What if every legend you’d ever heard about vampires, werewolves, changelings and other mythical creatures turned out to be true? For young Lilly Taylor, the day her parents disappear marks the beginning of her discovery of just how real all those myths truly are.
As Lilly journeys to Canada to meet the family that has been kept hidden from her for practically all her life, pieces of her heritage begin revealing themselves to her in strange and unsettling ways. Why do two ravens seem to have foll...more

The Raven Sage: Part 1 Raven by Suzy Turner
This is one of those plots that sort of creeps along and holds you there for quite a while. Once you get to about 25% of the book it nails you. This does not have one of those page turner openings with the heart-pumping heart stopping hook. But Suzy Turner proves that you don't need that to make good stories work.

Raven is one heck of a read. I came to it cold. I hadn't even read the reviews, oddly I came across this book on a facebook book launch, and so it came to be that I ended up reading Raven.
It's YA, but I found the tone mature. It's got none of that teenage squee hype to it. And you know what, that's okay, because not all teenagers are overenthusiastic irritations. Some teenagers are withdrawn, quiet, intense, and this is the kind of book those readers would enjoy. What I would call the goth deep...more

I found this story an entertaining enough way to fill in a few hours of my time, but ultimately not enough to persist with it. I gave up about the bit where a 17 year old boy starts professing his interest in a 13-year old girl. Lily is seriously too young. I mean... I said to myself "I'm going to pretend she's fifteen" to force myself to continue with it.

I've been persistent in the past, and even when I haven't enjoyed a book, I've ploughed through to the end. Evidently, however, my willpower has weakened and I found that I just could not carry on reading this book.
Lilly was a bit like dirty dishwater as far as characters go. She was dull and lifeless and I felt no qualms about pulling the plug on her.
Here is an example of the dialogue in the book. I think it indicates fairly well why I just had to put the book down:

For some people, there are many things to get addicted to. For me, it's a good book that gets me hooked. And Raven? It's a fantastic book that had me hooked from start to finish.
It's the story of Lilly Taylor, a teenage girl living in England. The kids at school call her Mellow Yellow because everything she wears is yellow.
Lilly is a lonely girl who doesn't receive affection from her parents. Her mother feeds her tinned food, and usually it is cold.
But she thinks this is normal. After all, sh...more

I wanted to like this - and it was a fine idea, but there were so many problems with the writing that they obscured any positive points. WHere to start?
The writing style is basic, at best. Drowning in adverbs isn't my idea of fun. The main character was flat and completely age-inappropriate. The romance was stupid from the age gap and the insta-love nature of the relationship. The named pop culture references grated. The characterisation was non-existent a lot of the time - everyone Lilly meets...more

I was lucky enough to receive a free ebook edition of this book from the Author, Suzy Turner, in exchange for an honest review and while I struggled with some parts of it, overall I enjoyed the story. It's pretty short so it was a quick read, but sadly I couldn't get it on to my Kindle so I struggled with reading it on my computer. Regardless, here are my thoughts:

My review:
I didn’t know what to expect from Suzy Turner’s debut novel, but I am sincerely glad that I got to review this wonderful book! I was captured from the first page. Raven is the first book in the series and gives a very good introduction to the surroundings, characters and story itself. Even though it is the first book in series, then it still gives a standalone story. One more thing which is wonderful about this book – it can be read by middle grade, young adults and adults like me. It...more

Downloaded free for Kindle. I like the fact that it was a shifter story, yet I'd never read any shifter into 'raven' books, so this was different. My concern thought was that Lilly, while she has been sheltered her whole life with a mother who barely speaks to her and shows her no love whatsoever, and father she hardly ever (to almost never) sees; is only 13 yrs of age. When the only life she's known is turned upside down at the disappearence of her parents one day, she goes to live with a grand...more

Raven is a spine tingling teen (YA) paranormal story with several different twists and turns. I was honestly pleased with all the unique elements within the story that was written by Suzy Turner. Her writing style, effort to entertain, and create a mind boggling adventure truly has paid off in this debut story.
Many times as I read, I was wowed. A lot of the elements or even simple little pieces Suzy wrote I have never read or remember reading anything similar. Raven was a refreshing read.

