CSI -New Yorks writers' room has this dog-eared right next to the subway map and the list of 5 words that must be mentioned in every episode ...i digress. This is a graphic - as in pictoral - walk, crawl, flight though the infrastructure that keeps New York humming. Really - any good size city working. There is an equal amounts of picture to text; the layouts make the items in discussion crystal clear. The section on transportation was an eye-opener. And the amount of product that comes via ship...more

A young friend of mine asked me to find out about those orange and white chimney-looking things they sometimes put up in the city streets. You know the ones. With the steam billowing out the tops? I had been at The Strand Annex (lost their lease! closing by the end of August! tragedy!) earlier in the week, and had glanced at this book, wishing I had all the money in the world to spend on the reference collection I someday hope to have. I decided that answering this young man's question was worth...more

This book is brain candy for nerds who love to see how things work, and the best book of its sort that I can think of since David Macauley's book.

Am only halfway through this but love love love this. Exactly the sort of thing the young geek I was would pore over for days and weeks. Great details and illustrations of subway systems, water mains, parking meters, and more--all the crap that we use everyday without remarking it. And full of such groovy little bits of information! (The different ki...more

What a cool book! If you've ever wondered how the basic infrastructure of a city operates, from telecommunications to traffic to sewer to electricity to steam to etc., this book presents everything in an accessible, engaging, and fun - but not dumbed-down or simplistic - manner. Unfortunately, I lack the design/illustration vocabulary to articulate the style of the book's illustrations and diagrams - I generally say "It's kind like The Sims or Ikea instructions - which is to say that...more

Just like NYC subway map shower curtains, this wonderful book is a crucial addition to the collection of every NYC urban nerd. Ascher covers all aspects of NYC infrastructure, from the subways, freight rails and ports, to the ways it generates and transmits electricity and steam, to telecommunications, radio, water, and waste management. It is a very handy and well-illustrated guide to the guts of the Big Apple. Keep one handy on your coffee table, next to Gotham and The Power Broker.

If you live in NYC, run out and buy the book. A fascinating romp through the infrastructure and logistical makings of our city. How the steam delivery system works...what's gross about NYC sewage transport...how high-tech tunnel brushing is...how low-tech so much else is. Every (hyper graphical / well-illustrated) page is engrossing.

A wonderful root & branch exploration of the structural & mechanical elements of what makes a city. The subtitle generalizes, this book is quite focussed on New York city. That said, it describes in detail much of what one might hope to know about electrical transformers, trains, sidewalks & the like in this city.

New York City infrastructure illustrated! Full of colorful, clear diagrams and illustrations with relevant, digestible information. Perfect for urban planners or anyone curiously geeky enough to wonder how it all works (or doesn't work). I only wish this were published for every city...

very interesting. walks you through the inner workings of all your utilities, and lots of other things i always kind of wondered about (traffic light timing? how cell phones work?). at least 75% of the book is pictures/diagrams! thanks mark for "getting" me this on my b day.

I found this an amazing book if you love discovering how things work, esp in a city like NYC. Strange to say, but it was a real page turner for me.

Accidently brought this home from a visit to Beth inside our bag of kids books. I promise to mail it back! (But I have to read it first because it's so fascinating to learn how everything works in New York's infrastructure.)

In college, I took a course called "How Things Work" where we learned about planes and bicycles and VCRs. This book takes the concept to the city level- it's amazing to learn what goes on to make a modern city work.

A couple hundred pages about the infrastructure and systems of New York City. Great detail, amazing drawings and photographs. Gives an unbelievable sense of intimacy to the city - nothing happens by accident.

A really interesting look into the underbelly of New York City. Some chapters were more exciting than others, but as a whole, the book holds up well.
