It is 1953, and the last great transcontinental air race from London to Christchurch is about to begin, but even before the KLM plane has left the runway, it has already become famous as the “bride flight” for its cargo of brides-to-be flying out to join their fiances on the other side of the world.

Among them are Ada, Marjorie and Esther, who all have their own reasons for

It begins with a plane race in 1953, one plane brought with it the brides from the Netherlands to join their fiances. I was a little young to remember this, but I asked some one a little older about this and he remembered it straight away. What fascinated me was that it was completed non stop for the travellers, the plane did stop for refuelling but as far as I remember the passengers only got off once for a 30 minute stretch and also a brief stop in Australia. If you have flown non stop from Ne ...more

A much more detailed view into the lives of three women and one mysterious cowboy. Found the comparison of youth to old age very compelling and of course, the young women beneath the old women were still alive and well. It was interesting to unravel odd behaviour to its source. Felt so badly for Frank. Also felt Ada came a long way, but not far enough. Poor Frank! Also, Marjorie still came across pretty insane despite her history. Esther I could understand, but Marjorie? I'm surprised with all ...more

Being a New Zealander I really enjoyed reading the fictional impression NZ had on the Dutch migrants in this book. Astute observations such as kiwi's obsession with "homemade" baking, which still generally exists today, made me laugh - especially when just recently I found myself saying that a bought carrot cake at a work do was "almost as good as homemade". Sadly the observations about the lack of life in ChCh is still true today - even more so after the earthquakes. But one thing that's change ...more

I found the background story of a group of young Dutch girls emigrating to New Zealand as part of a transcontinental air race in the 1950s really fascinating. Unfortunately I did not find the story itself so much fascinating as depressing and the characters mostly unlikeable or irritating. Disappointing.

Also, I found it difficult to overlook the fact that it contains not a single apostrophe (I kid you not!) and many of the sentences run into each other with missing punctuation, although this may

This novel places fictional characters on the historical ‘bride flight’ that KLM operated in the 1953 London to Christchurch air race. Ada, 18 and pregnant, has already been married by proxy to a severe young man she hardly knows; Marjorie is going to meet her fiancé Hans; Esther is meeting Leon – like her a survivor of the holocaust. The novel opens many decades later with the death of Frank, a single man on the flight with whom they have all formed some relationship. His death stirs memories f ...more

I loved every page of it. It's written so well, the characters felt like real women to me. During the whole story I felt as if I was standing there right beside them.

ROMANTIC. Loved the characters and story. It's the Dutch version of the NOTEBOOK.

Van der Pol uses the real life story of the last great continental air race, which took place from London to New Zealand in 1953, as the jumping off point for Bride Flight. It tells the story of three women who left post-war Holland for various reasons, all seeking new lives and (supposedly) planning to meet up with their respective fiancés in Christchurch. I found the story quite fluid and absorbing, though it did drag a little towards the end as some emotional climaxes or reveals were left for ...more

This book is by a Dutch author, written in Dutch and first published in 2007. The English translation seems quite serviceable. I first became aware of the story by seeing the motion picture adaptation, which was a Dutch film with the spoken dialogue in Dutch, so watching with subtitles was necessary. The story takes place in New Zealand, and the movie (which I highly recommend seeing) was filmed there --- a lot of the outdoor scenery in it is breathtakingly stunning. I was impressed with the fil ...more

I really liked this story a lot. I saw the movie first and discovered it came from a book. The book, of course, included so much more of the story. Highly recommend this book.

Superb acting in the 2007 movie. If the book is nearly as good, it'd be literature.

Trivia: they wrote the book after the movie?

First I must comment that the original book was in Dutch so I read the translated English version! This is a love story of three women who befriend a charming man name Frank and how the rest of their lives unfold from that meeting. The women come together at Frank's funeral. The story holds a secret pact, love and choices that seem impossible to have to choose. A wonderfully rich detailed story and delight to read! I gave five stars because I truly liked this story and and the characters, and th ...more

I saw the movie version of this book and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I went in search of the book.

The story is of three women that take the first flight from Amesterdam to New Zealand...and tells how their stories (along with Frank, a man with them on the trip) interlock and how they travel in and out of each other's lives until Frank's funeral (the beginning of the book).

I really enjoyed the book and the writing. I learned a lot about a migration of people that I had never heard about in the pa

I read this after seeing the movie version at the TCFF. Both equally good. A well done movie interpretation. Great story about the lives of 3 women and their relationship with a handsome man they meet on the Dutch flight to Australia where they were going to meet their military vet husbands to be.

A saga through the lives of three women and one man who linked them all. Not my usual type of book but I enjoyed the story.

Enjoyed it very much! Took me a bit to get into it but I am glad I did. Greta characters and I luv how Frank is the common denominator. These women are of great strength and character and it was a real pleasure to get to know them :)

Bride Flight is a compelling read, and a great example of historical fiction! The characters in this book are fictional, but the book is based on a real historical event- the 1953 commercial air race between London and New Zealand. The beginning and ending of this book were both intriguing and well thought out. This book is full of excitement, drama, and romance!

I watched this movie a while back and enjoyed it, so I wanted to read the book. I thought the book was a little bit richer than the movie, giving more backstory to the characters. And it made more sense how connected they really were. How Frank really changed each of their lives in such profound ways... which wasn't as apparent in the movie. Great read.
