4.5 dysfunctional stars.****Review posted November 28, 2013

There are plenty of great reviews already, so here I am adding my two cents worth. Also, I apologize in advance for adding so many quotes but I couldn't resist. Initially I thought I'd be making it short and dysfunctional commending. Now it's going to be somewhat longer and dysfunctional but still commending.

Set in the post-war environment of Lexington in the year 2021, we meet PD (Pandora) drug dealer Gordon and his best friend Carla.

I should disclose that the author is a friend. (Don't hold that against him. :) ) He's also a talented mutherf'er. This is my honest and as-unbiased-as-can-be review.

Gah! So good...Gordon is my f'ing spirit animal (minus the drugs and the crime and the...well, maybe not spirit animal...but I LOVE him!)

Ok, so I'll preface this by saying yes, I'm a huge fan of the "In the Company of Shadows" series and it is, indeed, one of my favorite reads. BUT, I tried really hard to read After Midnight as the...more

This is going to be a different review. Just because Gordon had that impact on me.

This is how this happened…

26th September 2013
Susan emails me to tell me about this book. I read the blurb and I am like “hell no”. So I tell her in the nicest way that I’ll read it eventually as I don’t really read sci-fy. She says it’s dystopian but she also says it’s very subtle but I don’t read dystopian either. Anyway I one-click. Yes, because I am that coherent and let’s face it, I’m THAT easy.

So a few weeks a...more

Recommends it for: Fans of ICoS and/or assassinfuckers

Waiting for this revised edition was torture—but so, so worth it.

After Midnight is a gritty post-apoc dystopian with compelling characters, terrific action, and mind-warping UST like a car crash caught in slow-mo by a Russian dash-cam.

The idea of being slammed up against a wall was never so sexy as this.

Pass me a smoke, bitchez: I'm officially #TeamFrost.

*4 stars on the proviso there WILL be another book!!!*

This book has all the ingredients of a novel that encaptures everything I love about the m/m genre, it is and raw and gritty, action packed, with characters that are complex and intriguing, the world is brought to life and the writing exceptional… and for 80% of this book I was totally engrossed in the fucked up lives of our two MC’s, who are far from likeable and live on the edge of danger. Having said that, there is also a fair amount of h...more
Sex, Drugs, Assassins and a War Torn Underworld…

I could roll around in it forever; but it gets even better when you throw in a drug war for violence; a sexy blonde porn star for spite; and an erratic anti-hero with a crap-ton of issues for every other feel there is. ALL this and I’m ecstatic! Santino Hassell is tripping solo after his brilliant collaboration with Ais on the “In the Company of Shadows” series and I really didn’t want him to cock it up! With a recipe like this how could he?

To start, I must say that I am an ICoS (In Company of Shadows) virgin. I never read that series -- despite my friends seem to be frickin' in love with it. My reason? I don't have a good record with long online series (which I call as 'cult' stories in this genre, for lack of the better term) -- I mostly DNF'ed them. So I just stay away from ICos.

However, when After Midnight re-edited version was starting to get the buzz, I was assured by Lenore that this spin-off worked as stand-alone novel. Son...more

4 Intense Twisted Stars!! Slow build leads to a gripping, wild ride to the end!! Gordon and Adam…KABOOM!!

Gordon Frost lives in a harsh brutal world, where you either succumb to the powers that be, or join forces with them, he chooses to join them. He left the life on the streets for what he felt was his only option to a better life, working for a ruthless drug dealer and producer of porn, Damian ‘Chance’ Perry. Gordon abuses himself with drugs and alcohol, and he’s out of control. If his substa...more

Okay, I am going to lay it on thick in this review - because Hassell deserves it! After Midnight is one smart, sexy, gritty, action packed read. With the occasional and expertly placed comedic relief in this dark world, Hassell spins an engaging tale of a street rat hitting rock bottom and realizing that he might deserve more.

As always, I preface certain reviews with this information: This author is my friend. And, like most of my author-friends, I became friends with Santino because I loved the stories he had to tell. That's my disclaimer. now my few words about this novel: It's a testament to this story that I was too engrossed to status update after my last one. One of the best things about Santino's characters is their growth is done so realistically. The other best thing is that there's a good story. Not just a...more

*Brief thoughts on pre-revisions version*

Sex, drugs, violence, underworld. LOVED IT.

Gordon, as an anti-hero, is wry, uncertain, but, to me, lovable. I feel protective of him. I didn't like him much in his introduction in "Fade", but he really had me in this book.

For ICoS fans, it's fun having a different story in the same world (and some "guest appearances" from our favs). But, you don't have to have read the series to enjoy After Midnight.

Is it possible to read something so sexy that you go blind?
Because I think I may have temporarily gone blind because of this book.

Spoilers through this review!

This book is sexy. God, is it ever sexy. And understand when I say sexy, I don’t just mean the slutty content, I mean everything about this book is sexy. The grit, the drugs, the turmoil, the world. All sexy. Every. Last. Word. Is. Sexy.

After having spent the last few months recovering from 'In the Company of Shadows' I find myself wanting more, yet again. After Midnight was everything I wanted it to be and much much more. It was packed full of exquisite male hotness and a hell of a lot of angst and I loved it!

