This collection includes 10 tales of computers that invent God, minds that travel through time, electronic ghosts, and deceased extraterrestrials. Some of these stories are award winners. Others are more obscure, but they all share one thing in common: They stem from a love of fiction and a fascination with the endless possibilities of our universe.

Science Fiction Addiction
Dead Men Don’t Cry is a collection of 11 short science fiction stories. It’s a highly varied collection in terms of the represented themes and sub-genres. The greatest strength of a collection of a mixed bag like this, is that if you’re into SciFi shorts, you’ll undoubtedly find at least a few stories you like; the inherent weakness of that however, is that you’ll also undoubtedly find a few that aren’t really your cup of tea. I found myself enraptured by stories like: Backlash, but skimming ove...more

Ms Fulda is an accomplished writer, easily sketching out new worlds and drawing the reader in with ten science fiction short stories. Her characters are a diverse collection of humans, clones, and computers, all infused with enough personality to resonate.
I couldn’t much connect with the first piece, “Let There Be Write,” a humorous non-fiction article starting off “In the beginning the author created the concept of the story.” It goes on from there in the biblical vein. (I didn’t coun...more

I really waffled between a 4 and 5 with this book; the writing is superb, the stories plotted well and they have all the right elements. I particularly loved Dead Men Don't Cry, Backlash, Pastry Run, Monument and A New Kind of Sunrise. There's some good stuff in here--raw entertainment, adventure, fun.

There were some good stories that were thought-provoking, a hallmark of science fiction. A couple of the pieces reminded me of Orson Scott Card's style--they hit hard in the guts or between the ey...more

Some time ago I stumbled upon Hexes and Tooth Decay. It was a little unsubstantial for me, but the high level of creativity and writing skill made me want to read more of Nancy Fulda's work.

Which brings us to Dead Men Don't Cry, a collection of ten short stories. While I didn't personally care for all ten, they are all imaginative, well executed, fully formed tales and this is one of the best short fiction collections I've ever read.

The themes range from rip roaring adventure with a twist ("Pas...more

This is a solid, well-written, and intelligent science fiction anthology. I’m giving the stories themselves four stars out of five. My main gripe is with the minor editing errors, but I’ll get to that later in this review.

The stories move fast and pack a lot of punch. This collection contains both action-packed and high-concept stories. It has thrilling race and chase sequences while it explores classic sci-fi themes such as artificial intelligence, cloning, and firs...more

From a high-speed space flight to deliver French pastries to the moon to a nomadic tribe struggling across a harsh world pursued by a sun with no mercy, Dead Men Don’t Cry demonstrates that in the science fiction genre there are still plenty of tales to be told.

I’ve never reviewed an anthology before. I’m usually more of a one-story guy. When I was invited to review De...more

I first heard about Nancy Fulda’s work through Escape Pod‘s recording of her short story “Movement.” It was a haunting, sad piece with such an expressive reading that I was awestruck. It appears that others agree since the story was recently nominated for a Nebula award.

Dead Men Don’t Cry is an anthology of her short stories. I’ll discuss each story individually and then provide an overview.

There is only one way to wake up in the morning, and that is with "Pastry Run". Ditch your current pastry delivery service and get this one. Space traffic and a solar flare? They deliver. My favorite of the great stories to be had in here.

Overall these science fiction stories by Nancy Fulda come with strong protagonists and thought-provoking story lines. Highly recommended for anyone into science fiction and looking for a great collection of them.

I found a good mix of well-imagined science fiction stories in this collection. The strength of the author’s imagination overcame a few minor storytelling deficiencies and left me with an overall positive impression. All of the stories were original, yet they often referred to well-known science fiction classics, and a handful of them delivered a powerful punch I will not soon forget.

A terrific collection of scifi/fantasy short stories. Some sad, some very interesting and some terribly clever and nearly all make you think. I can't decide if the one I was very angry with for ending and not giving me more of the story was my most or least favorite!

The stories also range in size, there are one or two that are just bite-sized that you can finish while standing in line at the grocery store and others are much longer.
