Oh, gosh. I really cannot understand all the good reviews for this book (even if half of them were given BEFORE the book actually came out, which, if you ask me, is completely stupid). To say it's overrated is an understatement.

This book is such a huge disappointment. I guess this is a typical example of what happens when you fantasize so much about something that you've actually built up this ideal in your mind... which has nothing to do with reality, sadly. Careful people, spoilers ahead.

Here's the thing. I think Stephanie Perkins is in my head. Or at least my daydreams. How else could she consistently write characters that seem to be tailor-made to hit my flutter buttons? Etienne for my anglophilia, Max for my tattooed, Buddy Holly glasses wearing (view spoiler) rocker boy, and Cricket. Cricket for everything I've ever wanted in a real boy.

Because that's the beauty of Lola and the Boy Next Door. It's real. As much as I loved Anna and the French Kiss (and I looooooooooooooooooooove Anna), Lola was better on nearly every level because it felt real. Anna was by no means a fairy tale without the struggle of realism, but there were some elements that took it to daydream level. Paris. Beautiful, charming British boy. The big, dramatic (incredibly swoontastic) ending.

Lola is different. They aren't in Paris, and Cricket isn't a dashing, gorgeous Brit. He's just a normal boy. A normal, awkward, amazingly sweet boy who I can't even find words to describe. (Except for, you know, those...)

I won't say anything about the story itself, except Stephanie Perkins manages to surprise me with the depth she gives her characters and their circumstances. Lola made me ache; I went through each moment of impulse, confusion, and agonizing indecision with her. I laughed with her, I certainly cried with her more than I expected to, and I swooned so hard that by the last section I was literally reading standing up because I was FEELING TOO MANY FEELINGS to sit.

Lola and the Boy Next Door is everything first love should be--painful, awkward, desperate, tender and so, so sweet.

And as I read Perkins' acknowledgements at the end, I found myself tearing up again at her note to her husband. I realized why she is able to write such amazingly real and heartfelt love stories. It's because she's lived it.

As Cricket slowly worms his was back into her life - and into her heart - Lola will have to learn how to be honest with herself - and she will learn it the hard way.

I'll admit I had high expectations for this book and while it's certainly enjoyable and relaxing, it failed to deliver repeatedly for me.
Whereas Anna's story, while still being fluffy, was more believable, less shallow and more charming, Lola's story was definitely more clichéd, more puerile and felt forced in more than one occasion.

The most striking example of this "forcedness" is Max.
I didn't like how he first gets presented as an awesome boyfriend and then, quite conveniently, ends up being the asshole in a total unreasonable way. It was done unreasonably and felt so contrived, that when he does become an asshole and I was supposed to despise him I just couldn't bring myself to and I still liked him from before!

I wonder if it all has to do with the fact that the 5 years of difference in age between Lola and Max are taken as a big NO NO right from the start, because frankly, I didn't buy it. I had a 22 years old boyfriend when I was 17 and it was NOT a big deal. But, since it's taken for granted here that Max is too old for Lola, let's just make him the EVIL guy. The way the author deals with his character royally pissed me off. It wasn't smooth AT ALL.
But the same goes for the other characters: basically, they were just too black or white, they lacked depth and originality: Cricket was just too damn good for his own sake, Max too damn bad (kind of in a beautiful and damned way), Lola too damn in self denial: what she says to Max when she goes to his apartment? So not cool, girl. My eye was twitching madly during that passage.

Still, it's a book I'd recommend if you're looking for something quite readable and relaxing AND you loved Anna. Perkins certainly knows how to write a story and make her dialogues interesting. It's a colorful book, as colorful as its cover, despite the psycho-looking girl there.
I just wish there had been a little more to it, a bit more substance. Anna was definitely more fun for me. (less)

Oh, that awkward moment when everybody loves a book and you don't understand why... You know that feeling, right? Well, yeah, I'm pretty much living it.

