I was hesitant to rate this book because I'm not sure I really got it. I understand that Peter Verhelst was hailed at Tonguecat's publication as a "Leading New International Writer" (whatever that is). I know the novel has been described as "visionary". And I know it's also been described as surreal (rightly so). My trouble with it is that it also seems hallucinatory in ways that make the narrative, at least for me, very difficult to follow.

I admire this book more than I like it. That is, I understand that Verhelst is pulling off a kind of writerly virtuosity and I applaud appropriately. But I feel about it like I feel about a good bit of contemporary music that appeals to the musical theorist rather than the musical ear. It's possible to feel intellectually compelled, but viscerally unmoved; that's kind of where I end up with Verhelst and his cast of characters. Wie Tongkat openslaat, krijgt een vat vol indrukken en beelden, geuren en kleuren over zich uitgegoten. Het verhaal komt als een hand van het papier los, grijpt je hoofd vast en sleurt je doorheen een verticale tunnel mee naar een literaire onderwereld. Tongkat is een prachtig boek.

Het is een boek dat ik normaal niet direct zou oppikken, het kreeg te veel prijzen van de literaire wereld en deze jagen me angst aan. Te moeilijk, denk ik dan, niets voor mij. Af en toe moet je echter je vooroordelen opzij schuiven en er gewoon aan beginnen. Dan blijkt dit onmogelijke boek net iets voor mij te zijn. Ge kunt eigenlijk niet spreken over deze roman in een andere taal dan Nederlands, en het spijt me erg dat er geen Nederlandstalige versie ervan te vinden is op deze site, maar allez. Deze roman is zo boordevol postmodernisme dat er eigenlijk weinig anders over te zeggen is. Het is mogelijk dat ik persoonlijk voornamelijk ervan heb genoten puur door het feit dat het waarschijnlijk het dichts bij sci-fi/fantasy komt van eendert ander boek dat ik in't Nederlands heb kunnen vinden.
Kind of a strange book to read. If I remeber it correctly you don't get the name of the main character till one of the last chapters. The story is a bit confusing. But it's wonderfully written. It's realistic and unrealistic at the same time.
"Un bordel d'histoires", voici comment décrire ce roman de façon adéquate. Très difficile à comprendre, pas de linéarité dans l'histoire mais langue très poétique.

Verschillende verhalen, op het eerste zicht nogal absurd en onsamenhangend. Zelf is het me nog geen enkele keer gelukt om dit boek volledig uit te lezen. Toch laat het me niet los en ik blijf er steeds opnieuw in beginnen. Je moet je er alleen een beetje doorheen worstelen denk ik...
This book was like a small rodent I was constantly trying to get a hold of. It starts off that the whole world freezes but humans adapt to the cold and their blood turns to ice. Then it just gets crazy.
lyrical, fantastic, and oozing with verhelst's own quirky narrative through some parallel world of extremities with massive nods to mythology and religion.

This book blew me away when i was sixteen. I absolutely loved it.

Truly one of the best books i've ever read. Though I have to admit that Peter Verhelst is a writer you either love or hate. I love.
