”I wasn’t surprised,” I said. “I knew Old Shep was going to die before I started page one.”
”Don’t be ridiculous,“ the teacher snapped. “How?”
I shrugged. “Because the dog always dies. Go to the library and pick out a book with an award sticker and a dog on the cover. Trust me, that dog is going down.”
And from there, the woes of Wallace Wallace spiral ever downward. Now Wallace Wallace (WW going forward and not to be confused with Humbert Humbert, who had his own obsessive behaviors) is one co...more
No More Dead Dogs is a unique story starring a football player that’s as honest as anything, a serious seventh-grade actress, and a play. Wallace Wallace, the football hero of Bedford, is not allowed on the team after he writes a terrible report on the book Old Shep, My Pal. He has nowhere to go during detention, so he works with the play, shelling out ideas and practically takes it over. Will he rewrite his unpleasing review to return to his team, or give it up for the play?

I don’t know that much about Gordon Korman, the author of No More Dead Dogs. I think he did pretty well, but it was slow moving. I believe he could have made it more interesting by either making it have more action or making it shorter. This would mean it has less dead time. By “dead time” I mean the characters just babbling about random stuff.

No More Dead Dogs takes place during the school football season. Wallace Wallace cannot tell a lie. When he has to write a book report on Old Shep, My Pal he writes how awful the book is. During detention he has to sit and watch rehearsals for the play Old Shep, My Pal that his teacher is directing. Because of the detention, Wallace is not permitted to play football. Oddly ...more

“No More Dead Dogs”, if not on the level of Korman’s best, nonetheless demonstrates that he can be very funny even in his secondary work. As always, the dialogue is great and the set-pieces are hilarious. He also throws in a well-executed mystery and gives a little extra depth via the relationship between main character Wallace and his ex-best-friend Steve. If nothing else, “No More Dead Dogs” demonstrates that Korman has come a long way from the MacDonald Hall books, ...more

Wallace Wallace is a boy that can only tell the truth and nothing but the truth. He was asked to do a book report and well, said “it sucked and that the dog always dies” (which it does in like every story). He was asked to redo do it, but he didn’t, which got him in a lot of trouble. He couldn’t do his sports and his punishment was detention. This meant he had to help and be in the play, “Old Shep, My Pal.” This is where things got a ...more
