If we all would write down all the bad stuff that happened in our lives, we would all have books. The only difference is that Brenda is the wife of a former NFL Quarterback. As tough as her life was, I felt she was using the book to make people feel sorry for her so she could mend the relationships she screwed up. The only reason I give it high marks is because I am a sucker for taking a look into other people's lives. Plus, it made me feel my life sucks a little less.

I did find Brenda Warner's memoir to be a bit whiny in some parts, part CYA and passive apologies to family members she may have hurt in the past, and rushed at the end, overall I enjoyed the book. She has had some serious heartache to deal with in her life. The book focuses more on her life in the pre-Rams era, so anything Rams and after feels rushed.

However, I *completely* identified with her on page 140, as I have gone through a marital breakdown while pregnant and I felt she expressed my tho...more

Brenda was born in a close-knit family short on money, but long on love. From an early age she sought to be noticed and loved to dance for her relatives. They applauded her performances, and occasionally even joked she “looked like a stripper.” Although she had no idea what a stripper was, she realized they must attract attention. Later when kids in her church were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, Brenda said, “I want to be a preacher . . . or a stripper.” After her family saw a m...more

Brenda Warner is a woman who doesn’t know the meaning of “quit”. And it’s a good thing, because she’s had plenty of opportunities in life to give up. As I read One Call Away, I was amazed at Brenda’s determination and persistence when life gave her nothing but lemons.

Her training as a Marine and headstrong DNA, prepared her for the tragedies that life had in store. Her faith in God motivated her to keep fighting life through in spite of insurmountable circumstances. And her love for Kurt Warner...more

It would be hard to read Brenda Warner's memoir and not find at least one challenge in her life that you do not identify with. I am amazed at how candidly she writes of her emotions through each event. So often, people who don't understand what you're dealing with look at you like you have two heads when you're honest about how you're feeling. I genuinely appreciate the sheer honesty in this book. While reading, it was as if an old friend was just sharing stories from her life.

When it came to writing this review, I have been procrastinating. For what this woman has been through, I do not want to be another thorn in her side, but I truly did not like the person that Brenda Warner was putting forth.

By mid-book, I was fed up with her self-involved selfishness. Me, me, me, I, I, I, me, me, me. You have to do everything her way. You had to have her faith, you had to agree with her priorities, and you had to stop everything you were doing to comfort her. Geez, she was rais...more

Small extract of the blurb from Goodreads

The remarkable story of Brenda Warner's resilient faith in the face of the unpredictable, both before and during her marriage to NFL quarterback Kurt Warner.

My Review

Can I just say don't read the blurb as it tells you a lot of spoilers and I have recently stopped reading them when doing these kind of reviews as the spoilers are huge!

This is Brenda's story about her life and how she started out and got to where she is now. From heartbreak, family crisis, d...more

Life can change in an instant or in just "One Call Away."

Brenda Warner shares her life story with us through all it's ups and downs and how she has maintained her faith in the Lord through it all. From growing up on a farm in the heartland with financially struggling parents, to walking the red carpet with her husband, a NFL superstar, and being thrust into the limelight, she has faced many personal tragedies that has made her a very strong and courageous woman. I bought this book after hearing Brenda speak at a Women of Faith conference in Philadelphia. I had not heard of her before and honestly didn't know of her husband either. I don't follow football and I must have missed Dancing with the Stars that season. I saw their son, Zack, onstage at Women of Faith and he was the reason I bought the book. I wanted to know more.

At times, I was thinking she is a little whiny and demanding, but she put it all out there...the good, the bad, and the ugly, or shou...more

Brenda Warner initially suffered through much adversity in her life. She has not always been married to a former NFL professional football player. While always looking after her children and trying to scrape together enough money to pay her bills and keep her faith in tact, she solidly stood her ground to be a hardworking, respectable person that held her head high regardless of the situations she faced repeatedly. When Kurt Warner caught her eye, it was years before they would marry and begin t...more

This book was different from the way most Christian books are written. I enjoyed how Brenda overcame all the obstacles throughout her life. I found it refreshing that Warner was not perfect, she made mistakes, and she admits that. Most Christian books are not going to tell you that the author yelled at a fan, or acted angry, even though no Christians are perfect, most books with a Faith background try to tell you how to do things. Brenda Warner says here is what I did, and here is how I changed...more

A must read! Couldn't put it down! A mother of seven children, a registered nurse and a former marine, Brenda Warner shares her incredible lifes journey up to this point through ups and downs, hardships and loss, and more trials and tribulations than most of us can imagine. Her openess, honesty, willingness to bare some of the most intimate details of her life, and her struggles and fears while overcoming many obstacles is amazing and inspiring. Her strength and her unshable faith in the face of...more

After volunteering at the Women of Faith conference and hearing Brenda Warner's heart-wrenching story, I wanted to read her memoir, One Call Away: Facing the Unexpected With Resilient Faith. From the first chapter, I could not put the book down! Brenda Warner transparently shares her life-changing events, which began as unexpected calls. As her life unravels right before her eyes, she is forced to choose whether she will crumble in despair or trust God in the midst of darkness.

