You wanna read/listen to an amusing little time waster and you like Ellen DeGeneres' style of humor? This is your book. However, don't go into this expecting anything really substantial. Some chapters are a couple of words, maybe a sentence long. And while I adored some of the stories and was uplifted by the encouraging tone, that is where my biggest complaint is.

I only snickered a couple times while reading this. I wanted to laugh out loud! My favorite standard Ellen jokes are when she talks about not wearing pants or drinking too much wine.
I guess my expectations were a little off when I read this. I wanted to hear jokes or more about Ellen's life, but instead, I got chapters where she encouraged me to recycle, to be happy, and to meditate. She sounded an awful lot like Oprah. Not really. I love Ellen. After listening to this audiobook I still love Ellen! Some people don't normally find her that amusing. To those people I say, "You're stupid." Just kidding. If you didn't think that was funny, then you might not like this book. But to me, it was laugh-out-loud hilarity the whole way through. When I was a little girl, my grandfather once told me that when he spoke in front of a group, he often began with, "I know most people start their speeches with jokes, but I don't know any, so let's all think of our favorite joke and laugh." This book reminded me a lot of that joke.

Seriously...I'm Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres is a goofy, cute, and at-times comical book. Each chapter/section is random and does not make sense at some parts. If you like Ellen's brand of humour then this is a nice escape for a few hours. It's also a very quick read meant to pass the time. Hätte ich einen Artikel in einer beliebigen Frauenzeitschrift gelesen, ich wäre etwa gleich informiert und amüsiert. Das Buch tut keinem weh, aber auch keinem gut.

Perfect as an audiobook to listen to while baking (baking makes me happy; Ellen makes me happy). For a while I was disappointed with Ellen for going all talkshow and mainstream. But she just wants to make people happy and spread a little joy. So I've come to terms with it, and can love her again because she's doing exactly what she wants to do. Thanks, Ellen.
This audio book perks me up while sitting on metro on the way to work after a night of insomnia and 1.5 hours of sleep. So that's a good review so far.

Seriously... I'm Kidding was a quirky humorous book that is a suitable read for anyone. I thought that the book was going to be an auto-biography about Ellen, but it wasn't even close to that. Yet again, Ellen Degeneres has created a humorous non-fiction novel. “Seriously... I'm Kidding” is a book with life lessons. We all know Ellen, and her true stories and how she has a magical way of telling them. This book is here to make you realize what you have. I am a huge Ellen Degeneres fan, I waste countless hours in the evening watching videos on youtube, laughing my head off and I record her TV show every day so I don't miss it whilst at work. She has such a bubbly life force and an amazing heart. She is so generous and caring, I love her spirit.

I bought this book at the airport on a whim because I was about to deal with something very serious back home so I thought this would be a light read. I was right… but I was a bit disappointed. I’m a HUGE Ellen fan so this was a letdown for me.
Some chapters were really good, through Ellen’s humour, she was able to convey the underlying messages, which are (similar to her show), be kind to one another, be honest with yourself, etc. But there were too many “filler” chapters...more

Before I begin, I have to say that I’m not a huge fan of Ellen. I think her wife is hilarious and loved Portia in “Arrested Development” and “Better Off Ted,” but when it comes to Ellen’s talk show… I haven’t watched one episode all the way through. Why did I pick up this audiobook, then? Basically, I was in the mood for a laugh, and I thought she was the woman who could give it to me. I ended up pretty disappointed.

This started as a 2 but ended up as a 3 since I realized in the midst of writing the review that it's not the book but the style of the book I didn't care for.
This book was written in an authentic voice...based on what I've seen of Ellen, the book felt like Ellen was telling me stories and I could almost hear her voice as I read the book. There were several laugh out loud moments and I enjoy her honest, fun, clever sense of humor.

i picked this up out of desperation. i was half way to the train when i realized i had left the pattern for the rather complicated socks i was knitting at the time. i couldn't just look at the other rows i'd completed so far and figure it out. however, i also couldn't face a day on many trains with nothing to do. fortunately, there is a bookshop across the street from the station in katonah. it actually wasn't open yet but it's connected to the coffeeshop so they have a few titles for sale downs...more
Humor books read by the author make for some of the best audio books, I think. This is true as long as the author has a knack for delivery and tone of voice, and this is something Ellen honed a long time ago. I smiled a lot more than I laughed while listening to this, but I did have some laugh-out-loud moments too. The tongue-in-cheek urges to buy her other books and such did get a bit tiring.

I was not planning on reading this book this month at all. It was by complete accident. The reason why I say this is because I was reading the first sentence of all of the books that I haven't read yet. When I got to this book I read the fist sentence, a hour later I had read half way though the book.

Ellen's book was the perfect balance of advice and jokes. It's an extremely light and easy read. I actually wasn't expecting it to be that easy of a read because I've never read any of her previous books, but I should've known since I've watched her show Ellen before. When reading her book, I begin to realize it's as if she's writing a chapter for a specific type of person reading it. Like for me it was this small paragraph that made me feel like she was speaking to me, personally:

Ellen Degeneres is the only person in this entire world who can constantly self promote herself without looking or sounding self centre. Ms. Degeneres happy, carefree, determine and funny personality always shine through with whatever project she doing. Whether that is hosting her talk show, The Ellen Degeneres Show, or writing her own humorous novel. Ellen's goal has always been to make other smile and that is no different with her novels (she already has three under her belt).

This book is more like a series of one-liners and throwaway jokes than a sustained narrative. Possibly a case of conversational style not working in print. There are certainly some very funny bits but overall I didn't love it, and I wanted to. I do think Ellen should host the Oscars any year that Billy Crystal isn't doing it. Maybe they could trade off years.

Let me just be clear: I love and am in love with Ellen DeGeneres. I sorta want to be her. I loved her when I was little and she had a show, and I loved her when I was in college and memorized her stand-up DVDs, and I loved her when she started the talk show, and I think Dory is the funniest part of Finding Nemo.
