Ok, wow. Creative does not even begin to describe this formidable world that Gennifer Albin has built. Bringing in some sci-fi elements into it, the explanations of the weaving and how the whole process works simply blew me away. When it starts off it garners a lot of questions and wonderment, but as the world building progresses, we're brought into an extremely complex, incredibly well described fu...more

Without a doubt Crewel is the most creative novel I've read so far this year. When I first read the blurb I thought, "A dystopian society where people are weaving time?! YES! Gimme! Tell me more!" The dystopian genre has really taken off lately and sometimes it can be hard to find a novel that separates itself from the pack. Crewel does just that and does it well. It completely stands out with its complex concept, feisty heroine and a plot that kept me guessing over and over. Whoa. Can I pull ou...more
Well, this is going to be a difficult review to write. Trust me, if I could, my entire review would comprise of a bunch of gifs depicting happy dances, like so:

And no, I don't know what that last gif is exactly. Sure, it might be irrelevant, but what I do know is that it's a woman in a crab costume and it's staying.
Now, where was I? Oh yeah, how if I could my entire review would be of gifs, but apparently, that's not a "proper" review, because it doesn't have to do with the contents of the boo...more

Originality and creativity flourish in Gennifer Albin’s debut novel, so much so that I wish I had written it myself. It’s imaginative to the core, thought-provoking and beautifully told. If anything, this book is a brilliant example of why I appreciate science fiction so greatly.
What captivated me the most about Crewel was Arras, a world almost dream-like in state and home to our main character Adelice. For Spinsters, time and matter are as visible as the threads that make up our clothing – they...more

I think we’re all familiar with the saying, “It’s not you, it’s me!” and while I would love to claim that my disappointed feelings concerning this book stem from me, and not the book itself, I honestly don’t think I can. Yes, my unusually prolific knowledge on dystopian and science-fiction novels definitely played a role in my lack of amazement at the so-called creativity of this novel and that same understanding enabled me to predict the ending of this novel far before the hal...more

"I'm here because it's the last place they'll look."
"Look for what?" I ask, unsure if I want to know the answer.
"Revolution."

I'll award Crewel a happily confuzzled 3.5 stars.Of course, it wouldn't be nice if I let you know just who said the above quote. I'll leave you with the element of mystery, as if this book wouldn't do that to you on its own.

In a word, I found Crewel inconsistent.
The good? The concept. I thought the central idea behind Crewel, returning to the roots of the word “spinster” and the mythology of weaving, was interesting and strong. Albin’s spinsters have the ability to manipulate and repair the weave of their world (the “weave” being the individual strands making up the physical world and the people in it, entwined with the constant flow of time). Weaving is a highly specialised skill requiring particular fin...more

What do I want to tell you about Crewel? I know I want to mention how extremely original and well thought out the premise is. It certainly is one if the most creative ideas I have come across this year. But I also think, for some readers, it will be a little hard to suspend disbelief. That was me in the beginning. I eventually ended up loving this one quite a bit, but I can totally understand why some readers didn't care for this book. For the most part, the reviews I have been reading are WOW,...more

Crewel surprised me. It’s not often I read sci-fi – mostly because I don’t know what I’m looking for. I know the contemporary genre inside out, and I find my way around the fantasy section fairly well, but sci-fi is a whole new ball game for me. But every time Crewel popped up on my Goodreads feed, I felt a spark of curiosity. Maybe it was the unusual name, the vivid cover or the unique (okay, weird) premise. Probably all three. So when I was offered Crewel for review, I jumped at the c...more

readers craving a girly Matrix story that serves love-triangles instead of solid world-building
'The tech is safer now ... It can change how a person acts and thinks.' I tell him about what Cormac said about isolating problem areas in the strand and splicing new material into an individual's thread.
I vividly remember the awe I felt when I was watching 'The Matrix' for the first time. Although it puzzled my mind with questions like 'How can virtual procreatic activity result in a real baby? Do the machines manufacture an embryo when a couple living in the Matrix stops using condoms?' or 'Ho...more

