One of my favorite paranormal series is Jessica Andersen’s Novels of the Final Prophecy. It’s an incredible series about the world coming to an end on December 21 2012. 2 days and I am done.. That says a LOT about a book!! :) I loved this one. Jessica Andersen can write a book and have it all right. Great hero and heroine chemistry and man she sets you up for the last book in November.. Rabbit why?? OH my big spoiler and I won't say but WOW!! I never expected that!! Now hurry up November! Cara is now the leader of the Winikin, and that is not an easy job. She brought them in, the ones that ran away from the massacre, the ones that lost their families. They don’t really want to work as servants for the Nightkeepers, and certainly not be used as cannon fodder. The worst part about this book was that I seriously never wanted it to end. This was the last of the Nightkeepers for a while, and I wanted the experience to last and to stay a little bit wrapped up in their fight to save the world. However, at the same time, I wanted to keep reading and to find out how Cara, the winikin leader, and Sven, the Nightkeepers loner found a way to make things work.

Ok. As much as I wanted to give this 5 stars, I really can't say it was amazing - mainly because for the first 3/4 of the book I really wasn't a fan of Cara. Other than that, I think it was worthy of the 5 star rating - so let's go with 4.5 stars. Here's the why's (without spoilers):

I really liked Sven. He is real in a way that so many other keadingn guys aren't. He isn't all stuck on himself and his abilities, ut he isn't down on himself either. He knows that he hasn't been good aboout staying...more Ok. As much as I wanted to give this 5 stars, I really can't say it was amazing - mainly because for the first 3/4 of the book I really wasn't a fan of Cara. Other than that, I think it was worthy of the 5 star rating - so let's go with 4.5 stars. Here's the why's (without spoilers):

I really liked Sven. He is real in a way that so many other keadingn guys aren't. He isn't all stuck on himself and his abilities, ut he isn't down on himself either. He knows that he hasn't been good aboout staying in one place and being reliable - especially for Cara - and that has him convinced that he isn't worthy of Cara because he doesn't have the "staying power" she deserves. He sees her for what she is and knows she has so much more in her than she herself recognizes - and he not only supports it, he encourages it. He isn't an overthe top alpha, but he is still alpha material. His actions are tempered by his nature and his need to roam. He fianlly realizes what the urges he fells through out the book are (and if I say ANYTHING else it would be a spoiler) and - natch - everything works out...with at least 2 unexpected turns (ok, one could be guessed at if you are paying very close attention, but the other is a stunner)... at the end of the book. What Sven does at the end is above and beyond and makes him a hero like few others have been (at least for me).

Cara wasn't so much a whinner or an obsinate overthe top heroine as she was annoying and unable to see any other opinion or thought pattern other than the one she had predetermined as right before this story began. She refuses to see the good (or bad in a few cases - again, spoiler if I say more) in anyone or any situation until it has been shoved down her throat - usually repeatedly - and there is just no way to not see it any more. Example (and this is nt really a spoiler, but is a small tip off): Cara goes along with a plan made by Dez, Sven, and a few other Night Keepers after something happens to her - and it goes all wrong. She decides after fact that she should have know better, should have insisted it be done differently, and has convinced herself it was really a power play by Dez to remind the winikin that they could make their own decisions as long as they remembered that he was allowing it. She isn't right in that assessment, but she can't get over her "I must be loyal to the winikin mo matter what or they won't like & accept me" thought pattern...and it gets almost as annoying as her conviction that no matter what Sven does or says, he is unreliable in the long term and it will never work out between them.

For the story - awesome! Doc Jess managed to get several surprises into the book. In several cases (as is her way) they are perfectly clear in retrospect (isn't hindsight always 20/20?). But they were not what I expected and, just for a change, the ending and resolution of the romance was not what you are expecting. It was an HEA, but the fina comments point out that they are still working through Sven's need to roam, Cara's need to be her own person, and the fact that neither of them has ever been in a relationship so they are taking it one day at a time - but they are doing it together and are happy with it. I really like the twists and turns and the unexpected happenings in the story and I am excited for the next book. Overall, I highly recommend the book.(less)

I always love Andersen's Mayan Doomsday series, but this one seemed like a quick patch-work of sketchy writing. I was looking forward to the emotional whirlwind of romance and heartache that usually follows her characters around. I had mixed feelings going into this book, since Cara, who so wanted to be a full Nightkeeper, and hated being a Winikin (a servant to the Nightkeepers), was hardly around throughout this series, until near the end of the last book. I had mixed feelings going into this book, since Cara, who so wanted to be a full Nightkeeper, and hated being a Winikin (a servant to the Nightkeepers), was hardly around throughout this series, until near the end of the last book. Sven, a coyote Nightkeeper, has been with us, but somewhat distant, but I loved when Mac, his coyote familiar became part of the story. Because of their history, her hidden love of Sven, and the fact that a Mage and Winikin pairing is forbidden, I wasn’t sure that this would ever work, and of course I was so wrong. As Andersen usually does, she makes it work, and boy does she.

