Just finished Katherine Langrish's "Forsaken" which came from a Danish legend and a poem "The Forsaken Merman" by Victorian poet Matthew Arnold and I feel my heart ripped into two.
It's quite a passionate story of a young mermaid, Mara's search for her human mother Margaret after she has left her merfamily to return to land to pray once again for her soul in church. Just like Andersen's "Little Mermaid" we are left questioning what we would sacrifice for our souls.

A small but beautiful book told from the point of view of a young mermaid whose human mother has returned to land. Exquisite.
