The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is no place for button-downed citizens—unless they’re trying to hide a murder

Sharp-witted Liv Bergen can’t avoid becoming embroiled in murders, it seems. Her family’s hometown of Sturgis, South Dakota, is quickly becoming the Sodom of the Black Hills during the dog days of summer as it hosts the infamous rally of grizzled hard-core motorcycle b

In this second of the series, modern day miner Liv Bergen finds herself in Sturgis during the annual motorcycle rally, and is up to her neck in dead bodies. Sturgis during the rally – you know there have to be really bad biker dudes, and the main ones belong to Lucifer's Lot.

Although I liked In the Belly of Jonah, the first of the series, better, this book was a decent mystery. There was too much backstory in the initial dialogue, and it seemed forced. There were typos and edit

I first discovered the Author Sandra Brannan through Goodreads and had won this book. What caught my attention to this book was the title. When I started to read this book I really got into fast. Liv Bergen, the main character is smart, witty, spunky, and a go-getter. She will stop at nothing to find the killer and to clear her brother's name.

Sandra Brannan did a fabulous job setting up this story. The plot was great and I loved how she ended the story. She writes a heck of a mystery. Throughou

Lot’s Return To Sodom by Sandra Brannan

This book provides more details than you may want to hear about the underbelly of the 1% outlaw motorcycle gangs. A murder and other despicable behavior are offset by the tenacity and courage of the female protagonist.

Liv Bergen is recovering from her encounters with murder in a previous book. I think a smidgen more of back story would be helpful in understanding Liv. Liv’s feelings for her brother Jen overwhelm whatever common sense she might have. Liv is

In this sequel to “In the Belly of Jonah,” Liv is in the last week of her rehabilitation after her encounter with the de Milo killer and has come to stay with her parents in Rapid City, SD. She has arrived just in time for the beginning of the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis – and just in time for murder. Her brother’s girlfriend, Michelle, has been murdered, as has an older man who is a friend of the family. To make matters worse, Michelle’s 14-year-old sister, Char, is missing. Jens, Liv’s ...more

Liv Bergen is recovering after the incident with De Milo in The Belly of Jonah. Liv is taking some time visiting with her family. It is a very busy time. The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is taking place. When Liv’s brother’s girlfriend is found with her head bashed in, Liv’s brother is the number one suspect. Liv receives some help in the form of FBI Agent Streeter. He and Liv worked together before.

Lot’s Return to Sodom is the second Liv Bergen novel. It is not recommended that you start wi

Sandra Brannan is a local SD author. This book take's place in the Black Hills of SD. It was very interesting to see in print the names of familiar places that I frequent.

Liv Bergen has returned to SD after having gone through quite the ordeal in the first book in the series. book #2 picks up right where things left off (I like this in a series). She is not directly involved the murder that takes place, but has family members that are. I like the fact that Liv doesn't listen to what is recommen

I love Sandra Brannan's narrative voice. Smart and down-to-earth, this book pulled me in and made me care about both the characters and the plot from page one. The setting is original - the opposite of Hollywood, though the pages turn as quickly as any mass market book I've read. Very groovy voice in the crime fiction scene.

Liv Bergen has returned to her childhood home to finish her therapy and recovery following her harrowing encounter with the Venus de Milo killer. Sturgis, South Dakota during the annual motorcycle rally isn’t the most restful of places. Liv witnesses a death at the rally and becomes entangled in the murder of Michelle Freeburg, her brother Jens’ fiancée, at his request. Liv is soon up to her neck in trouble again.

Long held dark secrets catch up to Michelle, Jens’ fiancée, culminating in her deat

By the time Lot's Return to Sodom begins, Liv Bergen has almost fully recovered from her ordeal with De Milo. She's looking forward to returning to work and getting on with life when she learns her brother's girlfriend has been murdered, and he's a suspect. He asks Liv to find the killer, and his girlfriend's missing little sister, since she was successful in uncovering murderers before.

