I've experienced a lot the last few years and I have a lot to share. So I hope that you'll take a moment to sit back, relax and enjoy the words I've put together for you in this book. I think you'll find I've left no stone unturned, no door unopened, no window unbroken, no rug unvacuumed, no ivories untickled. What I'm saying is, let us begin, shall we?

Note: This is a review of the audio edition.

I love Ellen Degeneres. Seriously, I'm not kidding. I know what you're thinking: you can't truly love someone whom you've never met and probably never will. But I truly love her in the way you love someone — or something — that you know with your whole heart is making the world a better place to live. And I am positive of this fact when it comes to this woman.
After a hard day, her humor and generosity and overall love for people and life are a balm on...more

You wanna read/listen to an amusing little time waster and you like Ellen DeGeneres' style of humor? This is your book. However, don't go into this expecting anything really substantial. Some chapters are a couple of words, maybe a sentence long. And while I adored some of the stories and was uplifted by the encouraging tone, that is where my biggest complaint is.

I listened to this in 3 hours. This is the absolute shortest audiobook I've ever listened to--and this goes for almost $30 retail. You...more

I only snickered a couple times while reading this. I wanted to laugh out loud! My favorite standard Ellen jokes are when she talks about not wearing pants or drinking too much wine.

I guess my expectations were a little off when I read this. I wanted to hear jokes or more about Ellen's life, but instead, I got chapters where she encouraged me to recycle, to be happy, and to meditate. She sounded an awful lot like Oprah. Not really. Ellen doesn't take herself too seriously. (See the title.) She e...more

I love Ellen. After listening to this audiobook I still love Ellen! Some people don't normally find her that amusing. To those people I say, "You're stupid." Just kidding. If you didn't think that was funny, then you might not like this book. But to me, it was laugh-out-loud hilarity the whole way through. A few jokes were even so funny that I kept reliving them afterwards and going around town laughing sporadically. It is probably best that I just let people think that I'm laughing at them rath...more

When I was a little girl, my grandfather once told me that when he spoke in front of a group, he often began with, "I know most people start their speeches with jokes, but I don't know any, so let's all think of our favorite joke and laugh." This book reminded me a lot of that joke.

While I don't watch Ellen's talk show, I do really like her and have read her other books. This one seems... gratuitous. One chapter is made up entirely of her making sounds. As in, mememememeeme. Or, bwabwabwa. A fe...more

Seriously...I'm Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres is a goofy, cute, and at-times comical book. Each chapter/section is random and does not make sense at some parts. If you like Ellen's brand of humour then this is a nice escape for a few hours. It's also a very quick read meant to pass the time. The book is supposed to highlight what's going on in Ellen's life but I'm able to pick out very little of what I think are actually real slices of her life when the rest is just meant to amuse and distract the...more

Hätte ich einen Artikel in einer beliebigen Frauenzeitschrift gelesen, ich wäre etwa gleich informiert und amüsiert. Das Buch tut keinem weh, aber auch keinem gut.
Irgendwer hat geschrieben "That book's a joke." Dem würd ich mich gern anschließen.

Perfect as an audiobook to listen to while baking (baking makes me happy; Ellen makes me happy). For a while I was disappointed with Ellen for going all talkshow and mainstream. But she just wants to make people happy and spread a little joy. So I've come to terms with it, and can love her again because she's doing exactly what she wants to do. Thanks, Ellen.

This audio book perks me up while sitting on metro on the way to work after a night of insomnia and 1.5 hours of sleep. So that's a good review so far.

Seriously... I'm Kidding was a quirky humorous book that is a suitable read for anyone. I thought that the book was going to be an auto-biography about Ellen, but it wasn't even close to that. It didn't really talk too much about what was happening in her life, but it was enjoyable, nonetheless. It made me laugh, and I thought that it depicted Ellen's personality really well. Even though I wish this book was an auto-biography, I still really liked it. It contained some good life lessons on how t...more

Yet again, Ellen Degeneres has created a humorous non-fiction novel. “Seriously... I'm Kidding” is a book with life lessons. We all know Ellen, and her true stories and how she has a magical way of telling them. This book is here to make you realize what you have. Plus, it reminds you to be happy, laugh, and to find out who you are!
Obviously, you will laugh a lot while reading this book. It is hard not to when she's so random and just plain hilarious. At first she will be talking about her gar...more

I am a huge Ellen Degeneres fan, I waste countless hours in the evening watching videos on youtube, laughing my head off and I record her TV show every day so I don't miss it whilst at work. She has such a bubbly life force and an amazing heart. She is so generous and caring, I love her spirit.
She mentioned this book on her show a couple of times and it sounded good so I put a request in at the library. It actually came in pretty quick and as it is only 241 pages I knew it would be a quick read...more

I bought this book at the airport on a whim because I was about to deal with something very serious back home so I thought this would be a light read. I was right… but I was a bit disappointed. I’m a HUGE Ellen fan so this was a letdown for me.

