This review is just for the one short story - The Horror in the Museum -
As always Lovecraft delivers and with only a minimal description of the monsters in his tales manages to chill your blood and spook you. He is the master of the subtle horror. He doesn't need to describe every single detail because often what he leaves unsaid and up to our own imaginations is more horrid than anything he could have shown us. This is one of his Elder Gods mythos and deals with a strange man who w...more

Not recommended for starting Lovecraft readers, but very recommended for people that want the full Cthulhu Mythos background all at once through a story. For example people that want to play the Call of Cthulhu roleplay game, or people that want to know where games like Alone in the Dark and the upcoming The Secret World MMO are based upon.
Apart from being 'a tour through the Mythos', this is the now classical ...more

This was an uneven collection; the majority of the stories collected are mostly written by Lovecraft, and are pleasurable reads, very good in the certain, narrow way Lovecraft works best. The lesser number, where he only slightly edited others' work, is not nearly as much fun. The prose is clunkier and less suspenseful -- less suggestible, to steal a favored word. An exception is the very last tale, The Night Ocean, which is an excellent piece of mood, almost a tone poem. Virtually nothing happe...more
Very strong Lovecraft story that has both a mildly original twist along with a predictable premise. Has more readability than the usual story, which I associate more with his collaborator at the time.
A mix of well-crafted sinister horror and dark fantasy, all in the classic Lovecraftian style. Some tales are fairly hard-going though, so it's probably not the best collection for a Cthulhu Mythos neophyte.
Definitely worth reading for those who want the full scoop on the mythos universe. Many of the stories are of questionable quality, but gems like" the horror at martins beachthe mound" and "the curse of yig" are worth it
This book is a collection of stories which were revised by H. P. Lovecraft. The numerous authors in this book have a wide range of style, despite the same horror feeling as most Lovecraft stories. This book is great for people looking for anything related to Lovecraft. That being said, there were a number of stories in this collection which simply didn't measure up to the Lovecraft standard. Certain tales seemed to drag on forever without any logical point or message even at the end. Other...more
didn't grab my attention right off the bat. first short story was too fantasy for my taste
I mean ... seriously. How could I have lived this much of my life without ever having read H.P. Lovecraft?
Sure, there was repetition in the various stories, and sure some of them obviously have to do with his Cthulhu mythos, which I have not read. Yet.
But the experience of reading these horror stories was so unique ... You're not beat over the head with gore. Instead, the terror sneaks up on you, until you're breathing shallowly and your pulse is racing and you don't ev...more

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.
Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulh...more
