Why do we love dysfunctional characters?
Is it because we can relate?
Is it because we believe that if THEY can survive, maybe we can?
Is it because we are warped and like to see other people suffer with life?
Who knows!
Annabelle is VERY dysfunctional. She has low self-esteem. She drinks too much, she loves too hard, and the monsters she battles in her real world don’t compare to the demons she battles on the inside! Regardless, I love Annabelle.
In Blood on the Bayou, Annabelle’s love life...more
The emotional tornado that is Annabelle's life continues in Blood on the Bayou. This book was just as painful and gut-wrenching to read as the first one, Dead on the Delta, and even more so because I was already familiar with Annabelle and felt her more strongly this time around.
Without a doubt, the best (and at times, worst) part of this series is Annabelle's character. The one word that most adequately describes her is "complex". You can't simply hate or love her; there's a world of gray betwe...more

Immediate reaction after reading the last word:
Ugh. I'll get around to a gripe-fest at some point.
After some reflection:
Oh, Annabelle. What happened to you, my dear? When did you become such a twat? I had grown so fond of you in Dead on the Delta. I told all my friends about you. I cared for you. I commiserated with you about stupid Hitch and your unresolved feelings towards him. When you felt pain, I felt pain. When you took the stinky cat home, I loved you even more. When you made...more

But is it really cheating if you're not officially together? Does an invisible man count as a man? If a penis you can't see falls in the forest is it really a penis at all?

Blood on the Bayou once again takes us into the world of Stacey Jay, and her heroine Annabelle Lee. It has been 3 weeks since the events of Dead on the Delta and Annabelle is as dysfunctional as they come still with her pill popping, and heavy drinking.
It's been related that Annabelle and Stacia Kane’s Chess Putnam could be best friends. In fact, it would be awesome to have a crossover short story featuring the two of them together solving the world’s...more

I am one of those people who judges a story based on how I feel when it's over. Yes, I value the journey, but if I'm not satisfied with the destination, the whole thing is damn near ruined. This book is a perfect example of a story destroyed by an unsatisfactory conclusion. I really enjoyed it. I was invested 100% in the characters and the outcome. And then the last chapter happened, prompting me to curse out loud and then stalk Twitter for someone to listen to me vent.

I never thought I would say this about a heroine in a book but Annabelle is a slut ..plain and simple ..because what else would you call a woman who is in a relationship with a guy she "says" she loves yet sleeps with another guy who makes her happy and still in love and lusts over yet another guy from her past?! Not to mention her alchahole problem..I

In all honesty, this book deserves 1.5 stars. Barely. But I'm felling generous today so 2 stars it is.
Where to start? It feels like Ms Jay wasn't even trying, like she didn't care about the characters and the series anymore. Almost like she phoned it in, drunk. There are so many typos it got my eye twitching right off. There's even a 'your're' where a 'your' should be, I kid you not. And our little MC, Anna-Belle Lee, is so inconsistent, so bi-polar, she's not even recognizable. One minute she...more

Okay. So why would an FBI agent as a fairy poop scooping, ex-med student to help him solve a murder case? I could understand if she was a cop or a detective but her job is to scoop fairy poop. On what possible level was she qualified to help with this? Because she's immune to fairy bites?

i think i mean 3 1/2 stars. i am not sure.
Murderous, plotting fairies and vegetarian, acid spitting pixies. What else could i possibly ask for? Complicated southern gossip? Check. Sex scenes with invisible men? I didn't ask for it, but I'll take it none the less.
This book was a little complicated to follow. I would imagine that if you didn't read the previous book you would get really lost, really quickly. i kind of wish i took a quick refresher before i dived into this one, but i caught back up...more

Annabelle Lee is back in “Blood on the Bayou”; the sequel to “Dead on the Delta”. When her ex-boyfriend Hitch asks her to help him solve the mysterious death of his friend and colleague Steven Annabelle reluctantly agrees. She knows it isn’t the best idea to work that close to the man she still loves, especially when things with her current boyfriend Cane are still rocky.

I was so, so looking forward to this book. Checked Amazon every month or two for a release date, pre-ordered it the second the buy button went live. I mean, really looking forward to it. I loved Dead on the Delta. I loved the paranormal/Southern Gothic/gritty/grimy/love triangle tangle of it all.
But BLOOD ON THE BAYOU is barely squeaking by with three stars here. Most of it is about finding, and shutting down the mysterious covert activity taking in some underground swamp caves. But the way the...more

I wasn't completely sold on Annabelle in Dead on the Delta, but this book has changed that! Annabelle was much more nuanced and self-actualized here than she was previously. She was kicking ass through the whole book. I really enjoyed the mystery and some of the closure aspects that were presented. I didn't enjoy the way the book ended, especially if Stacey Jaye won't be writing another. I have to know what happens to Gimpy!

