lot of dialogue and not enough action. The characters would talk about what happened and so the reader would not see the events as they unfolded. It took away some of the immediacy that could have been felt through some of the situations that had the potential of being very tense.

Ok I feel like I am being super negative and I hate when I have to do that but I wanted to be honest with my thoughts on the book.

Like I said in the beginning, the story/idea for the story was very good. I really liked the fact that instead of the usual Twilight-ish theme of the male being the vampire, that the powerful and potentially dangerous character was Anya a female. I also really liked the Nicholas/Declán/ Anya relationship going on. I thought it added a lot of really great complications. I also liked that in the beginning I was not sure that Nicholas was who he said he was or that he was looking out for Anya’s best interest. I think Áine created a wonderful world and a unique story line with lots of potential.

I am going to do something a little different here since I enjoyed the story and it was the technical aspect that made it less enjoyable for me I am going to give it two different ratings, an overall rating and a rating for the story by itself

What I liked: 1) There was definitely a unique writing style here. It's written from Anya's point of view, but we got her thoughts as well as her actions, every single one of them. Even those little impressions that she got of people while in general conversation. It was really interesting, and you were never left wondering what Anya was thinking. It was also very real, in that aspect. I know that my own thoughts are often jumbled, and jump around and take a while to sort out. I thought that it was great how timely different pieces of the plot were revealed. Anya is suffering from memory loss, and as the reader, you are wondering who she is and why she's lost her memory and different pieces of that are revealed all throughout the book. It really helps to keep the reader interested. 3) The plot. It was clever and creative, and while it took a while to get there, it ended nicely and succinctly. 4) Anya. I liked Anya as a character, and enjoyed watching her figure out who she was, and really grow into herself.

What I didn't like: 1) The biggest issue I had with the book was that the writing seemed...anachronistic to the time period. The way that they all spoke was a little too...old-school for me to believe that it was modern day. Just as an example, there was a lack of contractions (don't, can't, haven't) that my brain just didn't comprehend at first. I would have accepted it if it was just the immortals, the vamps and the like that spoke that way, cause they are all old-school. But the human teens did too, and it messed with my mind! 2) I would have liked to get to know some of the other characters better. It was so focused on Anya, Declan and Nic that I didn't really understand the roles that some of the other characters were playing.

Overall thoughts: An interesting read with a really fun main character, twisty plot lines, and an intriguing mystery. I was thrown off a little by some of the speech patterns, but once you get into the story, it's easy to look past those and enjoy as the plot unfolds. Once you do, you'll get to enjoy a good story! Oh, and a romance that gets pretty steamy at times!(less)

I could also see that there was a definite vision in this story, something that, if executed properly, would have been a great novel.

Now, unfortunately, I couldn't concentrate on the story long enough to even appreciate it or critique it properly. I can't tell if there are any plot holes or cliches because I was too busy trying to edit and re-write. Like I said, this could have been a great story, but the writing is, well, quite poor. I guess I wouldn't have minded so much if this had been the ARC, but the copy I was sent was saved as the “final” copy. So, taking this into consideration, I can say that this was very poorly edited. There are many redundant sentences that could have been taken out. There are also some awkward grammar choices, and odd sentence structures.

All that wasn't what bothered me the most though. What I was really disappointed in was the dialogue. Most of the characters had the same voice. They spoke the same way, used the same words. There weren't even contractions. I would have brushed it off if only Anya, Nicholas, Star and other generation-old creatures spoke this way, but even the normal teenagers in high school spoke like this. Now, I don't know if it's just me, but I'm pretty sure most teenagers use slang and contractions like their lives depended on it. It often sounds too formal to do otherwise.

The writing is pretty much my biggest problem with this piece. However, I've interviewed Áine and her three core characters, and have found that her characters actually have distinct voices. They have their own quirks and traits that I wish would have gotten through better in this novel. Obviously, Áine had great ideas, she just needed to execute those ideas better.(less)

First of all, I had a little trouble getting into the book as some of the writing felt very formal. Once I got used to the writing style, it kept my attention and a beautiful tale of romance and redemption unfolded. Anya is a vampire who has special abilities that set her apart from the average vampire. An insatiable desire to protect humans emerges through the entire book as well as her blooming romance with Declan, her human love, and Nicholas her vampire love.

This is a well thought out story about a vampire with a strange series of problems. I have never seen a vampire story quite like this one (a good thing about this one is it's different). Anya has no memories and then somehow manages to find herself maneuvering through the human world with two men who love her and an unknown enemy that is hell bent on destroying anything needed to get her back, especially her sanity.

After the first few pages of this book, my guard was up. There's a surplus of technical errors made in the writing style. Lack of commas, sentences phrased incorrectly...things like that. Not being one to quit so easily, I continued on with great trepidation.
