THE TOWN WAS BUZZING OVER RAFE's RETURN...

Some said there would be trouble. Bound to be. Trouble hung around Rafe MacKade like a bell around a bull's neck. Oh, he was as handsome as ever, with those devil's good looks the MacKades were gifted -- or cursed -- with. If a female had breath in her body, she couldn't help but look twice at that loose-legged stride that seemed t...more

This was the greatest, sweetest and loveliest book ever. It might be short but in this case it worked just fine. Seriously don't stop reading this book just because it's shorter than most of NR's books because this one is a really outstanding read. I haven't read much from this author, only her In Death series and her In the Garden trilogy ... I'm sorry to mention that while I like her In Death series, I didn't enjoy that much the other one. And eventually I got a bit bored of the In Death serie...more

Frankly, the day I have the sales record and the fanbase that Nora Roberts has, will be the day I criticize her books. Though this book felt sort of "formulaic", it was a consistent read. When I pick up a Nora Roberts book, I expect to be 1.) Entertained; 2.) I expect lots of romance and heat (not overly hot...just hot. Romance readers will understand what I'm saying.), 3.) I expect the characters to fall in love despite the fact they never expected to, and 4.) I expect a H.E.A. (Because I am a...more

I really, really, really loved this book... it was oh so sexy and romantic!!! I can't wait to read the other books in the series.

So, I ended up reading two of the four MacKade brother books by Nora Roberts yesterday. I've read the series before, but it's been years, and I felt like this would be a great chance to revisit one of my favorite author's contemporary series books.

In The Return of Rafe MacKade, the second of the four MacKade brothers, hellions and bad boys all, has come back to town, ten years after the death of his mother and his subsequent abrupt departure from town. In true romance novel fashion, Rafe is now...more

I'm still fairly new to Nora Roberts, and it's because of her best-selling status and huge backlist that I decided to give her a try in the first place. Spellbound didn't wow me, frankly, though I did like it. Since it was the cheapest of her books at the time, I figured I needed to give her at least a few more shots, assuming it wasn't likely anywhere near her best. Then the MacKade brothers series went on sale at Fictionwise, along with the Stars of Mithra series, so before I knew it I'd bough...more

I actually loved it. I loved the simplicity of the relationship, the hard love between the brothers, the strong back bone of the Heroine, Regan and the small but important references to ghosts.

Rafe MacKade has always been trouble. He went through girls and fights at the same pace growing up but moving away and finding his feet changed him.
When he came back after 10 years he found his home town both changed and the same. His brothers had grown up and found their callings, new shops had opened and...more

I See trouble ahead for me. Yet another series I have fallen in love with. This is the first of four books about the MacKade brothers. First up is Rafe, bad boy looking for a fight Mackade. He leaves home shorty after his mother dies. Ten years later he has returned and one thing has not changed in this small town the gossip. Before he hits the town's city limits word has already spread he has returned. He stops in at the local diner and comes face to face with Regan Jones, who moved to Antietam...more

This book started out really slow for me. I didn't feel any connection between Rafe and Regan but it slowly materialized as the story unfolded.

Here's Rafe, strong, handsome, solid and angry, not really caring about women other than in a carnal sense. He never really made an attempt to romance Regan but he did want to do the wild thing with her. He's the rough and ready type.

Then Regan is stuffed shirt. She dresses like something out of a catalog, always prim and proper and never breaking that im...more

This was my first Nora Roberts novel. I read it for entertainment, but mostly to see how this eminently successful author developed her characters, and how she portrayed romantic scenes. A fairly brief, easy read, this book is the first in a series, each of which tells the story of one of the four MacKade brothers.

The Return of Rafe MacKade focuses on the personal and professional relationship between the grown up bad boy, Rafe MacKade, and Regan Bishop, the beautiful and independent shop owner....more

This is the first book in a quartet that comes highly recommended by Lady Vale (and most of my other friends who have read it have loved it too). And no one writes contemporary romance quite like Nora Roberts. So with these two things in mind, I was sure I was going to love the book/series. Things didn’t happen quite like I planned.

I haven’t read a contemporary romance for some time, and it took a while, but Nora Roberts sucked me into the fabric of her story and made me care about what...more

When I picked up THE RETURN OF RAFE MACKADE whilst browsing in my local library, I had no idea what to expect because I had never read any of Nora Roberts books before. Well, I picked a real winner! It’s a great story full of romance, passion, drama and humour, not to mention those delicious MacKade brothers.

Trouble is rare in the small town of Antietam, Maryland but, whenever there is trouble, the MacKade brothers, Jared, Rafe, Devin and Shane are sure to be in the middle of it. But bad boy of...more

I just looked at the original copyright date on this one. 1995. Yeesh. I was twenty years old the first time I read this. Nora has always had the ability to write families that you can't help but care about and the MacKades are no different.

"He's hooked." Jared grinned and lifted his beer. "And his heart looks so pretty, right there on his sleeve."

It's banter like this that makes me laugh right out loud and what always keeps me coming back for more.