Annabelle Lee is one of the 5% immune to the venom that comes with a fairy bite. Annabelle works for the FCC (Fairy Containtment and Control) collecting fairy samples in the bayou. After being suspended by the FCC, Annabelle agrees to help her FBI ex-boyfriend, Hitch with finding and shutting down an undercover drug operation in the bayou. The Fearless Series Every UF Fan Should Read
Being immune to Fairy venom should be awesome, but for Annabelle Lee it's really been a curse. Once again called to duty helping investigate a murder she winds up once more tangled in between the man she once loved and the one she's still trying to figure out. But Annabelle can barely take care of herself, or keep Gimpy, the cat she's unwittingly adopted, from getting into all sorts of dietary disasters let alone settle down. Annabelle Lee, a Fairy Containment and Control agent with immunity to fairy venom, is once again out in the bayou investigating a murder. This time it’s at the request of her former lover Hitch, to lend her assistance to an off the books investigation of a secret chemical weapons lab that he’s desperate to resolve. In this fantastic sequel to Dead on the Delta, we see the changes Annabelle’s going through after her adventures with killer fairies, cranky kitties, invisible people and agents of th...more
I liked Blood on the Bayou so much better than Jay's first book, Dead on the Delta. Last go 'round every time I managed to work up a bit of sympathy for fairy-immune but drug and alcohol addicted leading lady Annabelle Lee, she'd screw up big time, and Annabelle was such a train wreck in the last book that I didn't think I'd be continuing on with the series despite the fact that the fenced in world at the edge of a bayou populated with virulent fairies was really interesting.

Don't know if I have the time or energy to put much into this review beyond stating this was a hot mess & I gave it 2 stars because I found it interesting enough to finish the book. I read the first in the series and while I wasn't in love with the protagonist and her many flaws, I was intrigued enough by the world and initial plot to read the second in the series. As pointed out in other reviews, there are problems with editing that I found distracting. Her inability to trust any other char...more
Wow, what an amazing follow up. Seriously if you have not started this series yet you must go now and read Dead on the Delta! These 2 books will totally suck you in. I love when I can say the second book is as awesome if not more awesome then the first.
Poor Annabelle really has no idea who she can trust. It seems everyone around her has their own secrets and her poor world is tearing apart. Then there are the surprises the fairies throw her way! One fairie in particular starts haunting her dream...more

Life in Donaldsonville, Louisiana may have settled down in the three weeks since Annabelle Lee discovered...so to speak...who had killed a child and left her body in the bayou, but that doesn't mean that Annabelle's life in any way resembles what it had been before the revelations, losses, and painful realizations bulldozed her body, heart, and mind during that investigation. Hey, at least she still has the booze. Thankfully, she still has the booze.

I really enjoyed this second installment in the Annabelle Lee series. Annabelle's personal life continues to be messed up, but I am actually seeing some growth in her choices. We now have 3 potential suitors, but I think she is figuring out what she needs, and what the men need, and whether or not she can provide it.

I think that i would really like to have the next book to read, right about now....
Annabelle, nicknamed by her "friends", as "slut" and "mess" doesn't have an easy task in this book.
Introducing a new geometrical figure to the world of romance:
THE LOVE QUADRANGLE/RECTANGLE :
Yessss, you know how in some books there's the love triangle scene?
Well in this one we have, a quadrangle or rectangle. Annabelle plus Cane _ the current boyfriend for about two years now _ plus Hitch, the ex-boyfriend, plus T...more

I enjoyed Dead on the Dead and had high hopes going into Blood on the Bayou. But for me BotB fell a little short from DotD. I found my self skimming a few parts in the book just to read the dialogue in hopes that the pace would pick up a little bit.
Things I liked:
Annabelle's ability to talk to the fairies and the funny as hell bathroom scene with the King of the fairies which she referred to a Grandpa Fairies. (Which made me picture him looking like a cross between the pixies in Harry Potter and...more

A nice followup to book one, but there was a little bit too much going on for me, especially in the love interest department.
Our heroine Annabelle (if you can call a semi-alcoholic indecisive hot mess a heroine) has agreed to help ex-boyfriend and current FBI operative Hitch solve the case of the missing syringes. Basically, Annabelle gets in way over her head but does manage to stay smart and avoid looking like she has no idea what she's doing. Annabelle's character does 'detective' very well a...more

If I had any doubts on whether this author was talented or not, this book squashed those ambiguous feelings with a vengeance. Everything that I had issue with in the last book seems to have been worked out for its followup. Brilliantly written and edited, with imagery to match. I couldn't help but get sucked into this book, right from the start. Jay has expertly crafted an interesting & unique world I definitely would like to know more of, and a likable and often funny self-deprecating prota...more
Well, I tried.
But I can't. I can't love this book as much as everyone does.
So I guess I am one of the minority. *shrugs*
I have zero tolerance for low self-esteem characters who continue not to show much growth.
I have zero tolerance for messy love triangles.
I have zero tolerance for friends who overstep the boundaries.
In other words, this book is a mess to me.
It messed up my head, it messed up my feelings, it riled up my anger and I really hate the messy love triangles.

There is a lot to love about Stacey Jay’s Annabelle Lee series, not the least of which is Annabelle herself. The worldbuilding is fantastic and the supporting characters are nearly as wonderful as Annabelle. My only real complaint about this series is that the books seem to be a tad overlong. Maybe it’s just me, but with this book and the first one I found myself wanting to skim so I could get closer to the action, but I didn’t and perhaps that is why I feel like I completely get Annabelle and h...more
I've been waiting to read Blood on the Bayou for a long time; ever since I finished Dead on the Delta, in fact. That kind of anticipation can make some high expectations...and spectacular failures when an author doesn't live up to them. Stacey Jay didn't let me down though. I loved every bit of Blood on the Bayou. While it wallowed a bit in relationship angst--be prepared for her love life to get even more complicated than in the first book--I forgave it because of the pure awesomeness of the re...more
