With his sparkling eyes, egg-shaped head, waxed mustache, and waspish manner, Hercule Poirot seems too dandified to discover "whodunit." But in thi... read full description

What a treat! This collection of stories was published in 1951, but turns out to be entirely comprised of early Poirot stories, of the same 1920s vintage as "Poirot Investigates". I had thought that Christie simply returned again and again to writing short stories about Poirot over the course of her long career, but it seems that instead she went through a hugely prolific period in the early days of her sleuth's popularity, and that the stories (published in various magazines) were sim More...

This is a collection of Agatha Christie short stories that were gathered together and published in the 1970's (though the bulk of the stories seem to have been written much earlier than that). And you know, I have almost nothing to say about this book. If you like Christie, and are looking for a (very) fast read, the stories are fine. They are extremely simple, but mostly charming. If you can't figure out the "twist" before the end of 90% of them, than you are probably new to the world More...

I chose "The Under Dog and Other Stories" by Agatha Christie for my yearly attempt to prove to myself that I am still literate. And yes, I am still literate. These are Poirot stories, and Poirot is my favorite fictional detective. Most of them are pretty short and not so great. So, that's that. Goodbye, "reading," I'll see you next year.

The great Egg-Shaped detective solves mysteries, exercises his gray matter and twirls his mustaches. That description always makes me think of Humpty Dumpty with a mustache. 9 short stories for quick bedtime reading from the mistress of mysteries.

I am not as big a fan of AC's short stories as I am of her complete books. I think her plots are much better when they are developed more fully. Not a favorite of mine.

Not as good as the other short story collections, particularly the Miss Marple ones. Also, the stories were more predictable than Christie usually is.

Agatha Christie is definitely the master - I wasn't sure that I would like this one but these short stories are great.

If only I knew more French one-liners...

Good combination of medium and short stories.

This was the first Agatha Christie book I've read that was a collection of short stories rather than a full novel. I liked the fact that each chapter was a self-contained mystery, but I didn't like that this didn't allow for much detail in each individual mystery. With her full length novels I can occasionally figure things out, but not with the short stories.

Charming early Peroit—lots of attention to personal appearence, lots of “Enchante” saying, and lots of grisly upper-class murders. I didn’t enjoy the title story, perhaps, as many of the others in this collection, but I did like the considerate italicized suggestions that we try to unravel the mystery before the whole thing is explained by our Belgium hero.

Poirot/Hastings short stories written in the 20's but bundled in the 50's. I find I don't enjoy the early-career short stories as much, as they don't seem as fleshed out. Some interesting stories and solutions, but not as satisfying than the novel-length books or the later-career short stories.

As many mysteries as I read, I have never read any Hercule Poirot. This is me remedying this situation. While I think he'd annoy me in real life, he an entertaining character and the mysteries keep you guessing. I can see why these mysteries are classics and timeless.

I'm sure I have read this before, but it's been so long I think I might get away with it! I just need something to read while I wait for some books to come in that I have on hold at the library. You can't go wrong with Mr Poirot.

I love Agatha Christie! I love Hercule Poirot! The only complaint I have about this is that I think Agatha Christie is better at novels than short stories -- it gives her more time to develop the plot.