I really really enjoyed this book!! I am not a sports fan, especially football! But I watched Kurt Warner on DWTS and was impressed by his Christian faith and his gentlemanly behaviour. So of course I had to read this book ;) now I don't think Brenda and I would be good friends, she seems to be my opposite in all ways, but I could really 'get' her in this book. She didn't hide anything, she was blunt about her past wrongs and while so many Christians seem to want to bury their mistakes Brenda s...more

This is a nicely written book by Brenda Warner. She talks about the good times in her life to the bad times. No matter what happens, she get's through it. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Brenda has as been through a lot in her life! She had a special needs child, has been divorced, has been on food stamps, had her parents die, and married an NFL quarterback.

Her story also tells that things don't always turn out how you wanted them. That sometimes you have to deal with something that you did...more

I simply did not want to put this book down. And, it had nothing to do with me being a Rams fan. This book takes you through the tragedies (and yes, there were real tragedies) and the triumphs of Brenda's life. Brenda's life is completely faith based, but never once did I feel like she was pushing her beliefs on me. It simply is who she is and she couldn't tell her story without it. I only knew of the Brenda who is Kurt Warner's wife. This is Brenda, the person, who hit some real lows that many...more

Once you start reading the first chapter of this book, you are hooked. Brenda Warner starts her memoir with the tragic story of her son Zach, and what happened to him when he was merely 4 months old. You are immediately left wondering how and why and what happens next... answers she gives you as the her story continues. However, beyond the explanation of what happens, what is more important are the lessons that she learned, and most importantly, that "God...more

After seeing Brenda speak at a conference, I was deeply moved. A close family member has a disability and knowing her & Zack's story really struck a chord. What an inspiration about thriving despite challenges.

You'll read this book, thinking "oh my gosh, what MORE could happen"...and then you'll be further shocked.

This book pulled me in instantly and supported my belief of getting through the time times with family, friends, and faith.

One Call Away is a fairly honest memoir of Brenda Warner. Her somewhat fairytale story is told conversationally and draws you in immediately. While the book is marketed towards the Christian/religion, I found it to be rather engaging without being overly religious.

Warner managed to maintain an upbeat attitude through it all - from the darkest hours through her fantastical marriage to former NFL star Kurt Warner.

My resolution is to read more on my time, which equals right before bed when I should be sleeping, and to read more of what I WANT to read. Found this browsing the shelf and love it so far. I enjoyed their first book and this is more of Brenda's story.

The beginning was more detailed than her life after marrying Kurt, probably due to having the other book. I would have liked more of the more present stuff.
Christine
I heard Brenda Warner speak at a Women of faith conference, so I was looking forward to reading the book. Unfortunately, I found her to be whiny, self-absorbed and more concerned with her looks than her character. She wrote alot about being a strong Christian, but her actions didn't back that up. I kept waiting for her to talk about how God worked in her life and never got it.

I found her extremely unlikable throughout the book. I would like to hope that she just came across wrong. However, she had to have had final approval. She seems to never be happy enough with what others do for her while always patting herself on the back for doing everything right. Disappointed to say the least.

A wonderful, uplifting story. Just looking at the pretty picture of Brenda Warner, one might suspect that she had an easy life, but that was not the case. She overcame so many tragedies and continued her faith in God. Great story!

I heard Brenda speak at a Women of Faith event. Since I was a fan of Kurt Warner and I liked her story, I decided to read her book. She went from using food stamps to being a millionaire and still had the faith in God to get their large family through the ups and downs of a NFL player. Good story.
Lisa
I really enjoyed this book. After reading her previous book written with her husband Kurt Warner, I expected a lot of the same things, but I felt like this was a more personal reading of Brenda and her faith in God.
Kim
This was an incredible story. I can't imagine going through all that she has. I read it in one day. I just couldn't put it down. I am so glad the ending to this part of her story is as happy as it is.
