Sixteen short stories by some of the most popular YA authors of now full of paranormal goodness, romance, and journeys. It sounds like a good recipe, huh? Not so much. Note: This rating is only based on Kelley Armstrong's story "Facing Facts". I haven't read any of the other authors books so there is not really a point to read the short stories, because I probably wouldn't understand them completely.

Since Kelley Armstrong announced this anthology I've wanted to get my hands on it and now that I've finally read it I can say that it more than met my expectations. I love short stories. Actually I think that its quite an understatement. I love short stories. I grew up reading Hans Christian Anderson’s tales, Aesop fables and others. The short story vibe is in my blood. Short stories can be about anything and everything and it takes great skill to write a memorable story in just a few words. They need to be interesting from start to finish and it needs to convey the idea effectively.

I decided to pick up this book because of one name on the author list - Kelley Armstrong. I read a handful of other short stories included in this compilation too, but I didn't read all of them. Needless to say, my review would only be relevant for those stories that I did read.

What finally decided me in picking up "Enthralled," a collection of short fantasy stories, is that it was dedicated to smart girls everywhere. I remember being a "smart girl," one who read fantasy novels partly because high school sometimes felt like one endless pep rally. There is a posse of fantasy authors for young adults, and I get the feeling that they felt the same way, and as adults have found each other and bonded together over the Internet.

I remember being a "smart girl," one who read fantasy novels partly because high school sometimes felt like one endless pep rally. There is a posse of fantasy authors for young adults, and I get the feeling that they felt the same way, and as adults have found each other and bonded together over the Internet.

"Enthralled" is a respectable collection. I really liked the ideas of some of the stories, like "Red Run," about a girl who drives down a haunted road in the middle of the night to catch a ghost. Or "Let's Get This Undead Show on the Road," about a teenage vampire who becomes the leader of a boy band, only to have to put up with his eccentric bandmates, who make him realize how un-human he is.

Both were over-written, though, and started to drag, even as a short story.

I liked Kelly Armstrong's story about characters from a series she has written before, and her experience as a prolific author definitely came through.

Carrie Ryan also delivered what is to be expected from her, a dark story of zombie apocalypse. I want to grab the heroines of her stories and say, "Look! Look who has written your story. Do not trust those people, especially not that guy, because he is going to betray you!"

My two favorite stories were "Bridge" and "At the Late Night, Double Feature, Picture Show."

"Bridge" was told in verse form, which moved it along quickly, while still making the characters interesting. It was quite a feat, because it had to explain the mechanics of a world where children see ghosts, one that is explained in a series of books by the same author.

"Late Night" was just as silly as it sounds. There are cannibal Girl Scouts and vampires on their way for a showing of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

What hooked me in, though, was the main character. She's grown up in a family who hunts deadly supernatural creatures. She's also the only one without any special powers, which means that she has spent her life as "the bait." In the story, she is trying to prove that she can be a bad-ass hunter, too. Things go terribly wrong, of course.

Like in any collection, there are stories that I completely did not get, like "Gargouille," but that's the great thing about collections -- you can move onto the next story, and a new possibility.(less)

I checked it out from the library just in case I didn't like it, and I'm glad I did.

However, I know that writing a short story is a bit different, and sometimes more difficult, than writing a novel. So it's not like I'm judging their writing abilities based on these stories.

The one bright spot in the book was Kelley Armstrong's short story, "Facing Facts." That story grabbed me and didn't let me go until the end. My only complaint was that it ended too soon. Kelley Armstrong is my favorite author, though, so I'd probably say the same thing if she'd written a book of limericks. Basically, to me, anything Armstrong writes is golden.

Armstrong's story is set in the world of the Darkest Powers series, and it deals with Chloe, Derek, Simon, and Tori. I love that series and these characters, and this adventure was incredibly suspenseful. She really had me convinced one thing happened when something else had happened. Armstrong has an amazing way of doing that, though. She always keeps me on the edge of my seat.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to you if you enjoy short stories because then you'd probably like more of the stories than I did. If you're not the world's biggest fan of short stories, but you like the authors, then check the book out from the library first.

I really liked this anthology of paranormal stories.
I will write my impression on each one of them, and rate them separately, as well as the whole book.
Let me just say before I begin that most of these stories are based on series, or books, previously published by these authors. Of these, I have only read As You Wish by Jackson Pearce and Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr, but I had no trouble enjoying most of the short stories.

This is a charmingly packaged anthology published by Harper Collins. Whom, it must be said, is just outstanding in its choices of YA literature and authors. There's just something about urban legends that always catches my interest. I love them. Can't get enough. And Garcia strikes all the right chords with this hitchhiker ghost story.

LET'S GET THIS UNDEAD SHOW ON THE ROAD by Sarah Rees Brennan

Christian's a vampire rock star, living the life. Well, not really. His bandmates don't really like him, he doesn't like the spotlight, his family kicked him out, and he doesn't even like being a vamp all that much. But when he and his mates are kidnapped, all that changes.

Usually these days, I roll my eyes at vampire stories (too much! Dear god, too many!) but this one made me laugh. I enjoyed all the characters and the writing was fabulous!