I loved Cara from the start….loved her strength, determination to lead the winikins, her vulnerability; and her ability fight off her love of Sven. Cara knew it was lost cause, as he did not feel the same for her, and he was never there for her. At first, I was not too crazy about Sven, and his insistence to ignore his feelings for Cara, and always running away. But when he opens himself up, that totally changes and I ended up loving him. Wow…their first mating was awesome. I have always said, Andersen has a wonderful personal touch to her steamy sex scenes, and that was hot. I also loved loved Mac, and his ability to mind talk to Sven, and even to Cara. A very nice touch.

Dez is back, as he is the King, and it is only a short time to equinox. The Nightkeepers need help to fight their battle against the demons. Dez enlists Sven’s help to bring in the Winikins into their battle as warriors instead of servants to the magi, as he wants Sven to work with Cara. Cara, who is the Winikins leader, must bring them together to help, but there is dissention within her group, as the bond between the Nightkeepers and Winikin has been split, with much anger. It is a betrayal within the Winikins that brings Cara and Sven together, and upsets the balance that needs mending, in order for all to survive. With the end of days near, they must all work together to have any chance to win this war, and save the world. The question is can Sven stop running away, face up to his love for Cara, and can Cara forgive Sven….all this besides fighting together to beats the demons they have to face.

Magic Unchained was an exciting story from start to finish. So much action, wheter it was with the Winkins, the demons, the adventure to steal the artifact necessary for them to win the war, and the equinox battle. But the romance between Cara and Sven was wonderful, and frustrating at the same time. Everytime you think ..thank god..they are finally together, then something else happens. But their chemistry together, their sexual scenes were always steamy, and they so belonged together.

It was nice to see Dez and Reese, and Rabbit had a big story in this book, which is leading up to the finale….the end of days is almost here. I felt though that even if we saw some of the others, it wasn’t like the other books, where they did play a bigger part in the stories. Hopefully, in the finale, we will get to see them all more. Rabbit and Myrienne will be the main characters in Jess Andersen’s Spellfire coming in November, 2012. Anna will also get her closure in that book. I made a prediction in my first review of this series that I will not repeat...no spoilers. I did not want to see this…I feared this would happen, and now with that spoiler at the end…I am sure it’s going to happen.

Once again, Andersen does a fantastic job in keeping this series fresh, and heading to an exciting finish. Magic Unchained had a wild and climatic ending, with a big surprise twist. On to Spellfire, and the finale of Nightkeepers in November. I will miss them all. But having loved this series, and love love Jess Andersen’s writing..I will follow her next series that she is working on.

One of the things about this series, is the depth of feelings and the intensity in which it was written. When I first picked up Nightkeepers, I liked the concept. I was intrigued, then I opened the book. It was a slow start.. I would read a bit then think about it, then read some more.. gradually it sucked me in. When I finished the book, I opened my eyes and felt like I had been in a different world, it was an almost drugged feeling and every book Doc Jess has written in this series has that same pull.. Magic Unchained not the least of them.

I had a hard time writing this review not because I didn’t love the book but rather because it is so very much more than boy meets girl romance.. While the story between Cara and Sven is wonderful and I will address that there was just so much going on. Anna receives a vision, being that she was never completely trained she has to work hard on just deciphering it. She finally realizes that the team must bring back the father.. Throughout the book the Nightkeepers goal is to resurrect the First Father.. This is the main task of this book of course no way would Doc Jess allow for just one story line..

The Winikin are determined to fight on their own, fight for themselves not as indentured servants to the Nightkeepers but as relevant individuals in the fight. To this end, battle games are played and Cara has to learn how to make life and death decisions. To understand when to accept a death and when to fight for life. She is not just fighting to get the Winikin their rights but she is also fighting the “traditionalists” who insist that the old ways are the only ways. Her biggest opponent is her own father, whom I happen to think is a complete and total sleazebag to her. Total and complete lack of support and yet he all but dotes on Sven... his NightKeeper.. Yeah I hate when parents refuse to see the value in their children.. I understand the importance in the story line yet, I can never like those characters.. On top of trying to bring the Winikin into the battle, to lead them as best she can, her second in command has decided that they should pair up. So now Cara has to deal with wanting something she can’t have, having something she doesn’t want and of course a father who supports her staying in indentureland both in the way she fights the battle and the way she finds love.

Sven is the eternal lone wolf.. ok Coyote, destined to run free. He left the safety of Carlos’ ranch at an early age, partially to escape unwanted feelings for Cara and partially because he needed to roam. He has finally stepped up in the NightKeeper world and has become an integral part of the team but one thing remains the same. He still wants Cara, well he wants Cara AND he wants to roam.. He has no clue how to be more than he is and isn’t sure that he should. A Winikin and a Nightkeeper just can’t be. It is taboo in the biggest sense of the word. Sven has never been my favorite character because he always seems the most selfish. The one who puts me first. And yet he is determined to become the man he should be. To step it up for Cara.. to be there at her side. Throughout the book, he is constantly tested and tempted and has to learn how to make the right choice. It is a very intense inner battle. Obviously, I can’t tell you more because it is such an integral part of the story.

