An Accidental Mother, a memoir, is the debut of Katherine Anne Kindred. It chronicles her six-year journey as an accidental mother, a role that was totally unexpected and affected her in ways she could never imagine.

After a miscarriage and subsequent divorce, Ms. Kindred gives up on the idea of having children. She hasn't given up on the idea of romance, though and anticipates the future according to her own particular version of it. As she approaches middle age, she knows she's likely to meet m...more

When Kate Kindred fell in love with Jim, she did not plan on falling in love with his little boy, too. Kate had planned on a childless life. But life and love don’t always fit into plans the way one imagines.

Jim had custody of little two year old Michael. A year earlier Jim had received a call informing him that Michael’s mother had lost custody of him. Jim had not even known of Michael’s existence, but was now awarded full custody. In addition to Michael, Jim had joint custody of a little girl,...more

This was a very enjoyable book and so easy to read. I feel like every mother I know has this type of book within her. You can tell how much she loved Michael in the way she tells the stories and you feel a connection between her and Michael. My only qualm was that the summary implies that the story covers more of the post-break-up feelings and that you will follow her through her journey of coping with the loss, but instead it is a compendium of happy memories (and there's nothing wrong with tha...more

This is the author's first book and includes illustrations that Michael had made for her. It tells the story of how she became a mother for the first time to a young boy, who she grew to love as her own. She was with him for six years until she and Jim broke up and he would no longer let her see or talk to Michael, saying it was confusing him. It is a very sad thing to love someone and then not be able to be a part of their lives anymore, and I'm sure it leaves the children feeling like they are...more

An Accidental Mother by Katherine Anne Kindred is the story of a mother's love that was never meant to be. Kate Kindred had experienced two failed marriages that led her to the decision to have a tubal ligation, ending her chances of becoming a mother. She determined that she didn't have the maternal gene until she fell in love with Jim, a cop who was in the process of a bitter custody battle over infant Elizabeth with his ex-wife when he discovered that he was also the father of two-year-old Mi...more

This beautiful memoir details an aspect of blended families that I hadn't ever considered before - what happens to a step-parent following the break up of the blended family. Kate Kindred had given up on relationships after a failed marriage when she unexpectedly met and fell in love with Jim. Jim had custody of a young son, Michael, from his own previous marriage. Kate hadn't planned on children, but fell in love with Michael as well and the family spent six years living together, with Kate rai...more

The author shares the joys and sorrows of raising someone else's child when she and Jim move in together. In "An Accidental Mother" Kate shares her special moments with Jim's children, even illustrating them with notes and pictures. When her relationship with Jim ends, he makes sure that all contact with Kate ends. Ultimately, the children and Kate are the losers.

This was a quick read but I felt it was written as an explanation to the children as to what happened. Predictable.

A quick read, and a sweet one, though from the beginning you're dreading the sad ending, where the author is separated from her stepson after helping raise him for six years. I hope her ex boyfriend gets poked in the ass with hot pokers - he deserves it.

A quick easy read. I enjoyed the writing and could really feel the love this woman had for her "step" son. But I almost would say I hated the book, b/c I hated the way it ended. I hope at some point, she gets to have a relationship with this child.

I would actually put 3.5 if it was possible. Sweet-bittersweet book, I really enjoyed it. For those who are already mothers, it may be less interesting.
Jennifer
A memoir written in diary/journal form, the book left me sad for Michael.

I won this book from GOOD READS ...
I am not sorry I read it ... it was a good book, but I found it a lot like the book S**T MY DAD SAYS, but from a mother ... little boy point of life.
Laura
This was a sweet and sad story, but I felt like it read more like a blog than a book. It felt like the purpose was mostly a love letter for Michael, so that he'd know his "accidental mother" didn't choose to stop seeing him.

Very moving. Have scoured the Internet for updates on Kate but to no avail.

My book club also enjoyed.
