Sixteen short stories by some of the most popular YA authors of now full of paranormal goodness, romance, and journeys. It sounds like a good recipe, huh? Not so much. I expected this to be a very good anthology, but it's a middling anthology with only a few good stories, and even those aren't good enough to make me want to keep this book.

Note: This rating is only based on Kelley Armstrong's story "Facing Facts". I haven't read any of the other authors books so there is not really a point to read the short stories, because I probably wouldn't understand them completely.

Since Kelley Armstrong announced this anthology I've wanted to get my hands on it and now that I've finally read it I can say that it more than met my expectations. I'm usually wary of buying anthologies, because they always seem to be a mixed bag - some stories leave you wanting so much more while others leave you wondering why you bothered to read them in the first place. But with such a fantastic line-up of authors, Enthralled was perfection from start to finish. Here's my (non-spoilery!) tak...more
Giovanni’s Farewell by Claudia Gray
It was a sweet, innocent story that melted my heart and kept me wishing for a longer story.
Scenic Route by Carrie Ryan & Red Run by Kami Garcia
These short stories were full of thrilling action-packed scenes and unexpected turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Things About Love by Jackson Pearce

I love short stories. Actually I think that its quite an understatement. I love short stories. I grew up reading Hans Christian Anderson’s tales, Aesop fables and others. The short story vibe is in my blood. Short stories can be about anything and everything and it takes great skill to write a memorable story in just a few words. They need to be interesting from start to finish and it needs to convey the idea effectively.

I decided to pick up this book because of one name on the author list - Kelley Armstrong. I read a handful of other short stories included in this compilation too, but I didn't read all of them. Needless to say, my review would only be relevant for those stories that I did read.

At The Late Night, Double Feature, Picture Show by Jessica Verday

I really liked this story. It had cannibal girl scouts and defanged
vampires wearing feather boas obsessed with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I would definitely like to read more about Jane and her hunter family.

What finally decided me in picking up "Enthralled," a collection of short fantasy stories, is that it was dedicated to smart girls everywhere. I remember being a "smart girl," one who read fantasy novels partly because high school sometimes felt like one endless pep rally. There is a posse of fantasy authors for young adults, and I get the feeling that they felt the same way, and as adults have found each other and bonded together over the Internet.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a huge fan of short stories, so this rating is probably a bit more subjective than I'd like to admit. That being said, when I saw Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr teamed up to edit this, and there were stories from many of my favorite authors in the book, I thought I'd give it a try. I checked it out from the library just in case I didn't like it, and I'm glad I did.

I really liked this anthology of paranormal stories.
I will write my impression on each one of them, and rate them separately, as well as the whole book.
Let me just say before I begin that most of these stories are based on series, or books, previously published by these authors. Of these, I have only read As You Wish by Jackson Pearce and Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr, but I had no trouble enjoying most of the short stories.

This review is for Carrie Ryan's story, Scenic Route!
I can't tell you how much I love Carrie Ryan's writing. If you have read The Forest of Hands and Teeth, you will recognize the setting of her story in Enthralled. This story, however, is about Margie and her younger sister, Sally. These two girls have been devastated by what we can assume was the "zombie apocalypse" that Carrie's Forrest series centers around. Margie and Sally have found refuge in a small abandoned cabin in the mountains, but...more

This is a charmingly packaged anthology published by Harper Collins. Whom, it must be said, is just outstanding in its choices of YA literature and authors. Harper consistently publishes books of the highest quality and content, so with their novels you can almost guarantee a good read. The cover of this (and most of Harper's books) is wonderful and appropriate for the content. What I like about it is the nod to the sophistication of the young adult reader. There's no scared little girl looking...more
I wasn't expecting to like the stories in ENTHRALLED as much as I did. Sure, there are some absolutely fabulous authors who contributed to this anthology (including Kelley Armstrong, Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Sarah Rees Brennan, Rachel Caine, Ally Condie, Kimberly Derting, Kami Garcia, Claudia Gray, Melissa Marr, Jackson Pearce, Mary E. Pearson, Carrie Ryan, Jeri Smith-Ready, Margaret Stohl, Jessica Verday and Rachel Vincent), and I knew I couldn't go wrong -- there was sure to be something I'd like...more
This is an anthology with stories by sixteen "Smart Chicks" authors including Jeri Smith-Redy, Kelley Armstrong, Melissa Marr, Rachel Vincent, and more. The stories run the gamut from sweet to creepy, from funny to serious, but all are well crafted and interesting.

