As I said in a previous review, he's a really good story-teller. This is a well-composed story of drug-smuggling and government abuse of power. From someone else you might just accept that as part of the story, from McNab you'd suspect that it was simply well-informed. I was most impressed with the character of the young girl. He clearly knows eight-year-old girls well enough to know what they are really like, but can also put one through the experience of having her family killed and then havin More...

This is the first book I've read from McNab but I'm sure I'll read more. Similar to the Rogue Warrior series, I like McNab a bit better. McNab is not quite as arrogant, but nevertheless, special forces must grow an in-your-face attitude.
I particularly enjoyed the detailed observations and the reasoning behind the tradecraft actions. What's Nick Stone, the hero, doing looking inside a fire extinguisher? What's he going to make with the kitchen supplies? One always gets a bit more involved w More...

I’ve sometimes wondered how publishers choose the endorsements they put on books. Presumably if you like the writer giving the endorsement, you’ll want to read the book they endorse. But I can‘t imagine what the thinking was that resulted in having an endorsement for Michael Robotham’s The Suspect by Andy McNab. Robotham writes psychological thrillers. McNab writes espionage thrillers; he is above all an action man. Their books couldn’t be more different.

Andy McNab is a pseudonym. Th More...

Remote Control is a great book with a great plot. It is written through the experiences of Andy McNab who is a great action book writer. However this book is being constantly ruined by his use of bad language. The book is basically about a person who discovers that his friend and all of his family have been assassinated by terrorist organisations, and the only person left in this family is a young girl. he then decides to save her but runs into many problems which he normally resolves with viole More...

McNab has done a great job of taking his experience in the SAS in Britain and turniing it into action thrillers chock full of characters who use the skills any good SAS soldier needs.

From beginning to end this a book that will keep you turning the pages, driving to the end.

Most good espionage thrillers are written by Americans, and this might cause us to forget that the British pretty much invented the genre, with John Buchan, Graham Greene and Ian Fleming among the most prominent pioneers. Andy McNab is now a member of the club. His style might not suit all, being politically incorrect and saturated with profanity. His approach to violence is also overly graphic. McNab has a tight approach to plot, and there is an intelligence that pervades his writing, that will More...

Flippin' awesome. This was the first book that got me into the idea of reading for pleasure as an adult. It's tense, gripping, full of suspense, twists and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. But it also has some real humanity in there as well, as trained killer Nick Stone has to learn the nuances of childcare! It's packed full of exciting tradecraft too, so if you're a wannabe James Bond like me, there's plenty to learn from it. As you might expect from a care More...

I started reading this not expecting to enjoy it. I made the mistake of reading another Andy McNab book first, Recoil, which happens to be the 9th book in the Nick Stone series and subsequently didn't enjoy it. Although to be fair a number of reviewers stated that this was not his greatest work.

This book was very enjoyable. The author gives an incredible amount of detail which obviously comes from him having "walked the walk".

I would recommend this book to More...

This thriller places its hero, Nick Stone, a British SAS operative on a deep-cover "deniable operation" assignment in the United States, into a situation that will be very familiar to readers of thriller novels: he's on the run, pursued by both bad guys who want to kill him, and police who want to arrest him for a horrible crime he did not commit. His employer has left him to fend for himself, and his only hope is to catch (or kill) the bad guys himself in order to clear his name.

McNab’s first fiction effort is a corker of a book, following a by-now familiar pattern in its structure but still remaining as fresh as its day of release.

The action-packed plot sees McNab’s hero Nick Stone taking out Irish bombers in Gibraltar, before we suddenly jump forward nine years and find him investigating the brutal slaying of a fellow SAS man in Washington. Before you know it, McNab concocts an enthralling odd-couple chase thriller, as Stone is forced to fly with the now- More...

Great read on the end of being an enjoyable action thriller. It's written smartly without having to sacrifice to become simplistic. McNab's an author who will just use a phrase and explain it easily without having a huge lull in the action. You can tell that he was somebody who did the deed back in the day and isn't afraid to relay that information through his character, Nick Stone.

Maybe if I read enough of these books, I'll be able to have enough know how of tradecraft to get by if I More...

Nice and pacey. Straightforward reading that managed to be brief but flowed well. Mcnab proves you don't need to be verbose to do this sort of book. A good story that seems believable and the scenes are credible. The hero isn't a superman, he makes mistakes, gets unlucky and gets hurt too. Then he wins. I'm definately going to read more.

The first Nick Stone novel, and one of the best. A more involved plot (something I find lacking in the more recent Stone novels), and a real page turner. Much more 'down and dirty' that other 'spycraft' novels I have read, and the main character is very engaging.

Typical spy-thriller (figure out who double crossed who, who is really pulling the strings, not getting killed while getting to a safe point with the good information), but with an 8 year old kid in tow! It just felt wrong, and a bit abusive. Oh, and when I read the info about the author, something about how he's been in Special Ops or something (I'm like the main character), so he can't give any info or 'they' will kill him. Just forced, like most of the book. Hmm, pen names and book agents..

Loved it. Slow to start and keeps taking you in diferent directions geographically and in the plot. It is fairly violent and there is plenty of swearing either of which particularly surprizing considering the authors background and the topic.

It took me a while to get into this story. It would've remained a *** for me but I loved Kelly and was relieved with the ending.

This book should be a 1.8 stars. The beggining of the book started out great and I was already looking into the next title in the series and then the begining kept going and going and it felt like we really weren't achieving anything.

I might try another book by this author another time but I am not in a hurry and I might try one of the newer ones to see if he has gotten better.

I read this back in 1999, when it was first published in the U.S. Like several of the other books I've read recently, I was just looking for something easy to re-read.

This is the first in his Nick Stone series of novels.

If you enjoy an exciting spy thriller with plenty of action this is a good choice. At times the violence is a little overly graphic but that may well be McNab's world. Worth reading if you're a fan of this genre.

Meet Nick Stone - cool, calm and collected with plenty of finesse and a level head in every situation. Stone really is a 'too good to be true' kind of character. And I love him!

I read this book a long time ago on a plane but I know that it was one of my favourites. The techniques that McNab outlines evidently come from experience and the action never lies dormant for long. I can remember this one being a little more complicated to read than the likes of Chris Ryan and Lee Child but i More...

Feels like Lee Child-light, with the same feel but with less brain, less action, and less tension.

Put it down, couldn't muster any feeling (positive or negative) to pick it back up.

This book was just O.K. It was very intense throughout and relatively confusing in the beginning. It had extreme violence and brutality. On average it said the "F-word" almost every page (not exaggerating).

The big story arc is nothing special (but still on-par and engaging) but the book is worth reading for its portrayal of how a covert intelligence operator thinks and works.
