A very serious read about Israel's War for Independence written in the eyes of a 17-year-old soldier as remembered by an 80-year-old man. Incredibly moving and enlightening, but there's no silver lining here, no happy ending. I learned a lot about the period and I highly recommend this book. But you'll need to read something light afterwards because of the depth of darkness it brings to you.

It was ok, but so vague, yes, the intensity of war and what it did to the soldiers. But I would like to have known more details of where and when.

Yoram Kaniuk is one of Israel’s most acclaimed writers, but only a few of his 32 books have been translated into English. His latest book, “1948,” is published as part of the New York Review of Books Lit series “devoted to publishing contemporary books of literary merit from around the world.” In doing so, NYRB Lit has brought one of the most insightful and beautifully written war memoirs of recent years into the English-speaking world...

I barely remember this, which is only partially a function of moving distractions. It was hard to get through, as there was no narrative arc. It felt like a stream of rambling about the author's experience fighting in the Independence War, and his current bitterness and cynicism about the whole thing. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it in English, but in Hebrew it was torture.

This is a very good book about Independence war in Israel

I wrote a long review and it disappeared! I loved this book. I wonder where my review went.

Bitter and pessimistic. But, very well written. Brings back many memories.