As with most amateur detective series, Liv Bergen needs a reason to be involved with the case and her brother

I didn't mind the first mystery in this series too much, but this one was just too bad to bother finishing. Leaving aside strange spelling errors, there just didn't seem to be any discipline to this book. I understand that a decent mystery requires misdirection, whether from potential copycat killers, coverups, or multiple suspects, but the author just seemed too intent at stuffing this novel with too many ideas: A serial killer, a copycat killer, random(?) killings by outlaw bikers, a stalker, ...more

I loved the first book in the Liv Bergen series so I was excited to read the followup "Lot's Return to Sodom." I was not dissapointed! The events of this book take place during the annual Sturgis Bike Rally. I really did not know much about the rally or that area of the country before so I enjoyed learning about both. It was interesting for me to read about the activities of some of the motorcycle gangs. I know from talking to Sandra that she did a lot of research on the gangs to get the events ...more

As I mentioned in my review of Widow’s Might, after reading it, I liked the characters so much that I decided to go back to the beginning of the Liv Bergen series and read the books in order. The first book is In the Belly of Jonah, and immediately after completing it, I started this one, Lot’s Return to Sodom. I am very happy now that I understand all the references in Widow’s Might. What is really intriguing to me also is that Widow’s Might picks up exactly where Lot’s Return to Sodom left off ...more

If you read my review of Brannan's first book, In the Belly of Jonah, you know I wasn't a huge fan, but that all changed with this book. I loved the character development, the story, the details, and how quickly the story moved. I was guessing who the killer would be from the start and was surprised to find myself on the wrong path right up until Liv figures it out. That doesn't happen often.

Brannan's ability to describe events and to misdirect you is astonishing. I felt like I was deep within t

Liv Bergan is just healing from her life threatening experience while nosing in the FBI's investigation of a serial murderer. Her 'day job' is managing a branch of her family's rock quarry. The only good memory of that experience is her blurry memory of the FBI agent who saved her life. Unfortunately she was in and out of consciousness during his visits, and has yet to really meet him.

Now, her hometown of Sturgis, South Dakota is being inundated by loads of motorcycle groups who are coming to th

I received “Lot’s return to Sodom” & “Widow’s Might” as ARC’s (how lucky!) they are 2nd & 3d in the Liv Bergen mystery series. I knew the minute I heard the titles of the books and saw the covers which, by the way I LOVE and the bbb (back book blurb) that I would love this series too, and so I have! I immediately bought the first book in this series “In the Belly of Jonah” read it in a day and started on the other two. All 3 are 5 star books for me, this is a new and favorite series.

Another great Liv Bergen mystery. A little less gore, but definitely left me on my seat trying to figure out who the killer was and the hows and the whys. Again I spent the entire book trying to narrow down my options to find the killer at right towards the end I had two in mind, but the clues sent you a different way. Again the killer was in the book the entire time and didn't come out of left field - love it.

Brannan expertly loops her character Bergen into this next investigation. This book be

I reviewed In the Belly of Jonah by Sandra Branna earlier this year and was really looking forward to reading her second book of the series, Lot’s Return. It was very much a let down and was not as good as the first book in this series. Once again we have Liv Bergen involved in solving the crimes; this time in the area of Sturgis SD near her family’s mining company. Of course with Sturgis there are bikers and the annual raunchy display.

The story line was all over the place and in dire need of e

Following her encounter with a serial killer, Liv Bergen has returned to her family home to recuperate. Her childhood hometown is no safe haven, however, with stalkers, biker gangs, rapists and of course...murderers.

After a local woman is murdered and Liv's brother becomes a suspect, she does everything she can to discover the truth and help him. When FBI Streeter Pierce is brought in to investigate, it looks like he and Liv may finally cross paths.

Will Liv Bergen or Streeter Pierce find the kil

Lot's Return to Sodom picks up a few months after Liv's last mystery, and drops the reader right back into the fray. Liv is slowly recovering from her brush with the De Milo killer. Everyone around her treats her like a frail being, and for a woman like Liv that's the most maddening thing of all. Soon enough though there is another mystery that just begs to be solved. A young woman has been murdered. Her brother is a suspect. Who better to uncover the answers than the feisty Liv herself?