Maybe this wasn't a good choice for me to read because seven of the sixteen stories were from the author's series, most of which I haven't read.
Let me give you the break-down.
Giovanni's Farewell by Claudia Gray
Original short, as far as I could tell. It was cute and could be turned into a successful full length book (or series) should Claudia decide to pursue it.

Scenic Route (Forest of Hands & Teeth series) by Carrie Ryan:
I love this series. One thing I really liked about this story is it is set early on after The Return. Gives us an early look into this universe. The tone of the book is different, more modern feel to it, being it's closer to our present then the other books which I have felt have a more archaic tone, even tho it would be in future but makes sense to me as our present day is so foreign to them. I would think any apocalyptic world w...more

I strongly believe that a short story should stand alone, an entity unto itself. I find few things more annoying than stories that are so immersed in the author's "universe" that they require paragraphs of back-story to understand, or that are clearly a prequel and therefore end up seriously lacking in content. Too many of the stories in this collection suffered from one of these flaws. I understand the market for such stories, but please, tuck them away into a collection of “stories from the xy...more
3.5 stars - some of these stories I enjoyed greatly (especially Red Run, Things About Love, Niederwald and Let's Get This Undead Show on the Road, while others left me lukewarm. I think Merely Mortal and Facing Facts especially suffered from the fact that they were taken out of the context of their existing novel/series 'verses; they seemed to spend most of their allotted space trying to explain backgrounds and established characters and relationships rather than actually telling a story (also,...more
Super fun anthology of paranormal authors' short stories. Very much enjoyed it. Also a nice change of pace from novels. I enjoyed the fun stories the best—several of them were quite funny.

"Things About Love" by Jackson Pearce. It's a story about first kisses and falling it love. Of course I loved it. Juliett the genie is adorable. I'd really like to read more from this world.

So I love anthologies but I hate short stories (most of the time.)
The anthology aspect is what made me want this book – the idea of a collection of some of my favourite authors and some new ones all in one place makes me hyperventilate with excitement. It’s like an all you can eat buffet where you can have a little bit of what you know and love, and then be daring and try something completely new that you’ve always looked at and...more

As with any collection of short stories, I liked some and loved others. I find that usually there is at least one dud in anthologies like this, but surprisingly I can't pinpoint a single story I disliked. Of course there are some I liked more than others, but none at all that were bad.

Enthralled was one the better anthologies I've read. Like all short story collections there are the good, the bad and the blah stories, but Enthralled had more good than I was expecting.

I loved the short stories that I read in this book.
I found Jeri Smith-Ready's, Bridge, to be particularly wonderful. I loved how it was written in a musical stanza form as it is from Logan's POV. Although I am firmly Team Zachary, I couldn't help but feel for Logan. This a must read whether you are Team Zach or Team Logan because if you don't you'll surely be missing out.

4.5 STARS- This is one of the BEST anthologies I have had the pleasure to read. Featuring some of my favorite authors in the genre like Rachel Caine, Carrie Ryan, Ally Condie, Jennifer Lynn Barnes…I knew from the moment I laid eyes on it that I would at least like half of the stories. What I didn’t factor in (and probably should have) was the fact that another couple of authors who continuously put out work I adore were behind the anthology and co-edited it. Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong are...more
Enthralled is a truly beautiful collection of short stories, a veritable buffet of paranormal entities with varying mythologies and gloriously crafted worlds that keeps us flipping the pages with unnatural speed and groaning outwardly upon reaching concluding pages of each individual tale. Some stories are snippets set in the world of an already existing series–granting us quick glimpses through the eyes of a secondary character and gifting us a few extra blissful minutes with some familiar favo...more
I don't normally read all the stories in short story anthologies, and I didn't intend to read all of them here. I just wanted to read Kelley Armstrong's Facing Facts and Rachel Caine's Automatic, but I was between books and was pleasantly surprised. This is a great way to introduce authors. I am definitely going to look up some of their books. Aside from the above, my favourite stories were Mary E Pearson's Gargouille (so romantic, but not cheesy); Scenic Route by Carrie Ryan (never thought I'd...more
Usually, I am not a big fan of short stories. Authors seem to feel that they must try to be excessively clever, mysterious, or symbolic to make up for the short nature of the stories that they have written. I ,in general, been thoroughly disappointed with every short story collection that I've ever picked up, so I was rather skeptical when my sister insisted I read this book - even though it had stories written by a bunch of authors that we love.
