by
James Patterson (Goodreads Author)
The world is changing: the government has seized control of every aspect of society, and now, kids are disappearing. The New Order, as it is known, is clearly trying to suppress Life, Li...more

Witch & Wizard takes you on the journey of Whit and Wisty as they fight their way against the New Order and search for their missing parents, discovering their magical powers along the way. “The next Harry Potter” the commercials on TV said about this book. So I bought it thinking I would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series. How I was horribly deceived. I wanted to like this book. I really did. Unfortunately, there were just so many faults with this book that I actually...more
My thoughts:
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. I'm so glad I waited to get it from my local library rather than buying it at the book store. If I had spent my own money on it...well, it would have been even a bigger disappointment than it was.
I'm a big fan of James Patterson's adult books. I LOVE the Alex Cross series. I started getting a bit disenchanted after reading The Beach House, one of the first books he co-authored. The next book- I can't even recall the title beca...more

If you are expecting this to be "the next Harry Potter", you will be deeply let down. I saw the ads for this book and had very high hopes that this would be the next series to captivate audiences around the world, gain its own movies, and achieve its own fansites. I honestly don't think it will even get close.
The plot of this story had great potential, but the way it was executed made it hard for me to enjoy this book. I felt as though it was trying to be HP so much that it...more

Patterson paints a detailed picture of America taken over by a totalitarian dictator who calls himself "The One Who is The One" with this novel. It was really easy to connect to the characters, and this book makes the reader re-evaluate his or her appreciation for art - whether it is visual, literary, musical, or magical. The ending was a bit of a disappointment, but this was such a good book (for the most part) that I blew through it in one day. I also enjoyed making the connection...more
I've never really been a big fan of James Patterson. After Reading "Angel Experiment" and "Daniel X" I had pretty much given up on this guy. Although, I had heard some amazing things about his new book "Witch & Wizard" so I thought 'What the heck' and so I picked it up and read it. BLEH!!! I honestly cannot stand Patterson's writing style. The dialogue that his characters use is just so unrealistic, lamely sarcastic and just overall annoying. On top of that, I've ne...more
I rarely refuse to continue reading a book I have started, but I just refused to finish this one...I was very interested in reading this book after seeing it described as being a new series for Harry Potter fans...which, as it turns out, is extremely misleading!! I think there were good ideas for a storyline behind this book, but the writing was so lacking (no detail, lacking any emotion, poor character development, etc.) that I just had to give up on the book completely...it's too bad, because ...more
This book had me laughing right from the start and not because of anything James Patterson had written. No, not at all. My local library, bless them, has a tendency to mis-classify book genres and had placed this book in the Thriller section, along with some of Patterson's other Thriller style books. In the front, the library had stuck their little comment sheet, a place where people can mark a book when they have read it. Old school, I know. And, here is where the laughter began.

I thoroughly enjoyed James Patterson's first few books of his Maximum Ride trilogy - his style of writing is one I don't admire, but the plot and characters made up for it. In this case, however, I feel like the weak writing, somewhat flat characters, and just plain weird plot mix together to form one giant mess of a book.
Where Patterson Made His Mistakes:

I don't know whats worse- this book, or the fact that I read it.
I hated practically everything about this novel. The characters were so off; Whit and Whisty were too close of names anyway, and it just became confusing. Switching between the two characters didn't have the desired effect I know Patterson had been going for. I found the two annoying.
Also, I felt it was too scatered. There wasn't enough information about what was happening at that moment, it changed too quickly.

I was expecting a lot from this book when I first picked it up. And it wasn't bad. It just wasn't up to the expectations I had had for Patterson here.
The premise was good, the story itself okay. I mean, they spent like 150 pages just being taken to prison. And then like 100 attacking a prison. So there it seemed a bit slow. Nothing much really happened. I could probably summarize the book in a few sentences.

Terrible.
Everything about this book was cliche and annoying: the characters, the dialogue, the plot...Nothing was well developed at all. It was just a big fat mess. When J.P. tried to be funny, I found it irritating, when he tried to be clever, I found it stupid, and when he tried to be original, I found it sadly the opposite.
I was very, very disappointed in J.P., especially since this is the first book I've read by him. Not a great first impression, sorry to say. I know ...more

