This story takes places during a war (typical German lit) presumably WWI. It is a war character story where Mother Courage looks after a myriad of "her children." Brecht comically names the honest son "Swiss Cheese." Brecht perhaps points to the reason Germany is in a constant state of war: "You know what the trouble with peace is? No organization. Mother Courage and her Children by Bertolt Brecht
For someone who uses very Brechtian ideas in all of my directing work, it was long time to put in some full sit down and read time on his works. Supposedly this play is difficult and people don’t really like it or it’s hard to read. So, I’m crazy, because I loved it and couldn’t put it down. I read the Eric Bentley translation, perhaps it is all in the translation, but defintely a good read, especially in these days and times.

politicians, sociologists, the next generation
Arguably one of the best anti-war plays ever written. Each of Brecht's plays are politically charged and though written decades ago, more socially relevant than ever before. Readers can (hopefully) think of plenty of people right now who parallel Mother Courage's role in society and come to their own conclusions on the direction that we're headed toward.

Depressing! During college I had to design the costumes for this play and all the colors I chose were drab blues and grays. I think that adequately sums up the tone of this Brecht piece.

Fans of Theatre and directors
It's the kind of play that gets bettr with each reading. I was not a fan the first time I readit, but had to read it again for another class, and I just devoured it. Also, it helps to think like a director when reading, and learn a little about Brecht's style and of epic theatre

If you enjoy political theater this is a must-read. If you enjoy Brecht in general, same thing.
It would be wrong to say it's an enjoyable play because it isn't something to relax to or to laugh about. It is however a very good play and one that won't leave you untouched.

chuck hogle wrote a most excellent paper about this play. Without that, I probably wouldn't have understood how genius of a commentary mother courage is on the tension between the abstract and the particular. I'd give his paper five stars for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once you get used to the in-your-face directness of the dialogue and the brutal absurdism on display, this ends up being, next to Remarque's classic "All Quiet on the Western Front," one of the best anti-war messages ever.

My introduction to Brecht, after working on Szechuan a bit. Fantastic introduction to Brecht's concepts of alienation theatre, and brilliantly written.

Amazing book. Great style and such witticism to describe the situations. I had wanted to read this book for a long time, and was not disappointed.
