Although overall a nice read this story did disappoint me a bit. The lead character gets a revolutionary (steampunkish) prosthesis very early on in the book, which lead to certain expectations as to how the story would progress, but only near the end of the story are these expectations fulfilled and then things are going over the top fast. It's really a shame in my opinion when a story hook isn't used to it's full potential, and in this case I even got the feeling the story could also have been...more

Do not let the notion that this is a self published book deter you from giving this book a try. Nicole Ross, author of Fornax Rising, has created a most compelling character in Cassie Fornax.

Through no fault of her own, Cassie looses an arm and with it many of the conventions placed on women in the early 1900s. She is a great example of where one door closes another one opens. Cassie is unconventional, spunky and the kind of female character we need more of in literature. Cassie's spirit is stro...more

Fornax Rising by Nicole Ross is the story of Cassandra Fornax. Her father is a shipping tycoon and her Uncle Philip is a brilliant engineer and inventor. When visiting her uncle one summer she is bitten by a poisonous snake and has to have her hand amputated to save her life. Feeling responsible her uncle designs her an amazing prosthesis to replace what she has lost. When she returns to her normal life at home she is shunned by the deformity, many people claiming that God was punishing her for...more

Nicole Rossa's Fornax Rising is a wonderful coming-of-age story, suitable for all ages. It's what I would classify as subtle steampunk, in that it's a story with steampunk elements, but which never loses it's character focus. Too often steampunk tales get lost in the technology, burdening the reader with a myriad of technical details that overshadow everything else. Nicole smartly avoids that, developing Cassie so wonderfully that we often forget about her steampunk, prosthetic limb.

Fun story. Although it starts a bit slow, it picks up toward the end. Good book for younger readers, 7th-9th grade.

Promising first novel. I really enjoyed the protagonist and look forward to her future adventures.