This book is about these two kids Whit, and Wisty that are taken away from their home in the middle of the night and accused of being a witch and a wizard. Its all because of the New Order thats run by this man called The One Who Is The One, who is trying to rid the world of all magic. I think that ANYONE can read this book and still love it! It pulled me in from the first chapter. It is defenintley a page-turner!:)
REVIEW
I went into this book with no real expectations. I have only read one other James Patterson book, and I had not read any reviews. All I had to go by was the book’s summary (and cool big flaming “W” cover) and it really hooked me.
The New Order was nothing short of pure evil. It set the tone for how utterly depressing life was for the kids in the story. My gosh it would be awful if this were all true.
The main characters, brother and sister duo Whit and Wisty, got a real surprise when t...more
Our society seems to thrill over this type of literature lately. We all seem to get on a bit of an emotional high from reading books, like this one, that explore the ugly, sick, sad, and disgusting things that come from a world with a corrupted government. (Anyone the least bit disturbed by this?) I have read a ton of dystopian fiction lately and this book, Witch and Wizard by James Patterson is not a whole lot different from some of the other young adult dystopian fiction books I have read, ex...more
THIS BOOK WAS AWFUL.
I was really, really sick when I read this book. I mean, I couldn't get out of bed or I'd fall over puking sick. And the only source of entertainment was this book. When I got bored, I would have to FORCE myself to actually pick it up.
One thing wrong with this book is that there were two authors, James Patterson and Gabriella Something-French-That-I-Can't-Remember, who had completely different writing styles. I felt that at times, moments were either too zo...more

I think for a middle school student who hasn't quite figured out what really good writing looks like, this would be a decent little book to read. Don't get me wrong, the book was okay, and I would recommend it to my middle school students. I'll probably even read the other books in the series (maybe) so I can answer questions or talk about these books with students who show any interest.

The Witch and Wizard was a thrilling book with many twists and turns. In the beggining you meet two children, Whit and Whisty. Throughout the book you will follow them through the journey of a lifetime.
In the beggining it starts like a wildfire. Often books slowly reach the climax, in this it hits you right in the face! You read the first sentence and are completley entranced by what you asume is going to happen, but truely don't have one clue. You slowly find out everything tha...more

How would you feel if you found out your parents were keeping a secret from you? what about getting taken away in the night and being accused of something your sure your not? Or to be told everything you had in life was banned from you? This is a story about two kids whit and wisty allgood.
I liked in the story Witch & Wizard that the author was, once again very creative with his writing. The description although was quite vague. I also felt like there was too much details that wasn't...more

This is the first book in a series to come about Wisty and Whit Allgood discovering that they are a witch and a wizard, the prophecies surrounding them, and the dangerous challenges they must face together. When the brother and sister are arrested in the middle of the night, in their home, you feel like you have come in on the middle of a story, and not from the start. I kind of felt like I may be missing something. Both Wisty and Whit accept what they are and what they can do a lot easier th...more
I'm a fan of James Patterson, I won't deny that. As a teacher, it's Patterson who can lure in kids who hate to read. His very short chapters and constantly "in motion" stories have the ability to capture any readers attention.
But, and yes, here comes the but... I'm surprised that James Patterson has resorted to allowing others to write his books and then put his name on them. Witch and Wizard echoes Patterson's writing with short chapters, but the story? Well it's clear ...more

No es tan malo. Creo.

This probably deserves 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed it. It is a creative story about a brother and sister who are taken from their home in the middle of the night and imprisoned. They only gradually discover they have magical powers. It was nice to have a brother and sister who really like each other and really help each other. The One Who Is the One is scary and a good villian. I think the ending was okay, certainly it doesn't completely end--there are other books in the series. I hate it when t...more
For those of you who liked this book, I pity you. You obviously don't know what good writing is.
Wait, that was kind of mean...
But seriously. This. Book. Was. AWFUL.
Yes, I did like Maximum Ride. (Fang kicks butt.) So my sister read this book, thought it was great, handed it to me to read. (Sorry. My sister is deprived.) Anyways, started. From the first CHAPTER, I wanted to slam the book (if not the book my head) against the wall.

Witch and Wizard by James Patterson was amazing. I am not sure why so many people didn't like it. Witch and Wizard isn't a Harry Potter it is it's own book. I don't read books by judging/comparing them to other books. Harry Potter is just different from Witch and Wizard. I love Harry Potter very much and I love Witch and Wizard very much. They just aren't the same. In one they are at a school and in the other they are in a prison. I thought that sometimes the characters could be a little wha...more
As an adult reader who loves well-written young adult fantasy novels, I found Witch and Wizard devoid of any original thought. It is trite and uninteresting, filled with cookie-cutter characters and tired clichés. I literally rolled my eyes at the first mention of “The Prophecy,” and heard myself scoff aloud a number of times (for example, when the phrase “tricks are for kids” was shortly followed by “gone with the wind” and then by “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”). It’s repetitive an...more
