This was probably the 10th time I read this book. And I still love it as I loved it when I was little.
Of course now I read it with the background knowledge of the slight communist ideas the author wanted to give to children. But it didn't spoil the book. And my impression is that the talk about how the author meant this book to by a rule book or example story about communist life (or a pamphlet against the non-ideal society that is described in it, so many things are said about that) is way bigg

Ic ...more

I still love it! I read it because this summer I will spend a vacation in Croatia and I will be visiting Senj, where the book it situated! I learned there is also a tv series made in 1978 which was also filmed in the real Senj. So my husband will read the book too now and we will take the tour of all the sites from the book and series and see the real Uskok Castle and hotel Zagreb and everything!

For some reason, this is a book I read over and over and over in childhood. I loved it beyond reason. Unfortunately, I never did own a copy, and now it seems that it is practically impossible to obtain. I would really love to read it again! It's the story of a band of parentless children who live together and steal to survive, but somehow it is not depressing--it's just a great story.

I remember reading this book a VERY long time ago under the beam of my pocketsize flash light and getting yelled at in the morning for being so tired. I remember being fascinated with this orphan girl and her gang of orphan boys living under tenuous circumstances in what was at the time Yugoslavia. When Branko's mother dies and Zora takes him under her wings, a whole new world opens up for him. They are rebels and protectors, and while there a slews of adults around them, nobody really does anyt ...more

"die rote zora und ihre bande" or the red zora is a wonderful childrens book and one of my favourites even now, when i'm not longer a child. I definitely really like, because it explains well how it is to be alone as kid and what friendship means. Also, it is written from a childrens perspective, which is nice, and there isnt a black-and-white thinking but a very realistic and sometines controverse description of the people. furthermore, kurt held created a wonderful story and lovely characters. ...more

I can't believe that I'm the only one who owns this book! It was such a big part of my childhood and I always thought it was a German classic. Well, it is a classic in my life. Whenever I read it I wanted to be like Zora, fearless, respected by all boys and I always tried to be like her. I think it shaped me in many ways.

PS
În substrat conţine unele idei procomuniste!

This was one of the fist books that made me cry.
I was still in Primary School and read this as part of an assignment.

Haven't read it again since but I still remember how much I loved the story & characters and how invested I was in them.

This rating may seem a bit unfair because it is a really good story and well written, but I just never felt bonded with Zora or Branko or with the story at all.

This was an immensely important book to me. I still vivdly remember the thorn nest they lived in, and Zoras mother who died due to her longing for Albania.
