This is a fun, conversational cookbook geared toward veggie types from the land of bacon grease. If your mom had a coffee can full of that stuff on the stove, you will probably find something to like in this book. It's also from the time before veggies were obsessed with farm to table and fresh ingredients. Remember, back when we are all scouring the dry goods shelves of our once tiny health food stores? But you know you wanted to find an excellent use for nutritional yeast! This is it: the ...more

This is such a great cookbook. It is almost certainly one of my favorites, and that's saying a lot. It's great for a starter vegetarian (the recipes are easy, and the ingredients are easy to obtain), but it's great for a more experienced vegetarian, too. Pages abound with comfort food and crowd pleasers, and most of the recipes are super easy to follow. My only complaint is that sometimes the recipes aren't indexed in the back so well. I've had trouble finding things again, so I have to mark ...more

Ann Jackson offers up tons of delicious (mostly vegan, all vegetarian) homestyle recipes in a charming and super inviting style. I'm obsessed with her recipe for greens (I do add a few drops of liquid smoke, and sometimes caramelized onions). also, the big bubba tofu is amazing. the one flaw is that her vegan variation for the pecan pie doesn't really work--the pie completely sank (though it was still delicious)

This cookbook is so good it's hard for me to even believe it. I bought it after reading some positive reviews, and all my expectations have been exceeded! My favorites so far are the recipe for steamed greens with peanut sauce (not very Southern, I know, but oh so delicious!) and the recipe for okra and potatoes.

This is the best book ever. Secrets revealed about recreating country ham grease and fried chicken gravy and all the happiest things, without hacking up any creatures! Ann Jackson is a hero of mine, for her skillz and slow southern ways.

This is my all time favorite cookbook. Fried "chicken" tofu and corn bread dressing - YUM! I have an older edition that has great 50's graphics and cute stories.

Part of my southern cookbook collection.
Packing away now as we declutter the house, preparing to put it on the market.
