Schizophrenic. That's the first word that comes to mind when considering this book. Two stars, per goodreads, says 'It was OK' and I can't say much more than that for it.

I was expecting a lot & perhaps that set me up for disappointment, but even elevated expectations can't take full blame for my opinion. There's no flow here. I realized early on that it wouldn't be all about the travel as I had hoped - a large chunk of the early chapters is dedicated to background about Wisner's failed ...more

So, I struggled about whether to give this book 2 or 3 stars...I decided upon 3 because I it does what it sets out to do, which is simply capture the reality of one man's experience. Wisner is left at the alter twice by the same woman and, to make a long story short, goes on an extended "honeymoon" over the course of 2 years with his brother that spans 5 continents.

Story-wise, it is a fairly interesting story...Wisner succeeds in depicting the little details of the travel experien...more

The beginning was a little too long - too much background into his broken relationship. I guess I was wanting more out of this book in the way of the travelogue, not the relationship that lent itself to the world tour. Not that the relationship part was uninteresting or poorly written, I just wanted more travel stories. His travel stories were not even quite what I was expecting but what I got out of it was some tips for travel. I learned how to get out of tickets and demanded bribes. But m...more

This is more than just a travel journal. This is the story about how the author's life changed through travel. It is a well written, often funny, and poignant look at his major life transition. It is about who we are and who we want to be. Soul searching at it's best. As other reviewers have noted, the background info in the beginning of the book is lengthy. Don't let that scare you. I feel that the back story is necessary, since it tells you where this author was emotionally when he decided to...more

Awful. I did not finish it. I have now found someone to hate more than shady politicians and that is the self glorified lobbyists. His depiction of himself and the fact that he can't see how despicable he is, is indeed telling as it is. I finally halfway through could not take his unflattering ego anymore. No wonder the girl dumped him and was depressed. I would have been to if engaged to him. I refused to give him the self satisfaction of one more minute of my time being interested in hi...more

I didn't finish this book, that's to say it got kind of boring after a while. No wonder it was selling for so cheap. IT was really interesting at first, it's about a guy whose girlfriend breaks up with him 5 days before their wedding,t hen he gets demoted at work. He decides to go on his honeymoon with his brother and eventually they quit their jobs, sell their houses, and decide to travel across the globe. I was excited about reading about their travels, especially of Syria (which he only spent...more

This book follows the author's journey after being left at the altar and his later decision to extend a "honeymoon" with his brother to a two-year global excursion. While Weisner's description of his personal life is often bland and forced, his vibrant descriptions of each new place he travels more than makes up for this early self-reflection. I recommend skimming any section revolving around his California life and pausing to savor each new section on his travel adventures. It'll m...more

The author's fiancée dumps him, after a nine-year relationship, one week before his wedding. He celebrates what would have been his wedding day and decides to take his brother with him on what was originally to be his honeymoon. This book is about Wisner's self-discovery and getting to know his brother on their two-year journey, where they travel to many parts of the world. Personally, I would hope that the author has adjusted his far-right leanings a bit more to the left now that he's seen ...more

I love travel books. And memoirs. This is the best of both. The author recounts being left at the altar by his bride, and his boss kicks him down the org chart. So he talks his brother into going along on the already paid for honeymoon trip, and the two are inspired to sell their homes, ditch their stuff, become best friends, and rediscover their joie de vrie. Along the way, they meet a cast of interesting characters, and wind up having a great time for two goddamn years! Highly readable.

A quick read. Considering the concept, length, and breadth of his (and his brother's) journey of two years across the planet I was very disappointed.

If the story had been about his break-up, or "stranger in a strange land", or rediscovery of brotherly love or a travelogue I believe it would have been a much better read.

As it stands, it was all of those things but each was presented anecdotally which left it as a perpetual appetizer of something great that is never presented.

Honeymoon with my Brother by Franz Wisner was not your typical travelogue. I would call the author a "man's man" though I don't like the expression—a former frat boy? Maybe he's a little insecure. Not the usual self-deprecating humor of Bill Bryson or J. Maarten Troost. Still, a very interesting story of traveling the world and bonding with his brother. Fascinating to learn how they arranged their lives to make it work, but they had the money to do it.

I read this in Mexico and sped through it so Hava could read it on our vacation and see what I kept laughing about! This is a great travel memoir about two brothers. One gets ditched a month before his wedding, takes his brother on his "honeymoon" to costa rica and then they travel together for two years. You feel like you're sitting in a bar talking to these guys, or wish you were! Fast, easy read that opens up your eyes to new places to travel.

This is the true story of a guy who was jilted left at the altar. He decides to take a trip around the world with his younger brother who he realizes he doesn't know too well, but who over the 2 years of traveling becomes his best friend. It was reminiscent of Three Weeks with My Brother by Nicholas Sparks though these brothers, Franz and Kurt traveled much farther. Its interesting and funny and lets you see the world thru their eyes.

The author is originally from my town (Davis). He gets dumped by his fiancee and decides to still go on his honeymoon. He invites his brother as they've drifted apart over the years. Not only is it a story of a rekindled sibling relationship it is a trip around the world. So if you have the travel bug as I do, you'll love traveling with these guys. After reading the book I think his ex-fiancee made a huge mistake. :)

You CA girls or Capitol folk may like this true story. A lobbyist for the Irvine Company gets laid off and left at the alter in pretty quick sucession. He ends up taking his recently divorced brother on his honeymoon and there they decide they're going to drop everything just travel for a year.

There's a lot that can go down over a year-long world tour. So some of it drags, but it's worth reading to the end.

I'd like to give this book 4 stars, but due to its cheesy-content factor, I really can't. What I CAN give four stars to is the content of the travel writing and Wisner's chapter on how we, as American's, are very blessed to have the good fortune we have. By good fortune, he means hot water & the like. Bad fortune because many of us don't know how to act compassionately toward others with less.

I really loved this book. Franz starts out sort of like a playboy and finds himself and his brother along the way. I was worried when I first started it but loved it, loved it by the end. I have read a lot of travel books and appreciated the honesty of some of the places I had previously read about. I also think he is a beautiful writer because he takes you to a place where you feel it too.

I love travel writing and enjoyed going vicariously with Franz and his brother around the world. They traveled to several places I have been, and it was fun to see things through his eyes. I actually saw this guy on Oprah when the book came out two years ago and have been meaning to read it for a while. His style of writing didn't quite click with me, but I recommend the book nonetheless.

I had high hopes for this book and found it didn't quite meet them. The author kind of irritated me and I don't think this book was quite sure what it wanted to be - a memoir of an amazing multi-year around the world trip, or a book about his ex and what went wrong with them.

In the end, I just found this book to be "eh" and that's too bad because I was really looking forward to it.

This book made me want to sell my house, pack my sh#t, and travel the world. It is nothing too deep, but a good, light read that offers more than many travel memoirs. Franz Wisner intertwines his reasoning for travel which is, at first, to escape an unrequited love. It is about love, introspection, exploration, and, in a way, what is truly important. Great book.

Enjoy.
