Kayla is a 16-year-old girl who was adopted when she was little. She lives a normal life, with great friends, loving adoptive parents, and well... a not-so-great boyfriend. But the reason why she was given up for adoption was far from any usual reason. She was meant to be kept away from the Academy and anything else related to the supernatural beings that could hurt her.

When I finally did stop crying, he slowly pulled me away, and I’m not even sure what led us to this but he got even closer, his lips had barely touched mine. “I shouldn’t,” he said under his breath. I didn’t care. He made no effort to move… our lips still barely touching; I leaned closer and kissed him.

Before I start this review, I just want to say WOW, isn’t that cover lovely? This is what initially attracted me to the book. I love the cover! And as you all know, a great cover doesn’t make a g...more

I started reading this book about 4 hours ago and believe it or not i just finished it.. in only one day!

The story is simple Kayla is a 16 years old adobted teenager with a normal school life three BFFs Jess,Emily and Ashley who are not really her best friends and a boyfriend called Justin (who is a total jerk if you ask me) But things are going to be a bit tricky since our lovely Kayla started to see a bizzard girl which is happens to be a ghost... And at the same time that Kayla trying to foun...more

This book frustrated me. A lot. I felt like the whole idea behind it was good. I love books about fallen angels and all that, but the terrible writing in this book kept me from enjoying it like I should have. The language felt stiff and not at all natural and I had to force myself to keep reading instead of stopping out of frustration. I'm interested in what will happen with Kayla and Hunter in the next book, but I don't know if I can handle Lanzarotta's writing for a whole other book. S...more

Wide Awake was a wonderful book... I love the way the friendship between Hunter and Kayla builds though the entire book. All the twist and turns as she navigate through all the changes in her life kept me glued to the book. I completed the book in 3 hours... I think it might be a record for me. I could not put it down and could not wait to see what was going to happen on the next page.

I am looking forward to completing the trilogy!

I also wanted to give a shout out to Narrator of the book, Sarah...more

Before I begin my review I think it is important to mention that at the time of writing this book has a 4.5 rating on Amazon and 3.61 on Goodreads and most of the reviewers seem to have loved it. Unfortunately, I feel like I was reading a different book.

I tried my hardest to like the main character, Kayla, but for me she came across as a spoilt rich kid. If her being a spoilt rich kid was important to the plot in some way then maybe I could understand, but it wasn’t and all it did was make her u...more

I didn't hate this book--I just didn't like it.
First of all, was I really supposed to like Kayla? Because there was nothing about her to like. She was spoiled, shallow, selfish, two-faced, and wasn't aware of how to use her brain.
This book read as very immature. So many exclamation points where there really didn't need to be any.
The characters had no depth. Only Kayla really had any character development, and what she did have was inadequate. A lot of what she did or did not do was without any...more

This is one of those stories that I had a lot of hopes for, and it just didn't deliver to my expectations. The story started off good, and the characters were well-developed. I hated her boyfriend from the second he pulled her aside at the museum, and I loved Kayla what she jumped to cut him off at the pass. The girl has guts. Only, when she starts being followed by "ghosts," not so much.

The whole story started off with this creepy vibe, and the fact that Kayla is haunted really made me want to...more

I got drawn into the story right away from the beginning. We get to know Kayla, a young girl who breaks up with her boyfriend in the first chapter of Wide Awake, just because she feels he is going to break up with her anyway. That's the way Kayla handles things: She hurts others before they can hurt them. Indeed even her friends aren't really close to her, which is not surprising as soon you find out, that Jessica and Emily are the worst tattletales ever who would do anything for a great story a...more

Wide Awake (Academy of the Fallen Series) by Daniele Lanzarotta is a gripping story that is compellingly magnetic from the first page to the last. I had a difficult time stepping away from this original entrancing story and its great set of unforgettable characters.

The supernatural world that Lanzarotta created was truly immense even though the book is just at 280 pages. Even in such a short book, it contained a lot of details, surprises, adventures, and many emotions that you feel satisfied aft...more

Okay, I had this on my Kindle. No idea why, honestly, but it was there. I was looking for something to read and the myriad of review books sitting there didn't call to me. So, I gave this a shot since it was so short.

HOLY CRAP! I really really liked this story. I was amused by Kayla from the beginning, tbqh. She was acting so completely like a teenager. I love when teen characters act their age. However, I felt the story needed a bit more background earlier in the story. There were some things t...more

This is the first book I have read by this author and it won’t be my last. I read this book in one sitting. I could not put it down. Kayla is your ordinary 16 year old girl until one day she sees a little girl crying while on a school field trip and later in her house. She soon realizes that what she is seeing is a ghost. Kayla’s world is turned upside down not only can she see ghosts but demons also. Hunter says he can help Kayla with them but she needs to trust him. Hunter knows about Kayla’s...more

I had high hopes for Wide Awake. The cover art was professional and the book blurb was intriguing. A main character that was adopted and would have some dealings with other worldly beings promised to be fast paced and engrossing. Regrettably, it did not take long for my hopes to be dashed. Several things kept me from enjoying this novel. First, the author’s vocabulary was simplistic (in the opening paragraphs the adjectives used to describe the main character's boyfriend an...more

The first page will pull you in and keep you reading.
Kayla is a teen who sees a teenage girl named Carolyn, which is a ghost. Kayla soon realises that she can see, talk to and command ghosts. Just when she thinks she's losin it, Hunter a dark and mysterious teen at her school steps up and lets her know it will be ok, and he sees them also.
While trying to understand this new activity in her life, her and Hunter are also trying to find out why a demon is after her.