Thanks God there are no dislike buttons on GoodReads because I would have won the lottery with those.
It's not that I DIDN'T LIKE the book, it's just that I didn't LIKE it.. Does it make any sense to you, because for me there is a whole damn big difference.

Stephanie Perkins, you just made it to my favorite authors list. I wanted to put you there before, but I thought there was a chance that the brilliance of Anna and the French Kiss might have been a fluke. About the Audiobook:

I actually really liked the reader for this book, which is a rarity, I hardly ever like girl readers. I'm not sure why I don't care for them, I think their voices just usually get on my nerves. But I thought Shannon McManus did a great job and she actually sounded like I would imagine Lola sounding! So if you like audiobooks (or even if you don't) I would definitely recommend this one!

The Book:

Who knew I could fall in love with a boy named Cricket?? I just finished this book, and my chest aches with that feeling....you know the one.....the one where you'll just die if they don't kiss already! Yeah...that one!

I didn't start out loving this book as much as Anna and the French Kiss. I had a hard time connecting with Lola at first. I do NOT like it when girls lie about their age so that guys will date them. I think this is SO wrong, so Lola kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Plus, her choice in boyfriend just....well....I don't care for any guy that smells like smoke, let alone pot, so that was strike two. But as I got to know her, and realized that there were definitely reasons that she was making these choices, Lola started to grow on me. There's just something about Lola. I love her more-ness! More sparkles, more colors, more make-up, more hair, more personality....she just has MORE. I think I would have way too much fun being friends with her.

All of the characters were so fully fleshed out in this book. I knew Anna and St. Clair were going to make an appearance, but I didn't realize they'd play such a big role. I love seeing them again. As far as the others go, I don't think there was one character that was mentioned that I didn't end up feeling like I really knew. From Lola's fantastic friend, Lindsey, who is always there for her, to Lola's two dads, who bake pies, force Sunday brunch on Lola's boyfriend, and go into attack mode if they find a boy in Lola's room, to her homeless biological mother, who makes it hard for Lola to really feel loved and wanted, to her boyfriend, Max, who may....or may NOT be "the one," to her neighbor Calliope, a figure-skating, Olympic hopeful, and even Heaven's to Betsy, Lola's dog, they each found a way into my heart. Yes, even Max....kinda.

Then there was Cricket. I mean, really....Cricket? Naming a character Cricket is like a challenge. You're starting off at a negative on the manly scale, and you've got to get to at least a plus seven to make me happy! How are you gonna pull that off? Well, if you want lessons, talk to Stephanie Perkins, because by the time this book was over, I would have handed Cricket my heart on a silver platter. He wouldn't have even had to steal it! Manly scale? What manly scale? This guy was off the charts! The writing on his hands, his pants, his hair, the way he loves to invent things that have no meaning, but mean so much, how much he loves and supports his sister, the way he aches for Lola and what he let slip away. I just love him!! You couldn't tell, could you?

One thing I really loved was the contrast between Lola's relationship with Max, her rocker boyfriend, and her relationship with Cricket. Lola and Max's relationship is on overdrive. Instead of connecting on an emotional level, they connect on a physical level, and things get hot an heavy quickly. But when Cricket moves back in town, old feelings start to resurface, and soon Lola starts questioning what she really wants. The developing relationship with Cricket is so subtle and slow and unsure, but the emotions and the tension and the deep meaningful feelings they have for each other are so much more intense. All it takes is a brush of the hand to make me melt. It just really showed how it isn't sex that "sells," it's love (and some serious freaking tension!!)

Speaking of tension....this book is FULL OF IT! I'm beginning to think that Stephanie enjoys ripping my heart out and tearing it into pieces, only to put it back better than new. My chest seriously ached for Lola and Cricket to find a way to reconnect. I feel like I could go ON and ON!! Oh, wait, I already have.

