WTF? Is this the same series I discovered from a self-published author who could write, had a voice, a story to tell, and vivid characters you could invest in? I forced myself to finish knowing how much I liked first volumes, that there was more in the series and thinking surely it could not keep on being so relentlessly bad. Take all the negative reviews by others and quote 'em here cause I agree.

Another great one! The end is unbelievable!!!!! Can't wait to start the next! This one is an emotional rollercoaster ride between Rand and Sinjin.

This series, interestingly enough gets worse with time. The first novel wasn't terrible, had a few flaws, most notably the strange way the book ended, like they were at work or something and the clock hit 5 and everyone just stopped in the middle of what they were doing. Anyway, back on topic, the book is what you'd call very meta, it dialogue is oddly straight and to the point and feels plastic, nothing is what you could actually see two people having a conversation about.

... what did I think? ... I started thinking this plot was going somewhere, but just as I jumped off the L. K. Harrison train-wreck, I jumped on this one. Only it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. I think the only character I enjoy is Christa. Jolie has always been and will forever be weak, naive, and easily manipulated. Rand is OCD/ADD at the same time. If that is even possible. Sinjin is only out for himself and everytime Jolie mouths those words she follows it up with how incredibly hot he is...more
So I read the first 2 books thinking: wow this is actually pretty good. Im enjoying this. Lets see what happens next! (You know, all those really happy emotions you get when you are finally going to be able to read the next volume of a good series?).
What I wasn't expecting? To be disappointed . Because, seriously, this book was frustrating to say the least.
First of all, I feel like I was reading the 2nd book all over again - the prologue being the first few pages of the 2nd novel, and then re...more

First off let me say I love HP Mallory, I have read all of her books. I was so excited when she got a publishing deal and was going to have books in my book store, so I could get more people to read her. That being said, Witchful Thinking her latest book made me SO happy.
Ok, yes there is a lot of rehashing of things from her past books, but that is because if you are picking her up for the first time you want be lost. She writes this book in such a way you get sort of caught up in the past, alt...more

Jolie may possess a rare gift for reanimating the dead, but she doesn’t know the first thing about governing disparate factions of supernatural creatures. When I first received this book from the publisher earlier this year, I tried several times to get into it. I would struggle through the first chapter or two and think….’What the heck is going on?’ After months of lugging it around in my suitcase during my travels I finally decided to buckle down and get rid of a few books; and one of those few books was Witchful Thinking by H.P. Mallory.
Now, I hate it. But I also love it when I can just pick up a random book and jump into the middle of a ser...more
Oh man... I wanted to give this one 4 stars just for the ending! Cannot wait for the next book to come out.
I'm really surprised by how much I'm into these books. The story is just so good and unique in the paranormal book world. Also, the author gives us a frustrating love story between Jolie and Rand... but she manages to give us occasional relief from the frustration of waiting for them to get together.

I do not know if I have been living under a rock, but where have all the witches gone? Have they been run out of the fantasy genre by werewolves, vampires, and other night bumplies? I had high hopes for Witchful Thinking – with a title so bubbly and clever, a cover so adorable, and hype that makes it sound beyond entertaining – but hex me silly, the story did not suck me in. I am not sure if it is because I started in the middle of Jolie’s charmed life or not finding any charm in her diary entri...more
***Some spoilers for those who have not read the first two books in the series***
First, I want to admit I was reluctant to buy this book. I had read Mallory's first two books (self-published) of the series and was concerned that the third book in the series, the first to be published mass-market, would wind up being a summary of the first two books, with a little added plot to make it necessary to read the book for the fourth in the series to make sense. Much to my relief, however, I was glad to...more

When is someone's style truly unique and and when is it simply good in some areas and lacking in others? I think Mallory has some strong points in her writing that make it unique and fun: voice, plot outline, twists, character development. I think her work falls short a bit in believable continuity and plot execution, emotional content.
No work or writer is "perfect" though so you have to read a book and decide whether its strength...more

This one has a different feel to it. I'm not sure I'll be able to explain it properly but I'm sure going to try.
One thing I noticed about Jolie is that we're bringing up some freckles that I never really remember hearing about her before. I'm not sure if I missed it in the first two books or if it's something that's just popping up now.
Another thing that I'm not really liking is the diary entries. I feel like in her last book it was more subtle how they brought up the past book. Now with this on...more

POSSIBLE SPOILERS! I read the first two books. They weren't great, but interesting enough. Lots to pick apart, but still enough that I wanted to know where this story was going. Suffice to say, I liked them. Which is why I had given each of them 3 stars. But this book? This one? It had less action in it than the Twilight books! At least S Meyer threw some kind of battle, SOMETHING into them. (NO, I am not saying they were good) But this book was boring as hell! Between Jolie CONSTANTLY moaning a...more