This was a fun re-read. A few places felt rus...more

This my first Nora Roberts, chosen for it's short length and good rating. I can't say I was overwhelmed. The writing was decent. The story was ok. I wasn't crazy about the H or h and their conflict. Her giant issue of not wanting to be like her mother, catering to her man, wore thin. Alright, already, don't be your mom. He was kind of an asshat at times. During an extremely traumatic experience for her, it suddenly became all about his little feelings. Then she recreates a scene in Grease, that...more

Well as a Nora Roberts, this is a short and okay read. It lacks some of her usual character development and glances on some plot development but doesn't follow through. It has typical romance between two individuals who value strength and independence which leads to hot sex and major misunderstandings - again standard for Roberts. It has a few moments when the ghosts in the plantation under restoration seem to impact the living and the secondary story involving spousal abuse gives more depth to...more

Enjoyable romance from Nora Roberts. I almost always am a sucker for a family-related series. This one includes four brothers, the MacKade boys. Gorgeous bad boys - each and every one in his own right. Rafe left town ten years ago. Now he's back and is going to prove something to the town who always thought he would end up in jail or dead. And along comes a beautiful antique dealer and reeks havoc on Rafe's plans. There's a haunted house involved, a lot of humorous dialogue, a wonderful romance,...more

Oh, wow. No matter the "age of material", Nora Roberts simply never disappoints. I don't know how the woman did it/does it/will probably continue doing it, but she always delivers. (I found that the stories by her that didn't really "sing" to me were just read at inopportune moments.)

And this little, ole gem was no different. With just the right amount of romance, suspense, family, and friends, and a haunted house thrown into the mix, this was a winner the moment I picked it up. Wonderful charac...more

I love those series about a little town, everybody with a history known by everyone, LOL.

In this first book we meet Rake McKade, gone away for a long time and just come back. He's a very sweet and caring hero, trying to be hard but he has a very romantic heart. She's sassy and strong and she knows what she wants. So, he capitulated with grace. In the background there's this haunted house, bought by Rafe with ghosts and stories.

A really nice reading. I'm already on book 2.

Maybe this genre isn't the right one for me...first romance book was extremely disappointing. I couldn't care less about the main characters. I was more interested in Rafe's brothers than him. Both Rafe and Reagan made me roll my eyes through the entire book. Maybe one day I'll try another romance and see if it was the genre, or just this particular book that turned me off. But only if it's free through the library! Thank heavens I didn't pay for this one!

I love bad boys. Especially when they 'do good.' Rafe is cranky and arrogant and just a little bit mean. Regan is smooth and stylish and tidy. Neither can believe the other one wants more than just sex, even if it is amazing sex.

While they work on rehabbing a haunted house, they fall in love, neither willing to admit it.

Has two of the greatest 'declaration' scenes...Regan in a tight red mini-skirt at the local bar playing pool, before Rafe drags her out and 'proposes' by reciting Shelley while g...more

This book was part of the Quartet, The MacKade Brothers. The books are short and I read them one right after the other--like one big novel. Several themes run through this series, four devastatingly handsome brothers, rough trouble makers when growing up now productive members of small community, connection to the land and the ghosts that remain from the civil war. Thoroughly satisfying Nora Roberts Romance series.

I had a high expectation when I first read the book. I hoped for a mind-blowing book, but the book was just an okay read to me. Nothing special. Rafe MacKade was very confident and, yes, an absolute alpha male. As for Regan, she was helpful and very likeable. However, nothing wowed me. Probably, I was not very familiar with Nora Robert's writing style since this is the first book I read written by her. I found the story confusing and boring at times. I like book that focused on one or two main c...more

Endearing characters set in the haunted landscape and historically famous town of Antietam. The characters are wonderful and the ghostly presence adds another dimension to a great plot. This is the beginning of one of my favorite Nora Roberts series.

I wanted to read all 4 MacKade books before reviewing. I think this was my favorite story. Rafe is the perfect bad boy for these stories and Regan knows how to handle him. I would have given these books 5 stars, but I thought the tension between the couples was a little too fierce. But than again, these were written in the 90's when the hero was portrayed in that frame more than they are now.
Shelly
Short and sweet. I liked that for once it was the heroine getting the signals crossed and assuming things, putting her foot in her mouth. Even though the hero had to learn some lessons, it was the heroine who made the bigger mistakes, and eventually had to redeem herself. Great job, I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Sarah
Honestly, don't waste your money. Regan is really annoying, the plot is half-developed, and the most interesting part of the book is the haunted house (which, by the way, had the potential for SO MUCH...but just fell flat). I wasn't a fan, but forced myself to finish since I paid for the book.

This book reminded me a little of The Next Always, Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy Book #1, that Nora recently wrote.
Albeit it was shorter and quicker to the point, and of course wasn't exactly the same I just couldn't help thinking about that book and how they do relate to each other.

I love Nora Roberts and I don't know why I didn't read this sooner!!
It was a suggestion and I must say, it was GREAT!!
I loved the book. Simple as that!
Regan and Rafe were just the couple that make you think that real life love-stories do exist! :)
Brown
Rafe, the former bad boy, comes back to Antietum, Maryland, as a reformed bad boy ready to make good. He buys an old supposedly haunted inn and hires Regan to furnish/refurbish it. The two of them are oil and water, but the conflicts are believable and the sparks are sizzling.

Enter formula here...girl meets boy...girl falls in love with boy...girl is too silly to use her big girl words and communicate...girl fights with boy..girl makes up with boy..the live happily ever after...and I enjoyed every Page of it.
