A pretty interesting piece of early science fiction. A man takes a wrong stop on a train and finds himself in a town inhabited by unfeeling people and strange jelly creatures. He comes to learn that almost every human in the town is actually a golem, created for a specific task, and the jellies are there to hunt down interlopers and those not following the city's plan. John Keith Laumer (9 June 1925–23 January 1993) was an American science fiction author. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, he was an officer in the U.S. Air Force and a U.S. diplomat.
