In the latest Novel of the Elder Races, a Queen on the brink of sanity has no one to rely on except the Wyr warrior whose conviction is every bit as strong as his passion.

In order to save his friend's life, Wyr sentinel Rune Ainissesthai made a bargain with Vampyre Queen Carling—without knowing what she would ask from him in return. But when Rune attempts to make good on h...more

Definitely better than book 2 which bored me a bit. This one had a nice beginning and amazing development, but then it got stuck with a boring-to-tears ending. Things were getting better and better and I really thought I would end up loving the book, but then the ending went ALL WRONG!

WHY did it go wrong?
I love strong and capable main characters more than any other type. I just adore to see a character who is able to ACHIEVE whatever he/she wants because he is powerful enough to fight w...more

Original, good PNR with very good world building. I liked seeing characters again from the earlier books. After the last book when we met Carling, I was worried if I would like her in this one. She seemed pretty icy/remote when we met her previously. However as I saw more sides of her in Serpent's Kiss, she grew on me. Even though she's uber powerful, she's also caring, smart, hardworking, shows some humor, etc. Rune was good as the lead hero...funny, powerful, smart, hot, etc. I liked how their...more

The Series Predicament

I may be the only one out there who says this-but I loved this book as much as the previous books in the series. For me, the problem with series is most often about books being all so similar they get...boring? Or something like that. Here the main problem, and the prevailing opinion is that the books after Dragon Bound weren't as good. Different maybe. Less focused on romance, sure. But, I think we forget while comparing, these are some pretty awesome books. I lo...more

More than 5 stars and Top Read 2012.

I think I know reasons why readers will find this book hard to understand, and too slow for them. Because like Rune Ainissesthai ( very difficult to pronounce and write, huff!), Serpent's Kiss is a book that full of riddle. Waiting its mysteries to be solved. (I sound like Sherlock Holmes here, hmm).

The event of Serpent's Kiss is continue from Storm's Heart. Because Rune make pact with Vampyre's Queen (or ex-Queen) that also a witch, Carling Severan, to save T...more

I believe my last status update says it all: This book is a brick wall I just kept throwing myself at.

Until one of my friends sacrificed herself and finished the book. The crazy train not only left the station, it derailed at WTF-ville apparently. I'll still read the next book, but unless it's just as amazing as Dragon Bound, I'm going to have to drop this series and weep for what could have been.

When I find an author I enjoy, I have a tendency to go from book to book, glutting myself on their entire catalog. This can be good and bad. It's great to immerse myself in a style I enjoy, but when I think about rating or evaluating the book, my scale is skewed towards rating in comparison to other books by that author. Thea Harrison's Elder Races novels are my current addiction, I no sooner put down one than I'm anxiously anticipating the next. SERPENT'S KISS is a bright spot in an already won...more

Not sure why but this one was a struggle for me. It didn't grab my attention and I forced myself to carry on. I'm not convinced that it was the book itself but perhaps me instead. I just found myself wanting to do other things instead of read. *gasp* I must admit to wanting to know the outcome and that is why I kept going.

This is the third novel in the Elder Races series and Rune's story, with the Vampyre Queen Carling as his love interest.

I do think this is a much better book than the travesty that was Storm's Heart, but it is nowhere near as good as Dragon Bound. It was okay.

Hands down the best thing about the book was the heroine, Carling. I liked exploring her backstory and her motivations for her actions. She was also a strong, likable character. I did not like Carling from the previous books, but I am sur...more

(Elder Races # 3)

Reviewed for Under The Covers Blog

I have to say that I am addicted to Thea Harrison's Elder Races World. It is a phenomenal world of Wyr kind, Elves, Fae, Demons, Monsters, Vampires and Witches. Thea Harrison did not disappoint. I was sucked in this original and intense world she has created.

I honestly was afraid to rate this book because I thought I may be biased. See, I attended a lunch get-together with Ms. Harrison on the day this book was rel...more

Thea Harrison's Elder Races novels are my current addiction, I no sooner put down one than I'm anxiously anticipating the next. SERPENT'S KISS is a bright spot in an already wonderful series, and I'll be able to fill some of the months before ORACLE'S MOON comes out in March by mulling over this magic and these characters.

The world building in SERPENT'S KISS is ambitious, delving into the mythology of gryphons and vampires, the history of Carling's origins, and the politics of her present day po...more

We first met Carling in Storm’s Heart as she earned a favor from Rune in return for saving Tiago’s life. It’s time to pay up and Serpent’s Kiss picks up fairly soon after the events of Storm’s Heart with Carling summoning Rune to collect on her favor. Dragos is pissed. Rune, being his First sentinel, has just promised basically anything that Carling could want, and could be gone for years upon years fulfilling this one obligation. Rune’s a pretty laid bac...more

This is my least favorite of the series and the pairing between Rune and Carling just didn't do it for me. I never found the character Carling to be all that interesting. Compared to the heroines in the last two novels, Carling is rather bland. The one scene that stood out for me, and not in a good way, was when Rune was trying to change the way that Carling dresses. Am I the only one who took offense at this? It was just so patronizing. He was hand picking everything from her underwear to her s...more

It was not what I was expecting, so much so that I put it down for a few days. However, after I adjusted, I really liked it. This is very different than the first two books, quite cerebral with discussions of blood pathogens and time traveling, etc and A LOT less action. Still when you settle into it, there is a quiet beauty and strength in Carling and Rune's love story. That part made the whole book. However, there were too many loose ends. Where do we go from here? Oh the Author had a good ending, but left SO much unsettled... because there is NO WAY that such strong, powerful, and dynamic characters would be left living like this...no matter how much they "loved one another".

I LOVE this series, and I LOVE this Author's writing, and characters... but, just a 'pet peeve' of mine .... once a story is written.. we never hear what happens to them!