Not happy at all.
In fact, I'm downright disappointed.
I was so excited to read this. This book was was on my list of "must reads" of this year. The synopsis is so damn intriguing, right? So when I got this book, I was jumping up and down in excitement. The beginning started off really well - I was really into it. The synopsis I read said how Adelice has only a few hours to enjoy her freedom, because after that - well, I didn't know what to expect. CREWEL is dystopian goulash. It hits many notes familiar to readers who've had years to learn the genre and the original elements -- the idea that their world Arras, and everything in it, only exists because it's spun to life by Spinsters -- are either sadly neglected or underdeveloped.
I was interested in CREWEL for the worldbuilding - I've always loved the idea of Penelope on her loom in the Odyssey, the Fates and their threads, and I hoped the author would have an interesting spin on a goldmin...more

Nothing is clear about this book.
- The characters are off, their intentions and motivations and reactions are off.
- I don't understand the weaving of time and matter...how can you see a bird's-eye view of a street from threads?
- Why do Spinsters have to be dressed up and made to look beautiful? Why are cosmetics and fashion such a big deal!! I do not get!!
- If Spinsters had control of such power, why didn't they just change the government?

Low 4 stars but not 3.
This is a new flavor of dystopian. The setting is an alternate reality built from the raw materials of earth, mined from the defunct planet and sitting over it, woven by the Creweler and Spinsters. Naturally, there is a control freak maniac who sees himself as different from the earthly leaders in days of yore. Shocker alert: There is a love triangle with both boys not completely trustworthy. Also included are social climbing women.

Crewel is a debut like no other. So much buzz shrouded this book way before it was published, telling the story of an author striking gold during NaNoWriMo. When I found that publishers were actually competing over the rights to this book big time, I thought this book would be utterly amazing. While it does have its fantastic qualities, there was one major thing that prevented me from fully enjoying it.

Different. Crewel is yet another book that I started not knowing what the heck was going to happen. It's a fact for which I am extremely grateful because it was one helluva ride with each thing revealed, and with each thing laid out, well, the lower my jaw dropped.
It’s incredibly creative in how things are put together with a little bit of the fantastical/magical feel that I like, (one had to pay attention for fear of missing some vital piece) in the little more scary dystopian world. Get this:...more

Although on the surface the concept and ideas behind Crewel are original and intriguing, the flat characterisations made this book a let-down for me. Especially as I'd seen many favourable reviews for it beforehand, which always raises expectations.
It could be best described as a kind of alternate-reality, Matrix-style story, only with much more in the way of pretty dresses and make-up, and less butt-kicking and slow-mo martial arts sequences. I was initially very interested in the Spinsters and...more
For years, Adelice has been training to fail. She does not understand why exactly, only that her parents want no one to know of her gifts, and that the life of a Spinster is not the life she wishes to lead. In Arras, reality is woven, changed, and cut by the Spinsters, a group of women who have the ability to work the threads of reality using looms. They can dictate your world, all you see and all you consume. They can control your very mind or end your life, all at the behest of The Guild. Adel...more

The first thing that I thought about Gennifer Albin's "Crewel" when doing my overall reflective thoughts about it was that I probably should've never read it in consideration as a dystopian work (in general) right after the rather developed and meticulously constructed thematic of "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. Granted, they're both dystopian works, but for considerably different audiences, and I took that into consideration as I sat down to think about my reflections on "Crewel" and why it...more
A solid 3.5. I liked it more than I thought I would.
I picked up this book after reading the first few chapters and being very intrigued as to where this was headed. I didn't think I would end up liking it as much as I did, but the book got better as it went on and ends on a cliffhanger that doesn't punch you in the gut or anything, but leaves you wanting to know what happens next.

Crewel by Gennifer Albin has a unique world I really liked but left me feeling confused most of the time.
I love the idea of Crewel and the idea of weaving time. Arras is an interesting world but I didn’t quite understand how things operated and why. It was like a vague, gold world and the twist (was it a twist? I cannot tell anymore) made me even more perplexed.
