Not a bad story and I liked the main character but with a few problems. I'll possibly check out other works by this author with the same main character and see how he handles him in the other books. The main character is an all-American tough guy soldier but the story seems too PC at times. I had no problem with the character having a sensitive side (in fact to me that is a strength of the story) but the author had me wondering if in future stories he will have the main character eating quiche,...more

Zero Day by David Baldacci is an exciting read. The story is about a man named John Puller who is not only a combat veteran but is also a part of the US Army's Criminal Investigation Division. His father and his brother have also been in the military -- his father is a veteran while his brother is in military prison for treason.

John has been called on to investigate the murder of a military veteran and his family in rural West Virginia. He teams up with local law enforcement to find out what ha...more

John Puller, a combat veteran and military investigator in the U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigative Division, is one of the best. His father was once an Army fighting legend who is fading into end life forgetfulness, but still manages to influence his son. John's his brother is serving a life sentence for treason in a federal military prison (I really want to know more about that and hope it will come in a future book.) John's love of and faithfulness to his family are endearing and create a wonde...more

This book was one which I ended up reading by pure chance. I knew nothing about it before hand and have never read any books featuring Jack Reacher, who many consider this to be a bit of a rip-off towards.

I thought I was reading a murder mystery book with a different kind of detective but as the book continued I realised I was reading more of an action book. I really liked John Puller, the army investigator that joins Sam Cole in leading the investigation. He is brilliant at virtually everythin...more

I’ve not read any David Baldacci books before, and I only started with this one because it sat at the top of the UK charts with a bunch of good reviews and a 20p price tag – but I’m glad I picked it out, and I’m giving it four stars. It would be three and a half, but that isn’t possible.

Zero Day is the first in what I’m sure will be a series starring Jack Rea... sorry, not Jack Reacher, John Puller. Spot what Baldacci did there? Many other reviewers have drawn the comparison between Lee Child’s...more

The only other book by Baldacci I have read was the Innocent which was also good. He writes a good thriller and develops his characters well. This book involves a CID investigator name John Puller. Baldacci created him eerily similar to another character in another author's work who was a former Army MP. The two men could almost be twins except that Puller has a tendency towards guns that the other doesn't tend towards. But this story was still good and well developed. It involves a series of mu...more

I love to read.

I read and read and read and read some more.

I don't know why. I suspect it is because when I graduated high school as a certified moron I decided I didn't really like being stupid. I've been reading almost non-stop since that day. I also like to collect books, which are quickly filling up my house and garage. I like looking at book shelves full of books. I'm weird that way. That may be one of the reasons I haven't yet joined the eBook revolution. I don't know if I could ever enjoy...more

I enjoyed this book because the author did a terrific job at developing characters and describing scenes, locations and actions without getting boring. Army investigator John Puller is assigned to investigate the murders of four family members and can't figure out why a) he is the only one assigned, b) why someone from his unit was assigned, c) why it is considered an unusual murder and d) why he is getting no support from his superiors. Puller does, however, have the full support of the local p...more

Picked this up at the airport on a whim. I typically like Baldacci's books and this one was ok. Other commenter's have remarked on the main character's uncanny similarity to another well-known character. I have never read any of those books (although now I'm going to!) to make that comparison, so that was lost on me. There is a lot of exposition and sort of dumbed-down/white-washed military/law enforcement stuff. I noted in the acknowledgements that Baldacci seemed to do quite a bit of research...more

It's not often I'm compelled to drop a book out of sheer despair, but this is one of them. Well, not literally, since it was in audio format on my phone, and dropping it would have had serious consequences. But at the 54 minute mark of the 57 minute second cd, enough was enough. At a crime scene, Baldacci's shameless clone of Jack Reacher, here called Puller, started explaining in relentless, unpitying and irrelevant detail how to take a flash photograph. This took several chapters, or seemed th...more

“Baldacci needs no introduction” said Daily Mail. Truer lines I haven’t heard.
David Baldacci introduces a new kind of thriller. Special Agent John Puller.
The new heart-racing thriller from the Number One International Bestselling Author John Puller is a former war hero and now the best military investigator in the U.S. Army s Criminal Investigative Division. He is a loner with few possessions by preference, but he has an indomitable spirit and an unstoppable determinat...more

I've read several of David Baldacci's books, and enjoyed them. "Zero Day," however, isn't one of them. Baldacci's main character -- Army investigator John Puller -- is a dull twin of Lee Child's popular protagonist Jack Reacher. It was surprising to see so many similarities to such a well-known character like Reacher. The first time Puller craved coffee, I thought "Reacher." Aside from a strange (I hope coincidental) similarity to a well-known contemporary character, this book is filled with unn...more

And just when I thought I had finished the Jack Reacher series, Lee Childer...David Baldacci writes another Reacher the first Puller novel.

Jack Reacher John Puller is a crackerjack military investigator, who heads out of the DC area to the south, to check out the death of a senior officer in unsavory conditions. Reacher sorries, Puller is a big dude, and he likes to punch people. Also he travels light. And punchy.

I have never read a book by David Baldacci that I didn't like, and Zero Day is no exception. It kept me awake nights and that is one of the things that determine how well I like a book. The situations were borderline unbelievable, but then so are most of Dean Koontz, Stephen King and others ... it doesn't detract from the pleasure of the book.

John Puller is a career military man, a CID investigator with a tough exterior and soft heart and soul. His brother is serving a life sentence for treason...more

An Army Colonel and his family are murdered in their home in a small West Virginia mining town. Army detective Sergeant Puller is sent to investigate. Puller, a distinguished soldier with a chest-full of medals has chosen to stay a sergeant, has a brother in jail for treason, a famous Army general (and now senile) father, and not much of a personal life other than the Army.

