"God made you so he could love you" (p. 24), Warren tells us, and the purpose that drives our lives should be loving God in return. "Worship is as natural as eating or breathing. If we fail to worship God, we always find a substitute, even if it ends up being ourselves. The reason God made us with this desire is that he desires worshipers!" (p. 64)

This worldview quickly becomes incoherent. Consider these two statements, made side-by-side: "You are free to choos...more

I bypassed this book for a long time, naturally resistant to anything that smacks of "fad," however well-intentioned. My thinking tends to be that anything with such mass appeal tends to be watered down in order to appeal to the greatest number. Then again, Christianity and its manual for life, the Bible, have had more mass appeal than just about anything one could name in human history. And so, at last, I made this book a part of my personal spiritual journey and exploration.

At its best, this book is filled with porous theology that is modestly helpful to someone who has no knowledge of Christianity whatsoever. At its worst, Warren mangles scripture to fit his own agenda (40 days to find purpose in your life) and promotes personal experience over the truth found in scripture.

This book is symptomatic of feel-good consumerized Christianity so prevalent in America today. Finding your purpose in life takes far longer than 40 days and it cannot be easily summarized (...more

The Purpose Driven Life is a book for people wanting to learn more about what it means to truly live out the Christian life, not as a spectator, but as a participant. It's designed to take the reader through a 40-day journey towards discovering his or her purpose in this world, as well as the world to come. It is a good companion book to the Bible, in that it's a practical guide to the Bible's applications. The Purpose Driven Life is like a compass, whereas the Bible is the map.

Our life now here on earth is the warm-up act - the
dress rehearsal. God wants us to practice what we will
do forever in eternity. We were made by God and for God, and until you figure that out, life isn't going to make sense. Life is a series of problems: Either we are in one
now, we're just coming out of one, or we're getting ready to go into another one.

The reason for this is that God is more interested in
our character than our comfort. God is more interested in making our life hol...more

Best life journey book ever.
Gak berlebihan rasanya kalo nih buku jadi bacaan paling banyak di sharing di komsel-komsel, bahkan di gereja sekalipun. Setiap chapternya (bayangin aja ada 40) 'mengguncang'. mending beli English versionnya, soalnya as ususal, belum menemukan penerjemah yang bisa membuatku mengacungkan two thumbs up. Gak terlalu mahal, kok, kalau dipikir-pikir. 110 ribu yang lebih kecil buku dan tulisannya, dan 145 ribu (atau 160 rb) yang lebih besar, cari aja di ak.sa.ra yang di PI...more

If you haven't heard of this book you have probably been living under a rock somewhere for the last several years. Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Life has obviously influenced millions of people all over the world. So, naturally, a lot of people hold it at arm's length because rarely does God's word unite and excite so many people at once. I admit that there are some verses used (he uses about every version of the Bible he can get his hands on) by various versions that don't seem to sync up well. ...more

There are so many books out there that promise to help you find your path in life, to help you achieve meaning, that it's tough to know which one to read -- and which one will be different than the others.

I've read scores of these types of books, and "The Purpose Driven Life" is different in several ways. First, it offers you a step-by-step plan for creating a sense of meaning in your life. Second, it's based in scripture. Third, it advocates making the church the center of your l...more

I am reading the hard cover copy but I couldn't find it on GoodReads.

I am starting this book today. I am also going to do what it suggests - only read one chapter a day for 40 days. So that means, I will finish this book in a month.

The whole point of the book is to supposedly show you *why* you are on this Earth.

I've been doing a lot of soul-searching lately & I am hoping to gain some knowledge from reading this book.

"Self-help books often suggest that you try to disco...more

I finished Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life, which asks the question What on Earth am I here for? It also notes on the jacket that it has sold 25 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling non-fiction hardback book in history, making me probably about the last person on the planet to read it.