I don't really remember much of Gordon from the ICoS series, however I adored him in this book. He's cocky and streetwise and arrogant on the surface but underneath it all is vulnerable and just didn't want to admit to hi...more

-----------NEED MORE!!!!!

In a nutshell this is a dark, raw romance that has intriguing chemistry between the two main characters. This world is uncomfortably similar to our own, but just edgy enough to keep you off center. I loved the relationship development, ensuing mysteries behind every character and the intense action scenes.

Gordon is one hot mess, but I loved him. And Adam? Oh, yeah, Adam *sigh*

And, I think, maybe, I might possibly be ready to tackle Evenfall. Because I'm not ready to leave this world yet.

This story is a spinoff story from the ICoS series which was re-written to fit with the events taking place here. Given that I have not read any of ICoS, though it has been on my TBR forever, I was able to read this with a clear mind about the characters involved.

I’m not a huge fan of futuristic type stories, but I was quickly sucked into this world where the people are trying to live after WWIII ravaged the country. I fell in love with Gordo...more
*Note: this is the review of the old version of After Midnight that I read back in 2011.

In the words of Gordon: this shit was fucking amazing!

After Midnight is a stand alone story in the In the Company of Shadows world, written by Sonny (half of the iCos writing team). It's different from the iCos books. Where as those are more elaborate and angsty (sometimes on the dramatic side of it), After Midnight seemed light and carefree. But deceptively so. Like the seemingly shallow main character Gord...more

UM.Let me start by saying...I have new bookboyfriends and a SERIOUS author crush. Not even going to hide it! SH, I love you.

Anyhoo...look at this:

The sexual chemistry between Adam and Gordon is ELECTRIC. Two bad boys have never been so good together.

I loved this book for so many reasons...It was gritty but not angsty, dark but not frightening, and a little bit sexy noir.

I have to collect my thoughts so I can express them all. But for now I will just say that every character felt so real t...more
This was an intriguing story set in Pennsylvania in the not so distant future, after WWIII has changed the landscape of America. Gordon is a drug dealer, an addict and a slut with no self-esteem. His best friend Clara helped set him up with the job and sometimes works as his protection. Chance, their boss, runs a porn business that also acts as a front for the drug dealing and only lets Gordon work there to appease Carla. He is also involved in an escalating gang war. As if Gordon's downward spi...more

I wasn't sure IF I should read it, having not read any of the other 'In The Company of Shadows' books but it was amazing.

The superb writing.

The amazing story line.

The flawed characters, ALL OF THEM!

Gordon, lives life with no care in the world, fucks or is fucked anything with a dick and a user of his own product. Nothing can bring him down, even meeting the one man who gives him a second shot at life doesn’t stop Gordon’s from being oblivious to everything around him, leaving his best friend, Carla to watch his back.

This is:

1. a don't read on the train you will miss your stop and be late for work book.

2. a contains every ugly thing I never read -- drugs, alcohol abuse, graceless porn, graphic violence, extremely casual sex, dystopian setting -- and yet I loved this story book.

3. a god dammit, those characters, this narrative, this book.

This is an oasis book. In a sea of samey stuff this provides captivating relief.

Loved. It was just so damn good.

Will leave my minor critiques for later.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved Gordon and even came to like, or at least understand, Adam. The secondary characters were great, too, especially Carla. I hope Mr. Hassell is working on a second book because the ending left me wanting more.

So now I'm ready to conquer ICoS. If the spin-off was this good, then the series must be fantasic.

Special thanks to my friend Lenore for gifting me with a copy of this book.
4.25 Brilliant Stars

Santino Hassell has made a fantastic stand alone inside the ICoS dystopian world, taking two minor characters that have a little appereance in this series, so it doesn't matter is you haven't read it, and has made a great story with Gordon, a loser, arrogant, brat, drug dealer, but insecure and vulnerable, and Adam "Mr. Greek", one of the Agency killer agents. There is no typical romance here, there is electrical atraction, UST, hot sex scenes, and a dark, sometimes raw story...more
4.5 for some minor troubles that are mostly my issues, not the book's. And for not having enough of Agents Beaulieu, Vega or Trovosky, hopefully at the same time.

I really, really liked this kind of, but not really, outside's look at the Agency and the ICoS world. It was tight, fresh and exciting on a first read. I am sure it will still be the next time.

I liked Gordon almost immediately. His attitude grew tiresome at some point (view spoiler)...more

ETA - there is a new revision of this book coming out shortly; I'm looking forward to that, since many of the problems I had with this were in editing in the early version I read. This review is from the original version, which I read in 2011.

This book managed to create a sympathetic protagonist out of a guy who was a drug dealer, a slacker, and so insecure that he would sleep with any attractive man who showed an interest. The text is a little rough - there are author notes at the beginnings of...more

I WANT MORE!!! Were the first words I uttered after finishing this book. Agh!

I always loved the ICoS world. It has this alluring factor even though it's barren with the aftermath of war. And I love the characters even more. I'll confidently say that I am now officially have a thing for gingers.
