This was a free book through Goodreads! Yey!

It is, as the name suggests, a cookbook. It doesn't have lots of glossy photographs of food no one has ever seen outside of an episode of Nigella Bites, it doesn't have a photograph and endorsement of a celebrity chef, desperate to show the world the extent of his culinary skills and unique interpretation of a truffle souffle - the pictures are in fact basic line drawings, mostly there to break up the text. What does have is 170 odd pages of very simpl...more

Pioneers definitely fall into my homesteading review week as they had to use only things they grew to cook, no local grocery for them to run and pick up some frozen pizzas for dinner!

When I saw this cookbook was out I sent to the publisher Leatherwood Press, asking for a review copy. I knew it would be right up my alley! I love reviewing books that I am excited about without even seeing them first!

I first noticed a recipe for Machaca which I recently had a friend of Mexican heritage tell me abo...more

I have this cookbook and I love it!!! I've had it for awhile, but I didn't think to do a review in Goodreads. Sorry everyone if you've missed out! Please don't make fun of me, but a lot of history is boring to me. However, when you put fun old-timey phrases, along with explanations of why things are the way they are, and add yummy food to that, I'm in! Yes, I learned things from this that were quite interesting. It was also fun to read the sections about hunting and preparing the game, since I m...more

I love to cook and I love to bake. But I'm not flashy at either. I'm not daring to try exotic foods (much to my husband's disappointment). So when I try new recipes, I like to have familiar ingredients. When I saw the title of this cookbook, it appealed to me. Not only are many of the ingredients familiar, I love to learn how people did things "way back when."

Barton starts the cookbook with a short overview on pioneers and their rustic ways of cooking. Her recipes are broken into nine categorie...more

I recieved my copy of The Pioneer Cookbook through Goodreads Firstreads for free.
I recieved this book, eagerly tore open the envelope so hold my new cookbook. Its very charming, a little rustic and interesting. I'll explain my reasons for calling it as such. The recipes in this book are classics, I have known many of these recipes for a long time. However that may have to do with the fact I cook like a little old Ukranian woman. The recipes are good; good food, wholesome, filling and tastey. It...more

No cookbook collector should be without this book on their shelf. Not only does she provide wonderful recipes, she also includes the history of the recipe, what country it came from and how it evolved in the United States. Also, full of great little quotes and sayings from the 19th century.

I have always wanted to try cooking like my great-great grandmothers. Sounds like fun!

Really liked this book. It has the recipes in it that I cherished from childhood. Although no one can duplicate mom or grandma's food, this book surely does try.