While Cara, Sven and the rest of the Nightkeeper compound are doing their best to deal with issue after issues.. Rabbit is fighting his own inner battle. Honestly, this poor kid. The only thing consistent about him is the fact that once he acts, it will probably be the wrong act. He has the heart of a champion and the self esteem of a peanut.. He is so determined to prove to them all that he has self worth.. Grrrr I seriously hate Red Boar and what that horrid, horrid man did to his son while raising him. This child needed love.. but Red Boar the self pitying scuzz ball had to worry about how his life had been destroyed instead of dealing with the gift he had been given. I am seriously hoping that when Rabbit saves the world (and I seriously hope it is Rabbit who does it) that he can in your face Red Boar.. either literally or metaphorically I don’t care.. I just want Rabbit to be able to do the right thing and be acknowledged as the amazing young man he is.

I know, this review was not in my normal style, that I discussed characters not in action and I rambled a bit more than usual. I needed to do so. To write a simple review on such an intense book would be almost criminal. I love this series. It has intrigued me since I saw it on Amazon and thought the concept was just fantastic!! November can’t come soon enough! And Doc Jess was gracious enough to get the book out with plenty of time to read before Dec 21.. Just in case the NightKeepers fail..

People you only have a few more guaranteed months to read this series!! If the Nightkeepers loose you will regret not having taken the time to get these books read (yep, that is what you are going to worry about).. Seriously, this is a must read series..

This is one of those series that you really need to read from the beginning for it all to make sense. I think there are too many references in this story that will have no meaning to the reader unless they know the backstory.

That being said, this is another great addition to the series. The Nightkeepers exist to keep the world safe through the end of the Mayan calendar. The Winnikins are their non-magically inclined sidekicks. Sven and Cara were brought up together after the great massacre that...more

I have always thought that the winikin seem to get the shaft within this series. They seem like they are just glorified servants, so I was glad to see that this book finally addresses this issue. I can also see why there would be issues between the old winikin and the new ones. The old ones were raised in the culture, while the new ones have had to live in the aftermath.

Can't believe I've got to wait until November to finish this series. It has been a hell of a ride and I don't want it to end.
Sven and Cara are a really great couple and they finally overcame their problems. There were some hints about the next and final book which I found pretty obvious but I do hope Rabbit's book will be overwhelming and mind-blowing. Right now I'm only wishing that Myrinne turns out to be the best person in the world because or the author does something so I can really like h...more

I can't decide if I like Sven and Cara. I liked Sven fine, but for some reason I found Cara to be an annoying person.

I must admit that I'm glad that I waited to read this installment as long as I did...because I do not have to wait forever for the last one.

If you liked the previous books, I'm sure you'll like this one. The story brings up closer to the end of days. The winnikin show some gumption and a lot of annoying behavior in my opinion. But eventually things happen as they're meant to hap...more

Wasn't as keen on the Rabbit subplot... And, oh my, the twist at the end! Now I know who Anna's going to end up with. Can't wait for the finale.

This installment of the Nightkeepers takes the reader closer to the end time and tells Sven and Cara's story. Sven the coyote Mage and his "winikin" Cara have a lot of growing up to do while dealing with a past neither one of them have ever faced.

This wasn't my favorite of the series and for me really didn't "pick up" till about 2/3 of the way through. But gosh did it end with a bang - one I wasn't expecting (you know how you read so much you can usually figure out what is going to happen - not...more

I really enjoyed this one. I had been looking forward to Cara and Sven's story since Nightkeepers (Book #1) because I liked the characters back when they were first introduced. The couple really expressed themselves in this book; Sven as roving and restless while Cara is loyal and spirited, and I LOVED the familiars.

Yes finally Jessica Anderson is back on track!!

This was an awesome installment and one I've been waiting for ages for.

Excellent plot, the characters were terrific and the love was believable.

Sven is a seriously sexy character and you can see his love for Cara grow through the story. Cara is kick ass and denies her feelings most of the time but with great cause.

I loved these two characters and I loved the little snippets of the other characters and getting to see what they were up to..

This latest book has left some real holes and I can't help feeling like there really needed to be one more in the series before the final book. Maybe I was just hoping all aalong for Anna to have her own book but she really does need more attentioon than she has received. Plus no where in this book was the preview that was at the end of the last which is frustrating to me. Oh well, still a good read and now I have many questions for the next book to hopefully answer.

I am a huge fan of Doc Jess. But with this book, she exceeded all my expectations! This is the next to last in this series. Which is really said. I've grown to love all the characters and I'm really going to miss them. This is a fast paced story with some twists coming that you don't expect. If you haven't tried this series, you need to find them and check it out. It's well worth it!

Almost done and loving it. Jessica Andersen does such a great job with action, romance, and creating a paranormal world that is believable. I loved seeing the softer side of Sven and Cara's kick butt taking charge role as Winikin leader. Nice job, Jess. I'll be sure to write up a review when I finish the book.

LOL, gotta love summer time. Took me almost 2 months to read this one even though it was really good! Quite the ending...will be interesting to see what the crap happened to Rabbit! Looking forward to the next one...and possibly the last since "D Day" is this December. Great series.
