Greg Iles has spoiled me with Mortal Fear.
Every novel I read by him now has the unenviable task of having to measure up to what I consider his best work. Regardless of whether it stands up in the face of this scrutiny, He can't seem to write a bad novel. He is as good if not better than any of the "masters of suspense" diluting the market today. Dead Sleep is a clever thriller in which

Not far enough into this book to have a sense of how I am going to feel about it, but I am pretty much a Greg Iles fan so hope springs eternal.

Wow!
From the back cover:
They are called the "Sleeping Women," a series of unsettling paintings in which the nude female subjects appear to be not asleep, but dead. Photojournalist Jordan Glass has another reason to find the paintings disturbing: The face on one of the nudes is her own - or perhaps the face of her twin sister, who disappeared and is still missing.

This is absolutely on my top 10 for 2001. It's just about the best thing I've read since Greg Illes' Mortal Fear. Jordan Glass, professional photographer, is wandering around an art museum in Hong Kong and happens on a special exhibit of paintings of women who looked dead. She and the other museum visitors were jolted as they saw that one of the models was the spitting image of herself. Only she knew it was of her identical twin sister who had been missing for more than a year. The story is comp...more

There's a difference between finding a book truly entertaining and actually thinking you grew as a person as a result of the read.
This book is soley entertaining.
A thriller told from the perspective of an award-winning photojournalist who snaps after her sister is taken by a serial kidnapper and then finds herself working with the New Orleans police to find a killer before he murders and paints portraits of the dead women.
Super-quick read.
Addicting, really.

I thought it was a little strange that I read this book which dealt with art and violence shortly after reading What I Loved, another book about art and violence. This book was not as good as the other, however, although I liked the mystery behind it, which I felt was pretty original. What I did not like was the male author who wasn't all that great at writing in a female first person voice; stereotypes galore. It was engrossing, however, even if the only time I had to read this book was on the ...more

WOW! I looked and looked for a book to have my book club read. I found this one and that it had won awards I believe...
Talk about a page turner, again the main character is a photographer but I so identified with their views. Textured, complex characters, strong woman role, exciting, thrilling, tension filled - I had to stay up almost all night to read this becuase I had to know the end!
You will LOVE it!

Anyone who enjoys southern writers and/or lurid crime novels
Great writing with a very creepy premise. Though everything I've read of Iles is written in the first person, usually through the eyes of one his male characters, this one is written in the first person from the perspective of a woman. A novel touch - no pun intended. The plot mostly unfolds in New Orleans, and I never get tired of reading Iles's vividly descriptive writing about the south.

This was the first Greg Iles book I read and I instantly became a fan! The story had me from the very first few pages and kept me interested throughout. When a woman recognizes a nude in a painting as her missing sister, she will stop at nothing to discover the truth. I didn't want to put the book down and then I went out and found as many other Iles' books I could get my hands on!

An interesting thriller read with a predictable ending. Once you have read a few dozen murder books, you tend to be able to predict the ending of most of them. Still, it was worth the time on the airplane and kept me reading. I liked the overall plot which was a little more interesting than just a regular who killed her book.

no onerecommends it for: suspense lovers
One of Greg Iles's very best. In Dead Sleep, Mr. Iles, as in several of his other books, writes--most convincingly--in first person, as a woman (he does so, as well, in Blood Memory). This book is truly creepy in that it gets into the mind of a sociopathic killer. A MUST READ for those who love truly gripping suspense.

The first book by Greg Iles that I read. On my way to visit my family in Mexico three years ago, I picked up this book in the airport. I immediately became engrossed in the storyline. The book mixes science and religion - truth and fiction. Just remembering it makes me want to read it all over again.

I really liked this book. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen. This was the first book I have read from Iles and I really like him. I love the way he mixed the mystery and love story together. Perfect mix. I'm sure I will read many more!!

I've read quite a few of his books, and this is my least favorite so far. Not that big a mystery, a scramble at the end to pull it all together. *shrug*
If you want to try Iles, go for something like Mortal Fear.

This was a typical murder mystery with a few twists and overall an average read. I thought there was too much detail during some of the intimate parts that took away from the story and were unneccesary.

Great book - usual Ilis intricate plot with outstanding character development. He doesn't leave a hanging detail so always satisfying endings. Glad I still have a few more Ilis books to read!

An entertaining read; page turner; twist ending. A famous photographer works with the FBI to discover her sister's killer when she discovers a painting of her dead sister in an art gallery in Asia.