I really enjoyed this book. The...more

Decent premise but poor execution. The language was stilted, not conforming to general slang or speech. Very irritating.

It was a really good book. It kept me on the edge of my set and I never wanted to put it down. Second book should be good as the first!!!

What!?! I can't believe that was the ending! I started reading this book as a quickie read, which it was since I finished it in 3hrs. I wasn't expected to get sucked into the plot like I was. I am still confused as to what is really occurring in the book. Between the Haunted, the fallen and the academy, I can definitely say that I really can't predict this book just yet. It pains me to say this, but I think the story finished at exactly the right spot because now I am on a mission to continue re...more

I kind of want to read this book but at the same time I've read bad reviews making me not want to. I also don't want to wast five dollars on something that I didn't like, but it's either cleaning my room or reading a book soooo I chose the book even though it cost money and it doesn't cost money to clean but i don't like to clean soooo yeah. Ohhh or I could bake Chocolate chip cookies that sounds good too. Soo if there is a reason why somebody really like this book or hated it could you comment...more

I like this book. I wanted to wait to read it until i bought the second one, and im so glad i did, cuz otherwise i might have been tempted to throw my kindle across the room at the ending. LoL It ended in such an OMG moment. I like Kayla, and Hunter, but they are both stubborn, and i wanted to smack them across the head a few times. lol I really like them together and i cant wait to see where things go with them. I even thought there was a good villain, and by good i mean he was good at being a...more

the only thing i finished this book was because i want to know more about hunter and kayla relationship.
i didn't enjoy this book. it felt off. I can't put my finger on it, i just didn't like it as much as i thought i would.
though, I really like hunter and kayla relationship. I didn't like her father, her real father, daniel. ugh.
too much unfinished problem here. and i didn't like the idea of switching pov in the characters. one minute it was kayla pov, then it switch back to daniel and hun...more

I read and reviewed this book for Loves All Things Books:

This book totally rocked my world. The story was packed with action and some romance, a perfect YA read!

Kayla is a 16 year old living happily with her adoptive parents. Soon things get a little crazy when she starts seeing and talking to people that aren't really there. Just when she thinks that she may be losing it, Hunter confirms that she isn't crazy. He helps her to understand and use her abilities to talk to ghosts. Together they work...more

This story started very beautiful but along the way toward the end, something got wrong and it is not that beautiful anymore.Hunter's saying in the final scene" because i love you" is the most artificial thing i can think of right now.it feels like in this scene there is no place for them to have this feelings. And our main character, She is so inmature she takes one step to Hunter and Then she comes back to other guy. Her character chanced along the way and just because she discovered her powe...more

This book felt like fanfiction to me. The writing, the pace and the construction of the idea of the Academy were just off to me. I always thought something along the lines: something is missing or how can those things happened if some other thing just happened? I couldn’t concentrate properly to read the book as a book, you know? I think some of the fanfictions out there are really good and some are even better than a book. But this book didn’t do it for me.

It’s about Kayla,...more

Wide Awake was pretty vague. The writing or language setting was uncomfortable, i didn't like it, it was irritating. It was also hard to keep on reading and it also seems that the author had rushed it. I love books about Fallen Angels but this book was quite disappointment with the language. When i first saw this book, i was really excited about it. But when i started reading it, it didn't get my attention with Lanzarotta's writing. Her writing were too simple and plain.

The plot is great, i lov...more

My life had been pretty normal
until that point.

So.. school field trip! Who would have thought
that would mess up my so-called normal life?

OMG. I never thought this novel would be so good. Since there's not so many good angels/Fallen angels stories out there, I was wary to read this but the author did an excellent job keeping me enthralled with the storyline the whole time. Dark, cute, alluring and a quick, nice read.

It's hard to tell you the summary of this book without telling you the whole...more

Kayla is 16 and was adopted as a very young child by a loving couple who basically give her everything! She tends to be a little spoiled and a bit snotty! But that changes when suddenly she is seeing this little girl just about everywhere she goes. It takes Kayla a while to realize that the girl is a ghost. When she makes that realization she also discovers there is a “guy” in her math class that is just bugging the heck out of her…only she can see him too…or so it seems. Turns out Hunter, a kid...more

This book started off okay, but just got worse the farther I got into it. Kayla is pretty spoiled, and isn't a very good friend. She was difficult to route for, and the love story aspect wasn't convincing at all. The ending wasn't just a cliffhanger, it felt like the author accidentally deleted the last half of the book, and published it anyways. If I wasn't reading a digital copy- I would have thrown it across the room in disgust. I have no desire to read the next one.

Wide Awake starts off running. This makes it easy to engross yourself in the story effortlessly. Kayla is a very special character that seem wise beyond her years. As an adopted child readers will easily accept this as a realistic trait for her character. Hunter seems dark and mysterious from the start, so his character still remains a bit of a secret at the conclusion of this story. I look forward to book two in hopes that his personality will develop and broaden. These two will csrrg us throug...more