.... that is why the "Night Huntress Series" and the "Kate Daniels Series" are so attractive to me in the PNR genre...more

Sadly, it's easy to be perfunctory when you like a book. I break into a cold sweat just thinking about writing reviews of the books I like, let alone love. Platitudes often make for tepid reviews. But that is not the case here. A Serpent's Kiss, as they say in the South African click language Xhosa -- le ncwadi imbi -- loosely translated, "This book is bad."

It should be stated outright that I have not read the book entirely. I know. I know. But I swam halfway up tha...more

Once again, everyone and their mother has reviewed SERPENT'S KISS. And, I know that nothing I'm going to say is going to stop you from reading this book, right? So, I'm just going to give you my impressions while I read instead of boring you to death with plot points.

SERPENT'S KISS had a slow start. However, if you're familiar with my opinions, you'll know that I believe all of Ms. Harrison's novels have a slow start. I'm becoming somewhat familiar with her books going like this . . . . yada, ya...more

Rune is a great character but the pacing is so frustratingly off kilter I am not sure I can finish it.

I did a lot of fast forwarding. This book suffers mightily in comparison to the other three - really a shame because Rune is a spectacular hero. The first half is talkytalkytalky and NOTHING HAPPENS. When the plot finally starts moving along it's not very interesting and far from the scintillating stuff I expect from a paranormal series about powerful immortals. Morose and mopey "Leaf me alone....more

For some reason, this story grabbed me and I was incredibly invested. I have enjoyed the other two books in the series so far, so I don't know why I was almost surprised by this. Rune and Carling's journey was incredible! I loved watching Rune fall for each part of Carling over time, literally. Their situation was so desperate and yet they couldn't help their feelings. I wanted more in the end, but that isn't really a surprise. But I wasn't completely sure the situation reached a satis...more

Oh, Rune! How do I love thee? Enough to overlook your appalling dress sense, certainly.
Ahem. Sorry, this is meant to be a book review, not a hero review. Although... No, never mind. I admit that, when I heard who Rune's heroine was going to be, I was a trifle disappointed. I can't explain why exactly, but it's probably due to the fact that I tend to dislike world-weary been-there-done-that heroines. I should have known better. I should...more

5+ stars!

Thea Harrison is, IMO, a ridiculously good writer. The world she has created in her Elder Races novels is a richly detailed vista, complete with stunning imagery and complex characters. In Serpent's Kiss, we are treated to Rune (the first sentinel to Dragos) and Carling's (the former Vampyre queen and currently a councilor to the UN of the Elder races) story. Theirs began in Storm's Heart, where Rune and Carling share a moment as she exits the river after bathing and then later when Ru...more

Rune is the second in command to the Wyr Lord. He has many duties and responsibility, but still Rune likes to stay light hearted and easy going. That all changed after spending some time around the powerfully vampire, Carling . He became restless and irritable. Knowing he needed to end this attitude he went to her to complete his debt he owed her for saving his friends life. But once he got there and found out she was dying, and he knew right away he could never leave her. Even though he chose t...more

Serpent’s Kiss is the third book in Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series. I adored the first book. I really enjoyed the second book. I loved this book. Thea’s writing is so solid, her world so well constructed, her characters so darned likable, it’s almost impossible not to think these books are simply wonderful.

Thea Harrison is now officially one of my favourite authors.

The Elder Races is an addictive series of books featuring strong world building, hot alpha-males and no-nonsense kick-ass heroines. I particularly liked this book because of the (view spoiler)[mystery about Carling's "episodes" and the time-travel aspect of these and how the outcome somehow explained her actions early in the book. (hide spoiler)]. Very clever execution of that.

Further, hot smexy times, naturally, and action. Not a dull...more

I enjoy this narrator but I'm wondering about the heroine for this one? She seemed so detached / unfeeling in the last book that it will be interesting to see her turned into a heroine.

I loved the book, the story, the characters! I loved it all.

The 2 things that stayed with me though are:
1. Rune has so many sides I don't think I can ever keep up with them: he's and alpha, but at the same time he love chick flicks and woman's clothing(not only off I mean :D). He really is what his name says he is: an enigma.
2. Khalid, the Djin has such a way with words... The most memorable one is:

I read this series completely out of order; although I enjoyed each book, I would have appreciated the character development and nuances if I had read the books in order. Having read this book before the second book, I was not able to immediately appreciate the author's long-range plot development. As a full body of work, Thea Harrison's series is very complex and the books interlock well without taking away from each set of characters' individual stories. Like all the books in the series this b...more

This book fell flat with me. Rune had such promise as a leading man and there was just no appeal for me. Carling's personality transformation was so unbelievable and abrupt is was comical. The connection between a disconnect to me.

The plot wasn't nearly as smooth or forward moving as the two previous books (which I gave 5-stars to), so the ending held all the good action but one of the most devastating (to me) events was blew through and didn't make sense in many ways. (view spoiler)[Rune and Dr...more

Ugh... what can I say about this book? I slogged through it. That's about it. It was so incredibly boring and took me a long time to muddle through. Nothing happened!!! Nothing. I think the author writes amazing characters. She can craft some heroes and heroines a reader can get behind. But she doesn't know what to do with them. There was no conflict in this book. There was always this threat that Carling was going to die, but I never once felt she was going. I was never worried she was because...more

Happy to confirm that Thea Harrison is able to write distinct characters! Carling could not be less like the heroine of Dragon Bound and Rune is pretty unlike its hero.

(Although for a vampire queen and immortal elemental griffon who are thousands of years old, these characters had all the emotional maturity of middle-aged people. Which is okay, really, since I would probably find immortals somewhat unrelateable; just an observation.)

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can...more
