Overall I loved Alex, the main character. But there was several points where I wanted to pull my hair out or take her by the shoulders and shake the living bejeebers out of her! Usually these moments of frustration came when she was being a some what typical teen, I actually had to stop and remind myself that this book is not actually geared towards someone my age. The author, Shay Fabbro, wrote Alex so well that I can easily see her and imagine that she is the girl down the hall, the teen clerk...more Overall I loved Alex, the main character. The author, Shay Fabbro, wrote Alex so well that I can easily see her and imagine that she is the girl down the hall, the teen clerk at the mall and more. She seems so real.

As Alex comes into contact with the reflections, you can feel her nervousness ... and excitement. History comes alive in this book people (at least history as the book details), the words travel across the page and you just want to chase them to find out what happens next.After her first awkward trip, I was rooting for her 100%. After her second trip, it dawned on me why... her story had bits of two favorites of mine - Alice in Wonderland and Quantum Leap. Both of which involve travelers trying to set or keep their worlds straight ... just like Alex, in fact just like many teenagers theses day if we are being realistic.

While I liked the beginning of the story as it was laid out - I would have liked to see the short chapter that introduces the character "Drifter" placed in a "prologue". While I related to Alex well enough and was already on pins and needles - placing the short introduction of "Drifter" at the beginning as an prologue would have had my hackles up from the start and created a more instant connection to Alex, the main character and obvious heroine of the novel. Not a grip, just something that would have made me fall in love with the story much faster than I did.

That said, the ending... the ending... oh my bob, the ENDING! I love and hate cliffhangers, seriously its a constant internal struggle when I read a book or watch a TV show that ends with a cliffhanger - if done correctly, part of me wants to jump up and applaud while simultaneously seething with hatred for being forced to wait to find out what comes next. Shay Fabbro, my dear friend, has crafted an ending that has you not realizing you are falling off the cliff until you are half-way to smacking into the reality that the story is over... for now.(less)

This book is a Young Adult book, but it has kind of a cool premise so I wanted to see how this book was going to turn out. Basically the main character Alex is thrown into a situation that probably a lot of teens are faced with these days, a family that has been broken a part, and the aftermath of coping with how to deal with your life suddenly changing in more ways than one.

This book is a Young Adult book, but it has kind of a cool premise so I wanted to see how this book was going to turn out. Basically the main character Alex is thrown into a situation that probably a lot of teens are faced with these days, a family that has been broken a part, and the aftermath of coping with how to deal with your life suddenly changing in more ways than one.

I have to compliment Shay Fabbro in being able to write a realistic teen in this book. There were a lot of moments when I was getting annoyed a little bit with the way that Alex was acting, but it's authentic, when I was a teenager I either knew girls who acted like her or even acted a bit like her myself.

I think Alex as a character is easy for people to relate to. Like I said a lot of people have had to deal with having your parents split up and the resulting fall out that can lead to school changes and moving from the only home you have ever really known. But Alex also has good friends, and problems with bullies at school. She is easily likable because you know she has been dealt a bit of a bad hand, but even though she has been dealt a bad hand she still keeps going, she really learns to work through the hard times.

Then of course the "magical" element of the book is the mirror that Alex discovers that can transport her to another time. It's kind of a cool concept, one seen in a few different tv shows. But the reason why all those tv shows work is the same reason why this book works. Each different show/book has their own take on how the "time travel" works and the goals of it. Plus in a book form and specifically geared to young adults, it gives you a really interesting perspective to work with.

I think another reason why this book works with the time travel element is because Alex is just a normal girl, but she is also a smart girl. It's known from early on that she is a history buff, and if anyone would be suited for time travel it's her. I think all history lovers wish at one time or another you could go back in time and experience different times in history just for a little while.

Overall, I think this book is a really good young adult book, and I would recommend it to young adult readers. It did take a little while to pick up in the beginning, but the plot was good and the pace was good after the beginning. I will say this book does read like a young adult, so if you don't like young adult this book is not for you, but if you do then you could check out this book. (less)

Dangerous Reflections has a storyline that is really unique. I always like when I read something that's new to me.

Alex is transitioning to a new school after her dad walks out on her and her mom. She is overwhelmed by the changes taking place as she goes to a new school and tries to fit in. Cue the entrance of a hot new crush, who really gets her blood pumping, the evil popular girl hell bent on humiliating her, who, oh yeah, also happens to be dating said crush and you've got 4 yrs of high school anxiety doled out in the span of months. Then, as if simply seeing strange people isn't enough to freak her out, she's being painfully transported back in time against her will.