I was gifted this book as an ARC, although, I didn't read in time to be advanced.

This is the second book in the Liv Bergen mystery series. Liv just went through being saved from the clutches of a psychotic serial killer and was in the hospital for over a month dealing with heroin withdrawals that the killer had injected her with.

Liv went home to stay with her parents, to aid in her recovery, when once again, she finds herself in the midst of not one but two or more murders. On

When Michelle Freeburg, girlfriend of Jens Bergen, is found murdered the police think Jens might be a suspect. Liv Bergen, sister of Jens, decided that she should do some investigating to determine who really killed Michelle. Complicating the picture is the disappearance of Michelle’s sister Charlene. The story is set in Sturgis, South Dakota during the summer motorcycle rally.

I found the found the stereotypes of the motorcycle club pointless. Once you get past those the story is fairly intere

So I really liked this one--I liked how the mystery unfolded and then came together with a couple of twists thrown in. I even like the different POVs throughout the story (although I wonder as to why Streeter's chapters aren't first person and also feel that there should be something to make it apparent the narrator is changing). Liv is a wonderful narrator and I did find myself chuckling at some parts. The only thing is and this holds true with the first one is that I feel the stories need to g ...more

This is the second book in the Liv Bergen series, but it doesn't leave you left behind if you haven't read the first. It stands on it's own. It takes place only months after the last murder case, with Liv still going through physical therapy, and staying with her parents. She is told that her brother's girlfriend has been found murdered and he asks her to help him find out what happened, not only to her, but to her little sister who is also missing. While waiting for her brother one day, Liv wit ...more

This book was the 2nd in the series, after In the Belly of Jonah. This was a good read, but I didn't find it as engrossing as the first one. At the beginning, I had a hard time figuring out who all the characters were and how they all fit into the story. I really, really like the Streeter character, but Liv sometimes feels a little too contrived for me. In the first book she was a regular citizen who "helped" the FBI, and became a target but in the second book it was like she was the main invest ...more

Liv Bergen whose family owns a mining company in South Dakota is recovering when her brother Jens' girlfriend Michelle is found murdered. Since Jens is a suspect he asks Liv to help him find Charlene, Michelle's younger sister. Since Michele was last known to be with her sister they think Char may be the key to finding out who killed Michelle. Since the motorcycle rally at Sturgis is happening at the same time the FBI think it might be one of the motorcycle gangs, Lucifer's Lot. This book is gre ...more

A colleague recommended this free book. A murder mystery by an author I had not heard of. Downloaded the book and then it sat on my kindle for ages. Finally got round to reading it. Not bad especially since it was free and I usually expect to ditch free books after the first chapter!

Brace yourself, Brannan’s second book is more graphic, gritty, and suspenseful than her first (and I thought her first – In The Belly of Jonah- was all that!). Brannan creates characters you root for even when you shouldn’t like “Mully” whom I hope reappears in her series. I’m not one who enjoys a “series of books,” in fact I steer clear however Brannan has me hooked; the romance is downplayed yet tension filled, the plot is richly

I was excited to find this second book in the series because of how much I liked the first one. The mysteries are fast paced and an have a little more depth than other more lighthearted mystery collections. My reason for not giving this the five star rating is the same thing that prevented me from giving the first one five stars- the ending! Both books have a rather abrupt, tidy ending that stands in stark contrast to the suspenseful, action packed pages of the the rest of the novel. Maybe this ...more

The book got off to a slow start and for maybe the 1st 1/3 it was pretty slow and jumped around a lot and was a little hard to follow for me. At some points I considered forgetting it and starting another one, but I keep reading and the action and suspense picked up. You have in your mind who killed Michelle but you have to keep reading be see if your right.

The all takes place during bike week in Stugis in August so some of the language and descriptions fit the time and place. Not real detailed

Sandra Brannan has created a heart-pounding mystery thriller series around Liv Bergen, a woman who embodies the spirit of South Dakota. Much like her character Liv Bergen, Brannan has spent her career in the mining business.

Working her way up from day laborer in the company her grandfather founded to a top executive in the family business wasn't easy, as Sandra often received threads from those op