The book is set up to be read over a period of 40 days and since I stared reading it in January, I clearly didn't do this, but did find the book to be worth the read. Warren addresses placing Go...more

I have to give this book FIVE stars. I bought a book, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren in about two years ago after my remarkable time in Costa Rica. This book is strongly recommended for a reader to find a partner. This book is very straightforward truth about God and life purpose. That is why readers are encouraged to find more than one person to have a support system during their journey of reading PDL. Two are better than one. On the day of August 14, I found my partner, my mommy. We b...more

This book is an easy read and you want more.
It captures my soul in the rich truth of importance and place in Life's arena. It is a gentle re-affirming work that expresses "purpose" and establishes personal "worth", from God's heart to/for human beings.
It's personal. It's transforming; renewing the mind, healing and strengthening a broken soul.

I enjoy searching various translations and paraphrases of scripture and I was liken-the-fact that Rick included this in his ...more

I don't consider this a "self-help" book. I consider it the first step taking me from being a strictly "religious" Christian who attended mass every Sunday and then went on my way, to someone who wanted to KNOW God and why I'm here. It was a very straightforward, non-preachy, almost collegiate view of what it means to live a life of faith and how in everything we do, from washing the dishes to loving our neighbor and helping anyone in need (that means ANYONE), should be done...more

A friend gave me this book when I was going through a difficult time in my life and it was more than a great gift. I felt the book was very eye-opening without being overly religious. You can be a Christian and follow what the book is saying and get a very deep meaning out of it if you allow yourself to. I read it at the right time and was very open to what it had to say and therefore feel that it changed me. I still think back to that time being one of the catalysts for where I am at today ...more

He's a great marketer: his books are read as part of small groups in churches of almost every denomination. I'm glad this book seems to have positively affected so many people, but, if I am honest, I must admit that I myself was unable to read it in its entirety. To me, it seemed somewhat typical of the simplified, talk-down-to-you, kill-the-mystery, commercialized Christian devotional. But, then again, I've never been a fan of exclamation marks! I'm still waiting for the Purpose Driven board ga...more

This book got alot of press when it first came out but I wasn't at a time in my life when I wanted to read it. However, months later it still seems to be a popular book and now that I've read it, I can understand why.

Broken into forty chapters to be read one per day, The Purpose Driven Life gives an outline of some basic thoughts used in the Christian faith. It talks mainly of our purpose on earth in context of God's plan. It offers thoughts on how to fulfill that plan and that purpose as w...more

I suppose this book can be genuinely helpful to some people (Scott Peterson, Brian Nichols, Fidel Castro, for example have all apparently benefited from this book), but it was uninteresting to me from the get-go. I went into it with an open mind, and hoped to gain some spiritual insight from it. However, when the book immediately recommended The Purpose-Driving Journal, The Purpose-Driven Calendar, Daily Inspiration for the Purpose-Driven Life, not to mention The Purpose Driven Life DVD Study Gu...more

This was given to me by someone who was later tried for securities fraud. Ironic, no? Anyway, this book has nothing to offer you unless you have already accepted Jesus as your savior. All others need not apply. Even with that aside, this book seems pretty juvenile. Maybe being raised Catholic has biased me to expect religious leaders to have many years of rigorous theological training before pontificating on life's purpose. My wife and I visited the author's megachurch here in Orang...more

If a person is a professed Christian, I'm sure he or she will find this book to be both insightful and convicting. If a person is not a professed Christian, I imagine that person will find this book confusing and perhaps even ridiculous. (As with, I suspect, any form of faith, if you are on the outside looking in, it's very difficult to understand many aspects of that professed faith. On the other hand, once you are on the inside, that is, having committed yourself to that faith, things become m...more

sometimes there are books that change for you, depending on when you read them. i attempted to get through the 40 days of purpose-driven living two years ago and barely got through the first week before deeming it self-absorbed and elementary and throwing it aside. then i decided to give it another chance, and it honestly seems like a different book. my previous criticisms and annoyances of the book being "self helpy," absorbed in its own role of fostering purposeful living, still s...more