I don't know if there's any other person better suited to save the day than Alex. She's a smart cookie with great instincts. It would be one thing if Alex could travel through time, walk around and appreciate or experience things she's only read about in her history books (she's a big history buff after all), but no, her situation won't be that simple. She's being sent back for a purpose. And the stakes are high. Like she doesn't have enough to deal with as it is.

It's heartbreaking to witness her experience the emotions and hurt that come with the realization that a parent has abandoned you. It's not like she and her father, Gary, were close to begin with. But, to a child it should feel like a given that your parents love you and consider your welfare above theirs, no matter what happens in their lives. She doesn't necessarily want anything to do with him, but that doesn't mean the desire to feel wanted isn't there.

It took me a few chapters to get into this book, when I did, I loved it. Shay Fabbro perfectly captures the voice of a teenager. I laughed quite a bit as Alex has bouts of ungratefulness, tantrums, sulking, outbursts, thinking she knows it all, all while struggling not to wear all her emotions on her sleeve. Sounds familiar, right? Like maybe every emotionally unstable, sullen teenager out there. But, Alex isn't a bad kid. On the contrary, she's very well-rounded. Especially considering the circumstances of her upbringing. She's an excellent student, makes friends easily, holds down a job and shows a great deal of growth and maturity as the story develops. I really enjoyed her inner dialogue and she tries to juggle being a supportive daughter, a good friend, a dedicated student and a time traveler/hero.

What I liked best about this book is that although Alex can travel back in time, her REAL super power is her intellect and her willingness to follow her instincts. I rally behind any book that empowers girls to wield their intelligence instead of their looks. I hated for the book to end with no sequel at the ready (patience isn't my greatest virtue...the sequel is due to be released at the end of this month, for goodness sakes!), especially with the terrific cliffhanger we're left with. I would recommend this book series to everyone Jr. High age and up.

I was given this book by the author which I was excited to get it because if not I was going to buy it because it was right up my ally of something I would read.Now about the book.....

Dangerous Reflections was a great YA novel. It was about Alex, the main character, time traveling when she sometimes looked in a mirror. The plot was very well written. There were no plot holes or spelling errors. My favorite thing about the book was even though it was a work of fiction, the reader can still learn something about history. I have to be honest and tell you... I wasn't quite getting into this book from the beginning. The author sets up the story in a way that is all to familiar to many of us. As Alex (Alexis) our heroine finds here way in her new life the reason for the story unfolded and that grabbed my attention. I think it's a secret dream of many history enthusiasts to be able to experience historical events and time periods for themselves, but not actually be trapped in those realms forever. Alexis Davenport, our plucky young heroine, gets to experience a whole lot of things throughout this book, but I think some of those experiences she'd rather leave behind.

Alexis Davenport, our plucky young heroine, gets to experience a whole lot of things throughout this book, but I think some of those experiences she'd rather leave behind.

This book takes some well-traveled paths in YA stories- having to start at a new school at a critical time, dealing with the awkwardness of not knowing anyone, realizing parents and other adults have the capability to be tremendously disappointing, and overlays them with new ideas. Alexis slips back and forth into the past and isn't able to control these episodes; she has to fend for herself in these new periods and try to figure out just what the heck is going on.

Alexis figures out that these sojourns take place after she catches the reflection of a mysterious girl in a mirror instead of her own; when she confides these happenings to her friend, Jennifer, the possibility of her experiencing a series of past lives is raised, and they can't rule it out.

For me, the most resonant part of the book wasn't necessary the adventure plot, which was fine, don't get me wrong, but the authenticity of the emotions that Alexis feels and the way those are communicated to the reader. We feel her pain as she tries to process how huge of a loser her dad is, we feel her embarrassment as she tries to fit in in her new school and tries to deal with her monster crush, and we feel the wheels in her head turning as she tries to puzzle out just what is up with the strange reflection in the mirror. This element more than any other really grabbed me and held my interest in the story.

We also get to see Alexis develop her sense of self throughout the story, which is nice as well. She starts moving from a sort of rough outline of an individual into a unique person, especially through her involvement in theater, and it was nice to see her embracing and liking herself and not worrying so much if other people did.

While this story doesn't necessarily break any new ground, it accomplishes what it sets out to do (tell a good adventure story) with likeable characters and interesting historical details. I had a lot of fun reading it.

Overall Grade: B+(less)

This book sucked me in as though I were Alex and the book was my mirror! I absolutely love this great story about a high school freshman named Alex who, due to her parents separating, has to move away from her home and friends and live with an aunt she barely knows with her mom. When I first read the synopsis for Dangerous Reflections I was very intrigued. The story looked unique, and I was excited to get a copy from the author to read. I was not disappointed! Dangerous Reflections is a very fun and original read, and I am excited for book two in the series.