Ok, if you haven't gotten the point by now, I loved this book. It was funny, and witty, and emotionally gut-wrenching, and fabulous, and sparkly! Stephanie Perkins has done it again. After reading Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door, you can be assured that I will buy anything that this woman writes.

Yay for warm fuzzies. Stephanie Perkins has a talent and that talent is for making me happy, allowing me to enjoy the entire reading experience, laugh at times and come away with no deep sense of revelation - just the knowledge that I will have to get my hands on whatever she writes next. Her writing may be light and mostly meaningless but it achieves one of the greatest things a book possibly can: fun.

First off, I LOVED Anna and the French Kiss. It has a great plot, great location, great boarding school, fun characters, a great boy, but most importantly Anna is a great character. However, I was disappointed with Lola and the Boy Next Door.My main problem with this book is its namesake, Lola. She is a flat out liar. She lied to her parents, her friend Lindsey, both boys in her life, and to herself. Also, I seriously love fashion and think it's fun to change your style. I just felt Lola's fashion sense is forced throughout the book. It's there to show that she's different and quirky. However, it made her appear shallow and attention-seeking.

My second problem with this books is how fixated these girls are with their boyfriends. Trust me, I LOVE romance and I married my high school sweetheart. However, we never lost sight that life exists outside of our relationship. It's healthy and normal NOT to see each other every waking moment and to have separate interests. It shows independence and security in your relationship. But, in this book it appears that to be a happy couple you can't leave each other's side. You must be around 24/7 and talk about your love interest ALL the time to EVERYONE around you. I saw glimpses of this in Anna but it was easier to overlook than it is in Lola. I didn't even like Anna and St. Clair as much in this book because they are so ridiculously stuck on each other. I just worry that this reinforces the idea that if you are girl without a boyfriend life just isn't worth it. Friendships are important things to build as a teenager and they teach you so much about relationships. Friends are all but forgotten in both Anna and Lola actually. Your boyfriend is way more important.

Also, I really liked Cricket Bell. I didn't think what he "did" to Lola was that horrible. Sure, I understand why she was hurt but the utter devastation on Lola's part was a little extreme. He is obviously a nice guy and had reasons for doing what he did. I loved that he was an inventor and had awesome taste in clothes. Sometimes I felt he was a little to good for Lola.

Overall, there are some things that I liked. I liked Cricket, Lola's dads, and Lindsey. I thought Perkins did a nice job of capturing the essence of San Francisco. I just couldn't overlook my disappointment in Lola and her relationships with Max and Cricket. She is just not a person I would want to be around. I actually hate to say this because I really like Perkins. I will read her next book, and I hope the relationships are more realistic. (less)

But most of all, I love you Stephanie Perkins. You're brilliant and your characters are my best-friends.

Her books make me unashamed to behave in this completely atrocious fangirl-y way. I love them! I devour them whole. They are a joy to read and I won't ever stop doing so.

Contemporary romance has a new queen and her name is Stephanie Perkins. She masterfully concocted swoons in Anna And The French Kiss and manages to kick it up a notch in Lola And The Boy Next Door.

A lovely comfort read to curl up with, but sometimes the characters' quirkiness felt a bit forced. For me, it's no Anna, but I still enjoyed it.

The warm, fuzzy feelings associated with Anna and the French Kiss are almost hard to replicate, but Stephanie Perkins did a fantastic job with this companion novel, delivering something just as entertaining and light as Anna, but in a completely new vein entirely. The characters are quirkier, geekier, and the romance a touch more complicated. If anything, I enjoyed this a fraction more than Anna as it was easier to relate to...more

I listened to the audio narration done of this novel and it was well done. But the story just fell mostly flat for me, even though there were peaks of the story that I really liked. I enjoyed the first 1/3 of Lola and I think this story would have made a decent novella, I don't think there is enough storyline to fill an entire book, however. I found it hard to always sympathize with or understand why Lola was so upset. I just didn't think her parent situation was that upsetting. But, other thing...more