Here's the thing: there are some good plot points here in terms of Jolie's placement in the Underworld, but the execution is sorely lacking.
All three books feature a romance that frustrates the hell out of me. Jolie is like a lovesick school girl who can't concentrate on anything but her One Twu Wuv...except for when she's leading on poor, crazed Sinjin. Now, I have a very narrow mindset when it comes to romantic portrayals, so I often just shelve my irritations in this area if the rest of...more

I got to the end of this one and said "Huh?" I soldiered through 312 repetitious pages of Jolie dithering and second guessing and third guessing herself only to reach a very inconclusive conclusion. This one had so many possibilities. The setting was great. The characters were varied and represented a wide-variety of paranormal species. The potential for a romantic triangle was there. But, ultimately, this one left me feeling flat.

Ok well ? Jolie swore off men twice now and honestly? It would have been best to keep her promises but alas, it doesn't happen. I was thinking she might have been better off with someone like ....Mercedes Berg, the Prophetess. Wouldn't that be a better match? pssh ya. I could picture them both taking over the Underworld together. Jolie being the Queen with Mercedes by her side ..c'mon. There is nothing stopping them.

Witchful Thinking is a terrific read. It also can stand alone if you haven't read the first two books in the Jolie Wilkins series. But if you love romance like I do, then I would definitely read the first two books. H.P. Mallory has penned a fantastic storyline with witches, fairies, werewolves, and vampires. There’s lots of humor, drama, and romance, too. I fell in love with Mallory's main character, Jolie, who’s a strong, independent woman with just enough sarcasm, and knows how to take care o...more
Okay, let's start off saying I REALLY enjoyed the first two books. Jolie was smart, funny, and on point. This book starts off with a whole other Jolie. This Jolie can't decide what's up from down and what's more she is the FRIG FRAGGIN' QUEEN of the underworld, but she's basically like," who cares about that? Rand or Sinjin?" She is so indecisive in this book that I almost put it down. I felt as though she never really gave Sinjin a chance and lead him along and then Rand didn't know he wanted e...more

Dear Diary: Why?
I'm sorry, I hated this one. Jolie sounds likey a whiney pre-pubescent moron. I loved the first two books, it felt like there was real growth in the main character in terms of confidence and personal strength. This book eradicated all that development. There was no action in this just a crapload of rehash and internal monologue. There was hardly any interaction amongst the characters (I don't want to hear in the character's thoughts that she talked to so...more

I won this one on first-reads and desperately wanted to give it a good review, but that's just not going to happen. I'm a big fan of urban fantasy and paranormal romance in general, and something about this book just doesn't quite do it for me. This book itself seems to be set outside modern society which generally isn't something I'm looking for.

If you are looking for a serious novel bereft of sexual tensions and somewhat frustrating plot development, this and the preceding books are probably not for you. However, this third book in the Jolie Wilkins series is a light and fun read with an enjoyable story and characters.
I have liked all of H P Mallory’s books; however, I did not enjoy this third novel as well as the others. Even after finishing the book and sort of understanding the author’s intent, a large portion of this book repeats i...more

I gave this book 3 stars last night, but upon waking the next day and thinking about this book, I decided to give it 2 stars (maybe even 1), because I'm irritated by most of the book, but mainly the ending. Reasons why?:
1. Half of the book is talking about the other 2.5 books. Yawn. Dear Author, I read your series, and I get the hints, innuendos, and I don't need Jolie's diary to spell out the plot for me. I felt like instead of rehashing what I already knew, you could have given us more info ab...more

I finished book one in the series, and immeadiately started texting my 'Sookie' friends, letting them know this series was a winner.
I finished book two, and even though the travel back in time bit was a stretch, and I wanted back at the battlefield already (finding myself just as anxious as Jolie herself), I enjoyed it.
Then there was 'Witchful Thinking'. I want to say I liked it. I still love Jolie, and Rand, a long with the entire cast of Underworld characters... But I feel like the whole of...more

I was part of a book tour for the first two books of H.P. Mallory's Dulcie O'Neill series, which I absolutely loved, so when I saw this book on Net Galley, I had to grab it. I haven't read the first two books, but because this book is published by a major publisher, there's a lot of back story so that new readers can pick things up.
I did just fine there, but I do want to read the first two books.

Witchful Thinking is book #3 in the “Jolie Wilkins series”. We meet up with the characters after the big underworlder war. Jolie has been declared queen but isn’t really sure how she feels about that or how it will affect her rather non-existant relationship with Rand.
I really didn’t like this book as much as the other two. It almost felt like H.P. Mallory didn’t have enough substance to really flesh out a full novel (there are a couple of rather lengthy flashbacks to previous novels). I enjoyed...more