The town is being blown apart by mountain-top-removal coal mining and poverty. There's a female police sergeant who becomes...more

I would really rate David Baldacci's latest thriller 31/2 stars. He introduces us to a new lead character John Puller a multiple combat veteran and now a military investigator. John gets assigned to a multiple murder scene in rural West Virginia that involved a murder of a DIA analyst. He is confused as to why he gets a total lack of resources and help. Is this a murder of a DIA office or something else? When he hooks up with the local police officer in charge a woman named Samantha Cole things...more

I really like David Baldacci's books. He is intelligent and provides a suspense filled story with clean dialogue and well written characters. This particular book just didn't grab me. The problem was the acronyms for me. The protagonist is military and a lot of acronyms are used that I don't know. They are defined but I didn't want to keep looking back in the book to be reminded. Like I said, Baldacci is brilliant and he understands a lot of things that I don't having to do with forensics which...more

Nov 22, 2011 Bill rated it 2 of 5 stars  ·  review of another edition Recommends it for: Those that really need to read every Baldacci book
The good guy is perfect and the bad guys are really, really evil. Sometimes David Baldacci gets it just right and sometimes he just falls flat. I am putting Zero Day in the latter category.

John Puller is in the Army's Criminal Investigation Division and is called upon to investigate a murder in a small West Virginia coal mining town. While there, he learns these deaths may have very large implications.

The story really falls short in a number of ways. First, the sheer size and scope of the invest...more

In “Zero Hour” David Baldacci introduces Army CID (Criminal Investigation Division) investigator John Puller, who is tasked with solving the murder of Colonel Matthew Reynolds, an employee of the Defense Intelligence Agency and stationed in the Pentagon, who is murdered in a small house in West Virginia—along with his wife and two teenage kids. Puller is partnered with the local detective, Samantha Cole, as they work to uncover the secrets held in the small West Virginia town—and face a second m...more

So, I was needing "good read" and I got it with this one. Mr. Baldacci remains one of my favorite authors. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this (probably more than usual because I had just finished a rather disappointing novel from another of my favorites, who maybe won't be one of my favorites any more...but I digress).

One nit-picky complaint: I got a bit weary of reading about how someone was fat. Too many fat someones.

That said, the hero of this one was "larger than life", a nearly perfect exam...more

Zero Day by David Baldacci

Baldacci has a new hero, a new ethos and another, never boring cliff hanging, throat grabbing thriller.

John Puller takes over for John Carr without a Camel Club or a gang of cronies. Although Puller is dedicated Army, he runs without a safety net throughout the book. The Army is his life and his passion is it’s Criminal Investigative Division. He is an elite Army cop and he is thrown into a situation involving mass mayhem. Every time he turns around there is another mu...more

oh, what to make of David Baldacci? A capable and entertaining author, much of his recent work has not been up to the standard set by his early books. My personal view is that this came about as he started producing books on a more regular basis, quantity over quality if you like. And now we have "Zero Hour" which is a very hard book to review...
The good news is that this is the best book from the author in some while, a fast paced page turner about an US Military investigator looking into some...more

Zero Day was like bad action movie, so clichéd that my fingers and toes combined aren't enough to count the times I rolled my eyes or laughed at the absurdities in the story. I mean, a hardass super soldier who knows everything about anything and if there is one very precise area of knowledge he's not an expert on, he has a family member that is. Murders, guns, explosions, sweat and muscle - that's the recipe for a good story. Or not.

The book reeked with testosterone and Baldacci clearly wasn't...more

SPOILERS INCLUDED!

Reading this book made me feel elitest and I don't enjoy that feeling. The story wasn't bad by any means. I wanted to know how it ended but getting there was pretty rough.

So the main character is John Puller Jr. Puller is an Army CID Investigator who is the son of America's greatest Soldier and is no slouch himself. Unfortunately for Mr. Baldacci, I am also a Soldier and I found the description of Puller to be almost offensive. He does everything the way the Army trained him to...more

A recommendation from my wife and a chance to try out the Kindle app on my new tablet. Although our tastes in reading are not the same, there are some overlaps and there are many books in her archive that will keep me going for some time yet.

I think that this is my first read by this popular author who would not be my immediate choice. There is no arguing however, with the pace of the book which grabs you in the first few pages - the small town killings.
The story moves quickly and I enjoyed John...more

Zero Day David Baldacci

Baldacci is on my list of "to-read" authors when he has a new book out. He did nor disappoint this time. The past few books have been good, but I was disappointed as I did not believe that they up in the same league as "The Winner" The Winner (Still my favourite by Baldacci).

Baldacci has a new hero, John Pullar. He has similarities to Jack Reacher (ie military with military issues, a big man who can look after himself, no partner and not apt socially - strong silent type) but is not a Rea...more

Puller meet Reacher! David Baldacci brings a new character into his stable of heroes ,John Puller, a war hero who is now one the best military investigators in the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigative Division. Puller follows orders but is clearly his own man when an investigation starts. In Zero Day Puller is sent to investigate the murder of an intellegence officer down South--and, in an highly unusual move, is directed to investigate on his own. Lots of mystery surrounds the deaths of an entire...more

This book gets the 5 star status because it passed the "driveway test." Meaning I was listening to this book in my car and would get so captured by the story I would park the car in the driveway and listen to the book.
I can't wait for more books in the Puller series!
It was a very well written story and captivating from chapter 1 all the way to chapter 97! I couldn't believe all the twists and turns this book provided. It kept going all the way to the end.
I loved Puller's character! He was suc...more