THE THIRD KIND by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

When Kissy says they have to go somewhere, she means it. And, being a good sister, Jess goes. After all, her sister's never been wrong, especially when her eyes get all green and glowy. But the trip to San Antonio is more adventure than Jess bargained for.

I'm a JLB fangirl; her Raised By Wolves series is fantastic. This short story doesn't disappoint and leaves me wondering -- is she planning on using this story as a jumping-off point for a new series? Because it would totally rock! Jess and Kissy are a great team, and I love the go-go-girl power of the two of them.(less)

I find few things more annoying than stories that are so immersed in the author's "universe" that they require paragraphs of back-story to understand, or that are clearly a prequel and therefore end up seriously lacking in content. As with any collection of short stories, I liked some and loved others. I find that usually there is at least one dud in anthologies like this, but surprisingly I can't pinpoint a single story I disliked. Of course there are some I liked more than others, but none at all that were bad.

Enthralled was one the better anthologies I've read. Like all short story collections there are the good, the bad and the blah stories, but Enthralled had more good than I was expecting.

Every story in Enthralled, as the summary states, takes the characters and readers on a journey of some kind. Whether it's a journey of survival, love, hope, forgiveness, or any number of other things; every story, some more than others, will leave it's mark.

I loved the short stories that I read in this book.

I found Jeri Smith-Ready's, Bridge, to be particularly wonderful. I loved how it was written in a musical stanza form as it is from Logan's POV. Although I am firmly Team Zachary, I couldn't help but feel for Logan. This a must read whether you are Team Zach or Team Logan because if you don't you'll surely be missing out.

Some stories are snippets set in the world of an already existing series–granting us quick glimpses through the eyes of a secondary character and gifting us a few extra blissful minutes with some familiar favo...more Enthralled is a truly beautiful collection of short stories, a veritable buffet of paranormal entities with varying mythologies and gloriously crafted worlds that keeps us flipping the pages with unnatural speed and groaning outwardly upon reaching concluding pages of each individual tale. Some stories are snippets set in the world of an already existing series–granting us quick glimpses through the eyes of a secondary character and gifting us a few extra blissful minutes with some familiar favorites. Other tales are completely new, many of them feeling complex and nuanced despite the short page length, leaving us lingering on the last page wishing and hoping the author might decide to make the short we’ve just read a prequel to a new full-length supernatural series.

PERSONAL FAVORITES
Red Run by Kami Garcia
At a depressingly short 20 pages, Red Run gives us a quick, dark ghost story that proves with potentially disastrous consequences how things are not always as they seem. Ms Garcia manages to craft characters who come to life for those brief moments we spend with them, creating a complete story that more than satisfies our need for characters who elicit an emotional response as well as a world we can see clearly in our minds despite not having chapters upon chapters establishing and describing every detail for us.

Bridge by Jeri Smith-Ready
Perhaps my favorite of them all, Bridge is written in verse and returns us to the world of Shade and Shift, allowing us all-too briefly into the mind of Logan after he’s been a ghost for 233 days. While those who aren’t familiar with the series may not find this contribution to the anthology as poignant and moving as those who are familiar every detail of Logan’s history and his time with Aura, Ms. Smith-Ready still does a fantastic job of summarizing events to create a context for Logan’s need to speak with older brother Michael. Logan is his typical self, managing to be incredibly self-centered and frankly a bit of an asshole (his own words), but, as with the novels themselves, there are moments where he becomes serious and genuine, and he plays the strings of our hearts with the same consummate skill he did his guitar in life.

Skin Contact by Kimberly Derting
One of the darkest stories in the anthology, Skin Contact details the tragic past of Rafe, a character we meet in the second installment of her Body Finder series but about whom we know very little. In this tale she provides us an unobstructed view of the event that shaped the man he's become, shining a rather brutal light on someone we’ve seen previously only in shadow, and illuminating the infliction of emotional scars and irreversible damage on a young man we won’t be able to keep from seeing differently from this point onward.

The Third Kind by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Ms. Barnes’s story is one of the ones that exists outside an already created world, giving us something fresh and new and altogether intriguing. Due to the short length, characters and events are introduced quickly and we literally hit the ground running from the very first page, however, at no point do things seem rushed, and somehow Ms. Barnes manages to make us feel as though we know both Jess and Kissy on a far deeper level than we might have believed possible given our initial meeting just pages before. The end of this tale is actually a beginning–though not in a frustrating way–and we can’t help but hope she might add Jess and Kissy to her list of works in progress so that we may continue on in a world with characters who left an impression almost instantaneously.

I don't normally read all the stories in short story anthologies, and I didn't intend to read all of them here. I just wanted to read Kelley Armstrong's Facing Facts and Rachel Caine's Automatic, but I was between books and was pleasantly surprised. This is a great way to introduce authors. I am definitely going to look up some of their books. Usually, I am not a big fan of short stories. Authors seem to feel that they must try to be excessively clever, mysterious, or symbolic to make up for the short nature of the stories that they have written. I ,in general, been thoroughly disappointed with every short story collection that I've ever picked up, so I was rather skeptical when my sister insisted I read this book - even though it had stories written by a bunch of authors that we love.
