I haven't read Archie since I was about eleven, but the announcement of the Riverdale universe's first gay character had me interested. How would such a peachy keen, Happy Days atmosphere take on a dreaded homosexualist?
The answer: a lot better than other media darlings have.
The stories are always going to be pure bubblegum, but in this respect Kevin Keller is treated just like any other character. Sure, he's single, but so are all the others at the moment. It will be interesting to see how his...more

Separate from the actual character Kevin Keller and how he makes a life in Riverdale among the Archie group, it's really wonderful that the comic that has been around for generations has included a homosexual character. I love that a company long standing is constantly evolving and trying to be all inclusive.

(eComic via Comixology.) Meet Kevin Keller, wholesome, adorable, and gay. The introduction of a gay character to the Archie universe is typically sweet and cheesy, and I will admit that I got a bit teary-eyed a couple times. Best moment? Veronica getting a raisin stuck in her smile. Reggie barely makes an appearance in the majority of the issues in this collection, so his role during Kevin's school presidential campaign came as a surprise.

Kevin Keller is the new kid in town. He and Jughead have competitive eating contests, he enjoys talking about books and movies (but not musicals) with Betty, and he loves hanging out with Veronica. His dream is to attend West Point, serve in the military, and then become a journalist. Also, he is gay.

I think I like the second volume (which I read first) better. This one was very introduction-y, which is important but a little boring. Archie barely makes an appearance so far in the Kevin Keller stories, but of course Ronnie is his new BFF, Betty is jealous, and Kevin and Jughead have a food-based bromance. Actually, I'm kind of shipping Kevin and Jughead. It would come as no surprise to me if Jughead is gay.
It's great that the Archie comics are progressive and supportive of a gay character. Sadly though, that doesn't equal a great read. I am not a big fan of Archie being set in the 21st Century. I have a hard time getting past the superficial, MTV-influenced world where the characters now live. If you don't like watching shows like Laguna Beach, etc. then you'll probably want to skip this title.
Kevin Keller is a newer addition to Riverdale. He's a gay teenage boy that goes to school with the gang. It's neat to have a whole book about him and I like that not every story focuses on his sexual preferences, mostly it's just incidental.
While this is not the most original or interesting piece of cartoon fiction available in the comics medium, it does introduce a gay character into the Riverdale community. Dan Parent does an amazing job making Kevin Keller right at home among Archie and the gang. This is presented, like the other Archie comics, in a way that is pretty much accessible by all audiences. Well done and my praise to everyone involved.

the world of Archie reminds me a little of Pleasantville, but with less messed up stuff under the surface.
In the past when I've talked about graphic novels and comics to groups of librarians, I always admit that I am not a fangirl from way back. In fact the only comics I recall reading as a kid was Archie! (Plus I read all the newspaper comic strips and still do.) So it was a blast from the past to be in the world of Riverdale and see how an openly gay teen is treated. Turns out that after he fends off the advances of Veronica, he makes a lot of friends in town.