I really enjoyed this book far more than I thought I would at first. I thought it would be a fun little book to read and that would be about it since it was free and all, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great one to hook you in for the books that follow! I fully enjoyed reading it so much so that I am looking forward to continuing on with the series.

Here's the deal. I started reading this book, and honestly didn't like it from the first few pages. The writing is terrible. The editing is non-existent. In the beginning of the book Lilly is shoved out of her house by her mother, and goes to school. We learn that Lilly has been "abused", if neglect can be abuse, her whole life. She rarely sees her father, and her mother. They stay cooped up in one of the rooms in their flat and never come out. Okay, fine. Then they disappear, and she takes it i...more
Wow. I think this might just be the worst book I've read in my life. I read the sample and felt doubtful, but figured all those good reviews had to mean it got great later. I struggled through until just past the half way point, hoping it'd get better, but when I was ready to throw my e-reader at a wall, it was time to stop the misery. Unrealistic, cardboard characters. Shallow, undeveloped 'instant' relationships. Boring plot, poorly constructed. Badly written. Very poorly edited. No depth.

Wow Wow Wow, I don't even know where to begin with this review, so let me start here. Usually I am very skeptical when it comes to reading books with a paranormal aspect and I think that it's because they are so far-fetched in regards to reality that I have a hard time connecting with the characters, but this book changed that for me for sure. In fact, i'm going as far as to say that THIS IS the BEST paranormal YA book that i've ever read.

After she moves to Canada to live with her paternal grandfather, she finds out there's more to her (and her family) than meets the eye. Raven gets a 3.5 star rating. I'm puzzled by the choice of cover art for the book because the main character was never really frightened like the girl on the cover is. I mean, yes she was confused (who wouldn't be when their entire life changes in the course of a few weeks) but never really gave me the impression that she felt like the girl on the cover looks.

Raven is Suzy Turner’s first novel in the series, and I found it to be an entertaining read to say the least. I read it over the entire weekend and loved it. This is when Lillian is thrown into her new life in a strange world. She embarks on an incredible journey and slowly begins to unravel the daunting mystery behind who she really is. Lilly is then forced to move to Canada to live with her grandfather and father’s family that she never even knew existed. From then on the secrets about Lilly’s family are told and Lilly’s...more

I feel rather sorry for Lilly. She has been living a lie her whole life. Thinking her mother didn't love her and then to find out her mother and sister were both killed by the witch impersonating her. Not having one moment alone with her father except for him sneaking moments at night to give her books based on supernatural stories.

A light read with great potential as the story moves forward.
Lilly has only known one way to live. Cooped up in a flat with her unloving mother and hidden father, eating only from canned goods, wearing yellow clothes to school and coming back right after under the staring glance of her mother, is her daily routine since forever.

I am so glad that I was given the chance to read this amazing book. All of the characters fit so well together. From the first page you feel for Lily. She has a mother who hates her and restricts her to school and home. Lily has no idea that this is not normal. This has been her life for as long as she can remember. Lily's father is more of a shadow than a person. Little does she know that there are so many secrets and lies. One day Lily comes home to find their home empty. Her parents are gone...more

I found that this book would be more suitable for younger teens, no real violence, sex or language and it is a little slow in the beginning. Lilly has a strange childhood as her parents are reclusive and distant and she feels alone all the time. When they suddenly disappear she is shipped off to her grandfather in Canada and and he reveals the family secret. She finds out that all the fairy tales are true, shape-shifters, werewolves, vampires and witches are real. I had trouble with the instant...more
For many, the world of the supernatural is real. In this novel, you'll meet vampires, werewolves, changelings, witches; and of course, an evil stepmother.

What a wonderful way to start a new series. I love paranormal books and have read quite few now but I have to say that this one was just fantastic. The characters are complete and draw you in. The author has a way with words that is "natural" and allows her to introduce new characters throughout the book without the reader feeling overloaded with information. You are there with the main character from the very start and enjoy all her adventures, thoughts and feelings.