Some chapters were really good, through Ellen’s humour, she was able to convey the underlying messages, which are (similar to her show), be kind to one another, be honest with yourself, etc. But there were too many “filler” chapters...more

Less of an autobiography and more of a collection of comments and observations of everyday life, Seriously…I’m Kidding provides a light-hearted view of the little things in life much like the opening monologues on Ellen's television show. The majority of the reviews I had read beforehand were from disappointed fans who after reading the misleading blurb had expected to find an autobiographical piece so if you are looking to read about Ellen’s rise to fame and gain an insight into her daily life...more

From the voice of Dory in Disney Pixar's Finding Nemo, host of her own talk-show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a stand-up comedian and a bestselling author - Ellen just succeeds in everything she does. According to Forbes, Ellen DeGeneres is ranked forty-seven in 2012 for The World's Most Powerful Women. And, while many may know her from her talk-show, for some reading Seriously...I'm Kidding may be the closest thing you'll ever get other than not meeting her in person. Ellen just seems to "just kee...more

Before I begin, I have to say that I’m not a huge fan of Ellen. I think her wife is hilarious and loved Portia in “Arrested Development” and “Better Off Ted,” but when it comes to Ellen’s talk show… I haven’t watched one episode all the way through. Why did I pick up this audiobook, then? Basically, I was in the mood for a laugh, and I thought she was the woman who could give it to me. I ended up pretty disappointed.

Ellen’s third book, Seriously… I’m Kidding, is short; many of the chapters are...more

I wish I could have heard Ellen's voice while reading this book; I think if I were watching her doing these as single monologues, then had a break with other entertainment, I would have tolerated it more. (And for the record, I adore Ellen. I go back to her days with her sit-com These Friends of Mine, which became Ellen, and I cheered when she came out, not just because I was dating a woman myself at the time, but because I adore her for her bravery and her kind sense of humor.)

This started as a 2 but ended up as a 3 since I realized in the midst of writing the review that it's not the book but the style of the book I didn't care for.

This book was written in an authentic voice...based on what I've seen of Ellen, the book felt like Ellen was telling me stories and I could almost hear her voice as I read the book. There were several laugh out loud moments and I enjoy her honest, fun, clever sense of humor.

Side Note: After this book, I realized I do not like this type o...more

i picked this up out of desperation. i was half way to the train when i realized i had left the pattern for the rather complicated socks i was knitting at the time. i couldn't just look at the other rows i'd completed so far and figure it out. however, i also couldn't face a day on many trains with nothing to do. fortunately, there is a bookshop across the street from the station in katonah. it actually wasn't open yet but it's connected to the coffeeshop so they have a few titles for sale downs...more

Humor books read by the author make for some of the best audio books, I think. This is true as long as the author has a knack for delivery and tone of voice, and this is something Ellen honed a long time ago. I smiled a lot more than I laughed while listening to this, but I did have some laugh-out-loud moments too. The tongue-in-cheek urges to buy her other books and such did get a bit tiring.

The chapters are numerous, since they are all very short. For the audio CD, Ellen introduces each chapte...more

I was not planning on reading this book this month at all. It was by complete accident. The reason why I say this is because I was reading the first sentence of all of the books that I haven't read yet. When I got to this book I read the fist sentence, a hour later I had read half way though the book.

Its not the fact that it had me hooked, it was more of the fact that it was funny. I'm a HUGE fan of Ellen's show and I just love the way that the book made me laugh like it does when I watch her s...more

Ellen's book was the perfect balance of advice and jokes. It's an extremely light and easy read. I actually wasn't expecting it to be that easy of a read because I've never read any of her previous books, but I should've known since I've watched her show Ellen before. When reading her book, I begin to realize it's as if she's writing a chapter for a specific type of person reading it. Like for me it was this small paragraph that made me feel like she was speaking to me, personally:

One of my favorite parts:
"It's so rare for people to actually set aside time to curl up with a book and read. By the way, I don't know you have to curl up to a book, but that's what people say. You can't just say you're going to read a book because then someone will ask, 'Well how are you going to read it? What position will you be in?'
'I'm gonna curl up.'
'Oh, good. So you're not gonna stand?'
'No, no. I'm gonna curl up.'
'Okay, good. Hey, you're not gonna lay on your side, are you?'
'No. I promis...more

I adore Ellen and love her show but this book barely made the 3 star rating. I was ready to love this book but couldn’t for several reasons. The book is supposed to be an update on Ellen’s life during the past 8 years (when her last book came out). I haven’t read Ellen’s previous books but some major things have happened in recent years that I was curious to read about from her point of view. Sadly, the memoir lacks a clear sense of organization or direction. Ellen is constantly going off on the...more

Ellen Degeneres is the only person in this entire world who can constantly self promote herself without looking or sounding self centre. Ms. Degeneres happy, carefree, determine and funny personality always shine through with whatever project she doing. Whether that is hosting her talk show, The Ellen Degeneres Show, or writing her own humorous novel. Ellen's goal has always been to make other smile and that is no different with her novels (she already has three under her belt).

I love Ellen. I watched her sitcom when I was young, I remember when she came out, I watched her first episode of her talk show, I love her. She is hilarious. So, I was looking forward to reading this book.

I have not read her other two books so I didn't know exactly what to expect from this one. This is not a memoir. It is more a compilation of random thoughts Ellen has had since her last book.

There are a lot of really funny parts. I often found myself having to go back and reread things because...more

This book is more like a series of one-liners and throwaway jokes than a sustained narrative. Possibly a case of conversational style not working in print. There are certainly some very funny bits but overall I didn't love it, and I wanted to. I do think Ellen should host the Oscars any year that Billy Crystal isn't doing it. Maybe they could trade off years.

Let me just be clear: I love and am in love with Ellen DeGeneres. I sorta want to be her. I loved her when I was little and she had a show, and I loved her when I was in college and memorized her stand-up DVDs, and I loved her when she started the talk show, and I think Dory is the funniest part of Finding Nemo. So, with that in mind, my review... The book is funny! There were parts where I snorted out loud, and parts where I read something out loud to my partner but couldn't really get through...more
