4.5 starsIt's been two months since the nail-biting events of Hard Bitten, and Merit is still dealing with the fall-out from what occurred. As Cadogan House is investigated for mismanagement and blood rations keep everyone on edge, there's also trouble when Lake Michigan suddenly turns black and fingers are pointed at the vamps. Merit must work together with Jonah, the attractive captain of the guards at Grey House, to find out who's really responsible, even as she's haunted by dreams that she doesn't understand.

Merit has always been a strong, smart, and funny heroine, but her loyalty and her honor really come through in this particular book. We also get more kickass fight scenes, interesting political developments as a pending paranormal registration act causes tempers to flare, complicated problems with Merit's best friend Mallory, skies that turn ruby red, and tense run-ins with faeries and lake sirens. I also liked that Malik has stepped up in a stronger role at Cadogan, and how respect and trust and allegiance are, as always, big themes in this series.

But never mind all that--you want to know about Ethan! The sexy, green-eyed Master is never far from Merit's mind, and he casts a long shadow over all of the turmoil at Cadogan House. After the sucker punch dealt to fans in the last book, many of us worried about the direction that the series was taking. But most readers are going to be very, very satisfied with the way Merit deals with her feelings for Ethan as well as her reluctant attraction to Jonah. I am really happy that she finds the strength to come to terms with this very tricky situation, and every development in this story arc feels completely right and emotionally true.

I continue to be impressed by how Chloe Neill juggles a sizable cast of characters and all kinds of interesting subplots while moving Merit's personal story forward. There's no doubt at all that this series will continue to deliver the great stories and quality entertainment we've come to expect. And yeah, I gave an urban fantasy book 5 stars--what of it? Chicagoland has always been the cream of the crop for this genre, and Drink Deep is by far the best book in the series to date.

Well. My one-book-brief love affair with this series has certainly come to an end.

Why Drink Deep is the greatest disappointment of 2011:

1. Story = Filler. Until the very last 2 chapters or so, most of the story is pretty much nonexistent and it's apparent that Neill tried (and failed, I might add) to build up the suspense about what will become of Ethan, and the "story" part of the book was simply added out of obligation. Drink Deep is a hard book to review without issuing spoilers. Forgive me if this ends up on the vague side.

I bought the book at this week’s New York Comic Con, only realizing once I got home that I’d beat the general release by two weeks. Yay for publishers exhibiting at cons!

The last installment of Chicagoland Vamps left fans reeling. It was a game-changer, and although I wasn’t surprised by the events of that book, I was anxious to see how Neill would play things out.

Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that I did alot of crying. Again. It's been two month since the events of Hard Bitten, and Merit is grieving. But she is also Sentinal to the Cadogen House and it's a responsibility that she still holds dear. So slowly, she is trying to pull herself together enough to do her job. Jonah, the Captain of the Guards from Grey House, is there to help her. He's serving as makeshift partner, but there are hints he would like to be more.

Cadogen is in disarray. The big vampire council has sent someone to reorganize the House and it's clear the guy's not there to help, but to undermine everything Ethan has built. Still, Cadogen doesn't have much choice but to take it.

Merit is served up a distraction from her personal problems, when yet another supernatural problem begins brewing in the Windy City. It starts with the lake turning into a magic-sucking abyss and escalates from there. The vampires aren't to blame, but hostility is growing among humans toward the supes so Merit hopes to fix the problem before her people are blamed by the public.

I'm not going to tell you anything else, plotwise, although it's tempting. I am, however, going to try to address a couple of things in broad strokes. Very early on, I had a pretty strong feeling about who was causing the problems. But despite the fact that it felt a little predictable, I might have been ok with it, until the why of it was introduced. The why-part seemed wrong... a little contrived, even. And I hate to say that, because there were alot of things I really loved in this book.

We got the chance to learn more about the other supernatural races in the context of this world: from the nymphs and sirens to the Fae and, well, whatever the heck Tate is. I loved Luc and Lindsay. I loved Malik. And Jonah. But even in his abscense, Ethan's prescence is deeply felt... both by Merit and by me, as a reader. There a great deal of emotional resonance in this book and the big theme is loyalty: what it means to the different characters and whether they manage to hold on to it.

I'm going to give it a little more than 4 stars. I would have given it more, truly, if it weren't for the problems I had with the villain reveal. But definitely a must-read for any fan of the series.

The ending of HARD BITTEN was a bit of a fox in the hen house for most fans of the Chicagoland Vampires series. I had started the book impressed with the risks Neill takes with her characters, and the ending in no way changed that for me. Still, DRINK DEEP is the book that many will look to, for vindication or reparations. It was amazing how I could still reel on a book after I have written a full long review about it and mostly complaining about how the author chooses to end her story but well, here I am.
Moving on, soo moving on, the take-a-peek at the 5th book was brilliant way for the readers who are so forlorn about the 4th book to be convinced that there might be a chance for another ray of second hope for our beloved blond Master to be having his comeback. (What? Forlorn? Okay, maybe I’m having an overdose on those historical romance books nowadays. LOL) I for one anticipate the book with more enthusiasm than if anyone asked me two months ago or hell, even a week ago. Nice job for promoting the book! I will be looking forward for November to come.

Took me so long to finished the book because of review classes and duty in the hospital, (3-11 shift, baby! and yeah, I just eat and sleep for few hours in our house like I am a border! I arrive when everyone is sleeping and leave while they are not at home. Yes, drama queen huh? haha) but hey!!!, The blond, green-eyed Master we all love is soo back! I knew it, I knew it! Maybe Neill took pity on everyone of us and couldn't take our whining anymore. Lol.

Wouldn't make a very extensive review (as if this isn't extensive already, huh?), I mean I won't tell/spill much but I do love this series more and more!(though I do hate it when you killed Ethan back on book 4, you made my precious tears fall. haha!) Neill, you are genius! I mean come on guys, how many books have you read that doesn't involve revolving or repeating story lines?? Very few right?

Read the series and see for yourselves.

This is a hard book to review without giving spoilers as to what everyone is guessing about. The story itself is about Merit, Jonah, and company dealing with a magical entity causing (yet another) threat to the safety of Chicago. There is still the issue of the 'anti-supernatural' people to contend with; and the new Mayor is no friend to the sups. Two months after Ethan's death, Merit is still grieving, but continued close contact with Jonah as her new partner in investigation has her wondering...more This is a hard book to review without giving spoilers as to what everyone is guessing about. The story itself is about Merit, Jonah, and company dealing with a magical entity causing (yet another) threat to the safety of Chicago. There is still the issue of the 'anti-supernatural' people to contend with; and the new Mayor is no friend to the sups. Two months after Ethan's death, Merit is still grieving, but continued close contact with Jonah as her new partner in investigation has her wondering if it's time to move on with her life. Frank Cabot is still threatening Cadogan House with his strangling rules, and Mallory's sorcery 'Exams' are going badly, and in a different direction than Merit could ever anticipate. Magic was front and center in this particular story; and there were a couple of times where the vampires seemed weak and almost mortal. Although I really like the series, I’m not real crazy about the vampires Neill has created. I need my vampires to be vampires and not more or less humans with fangs.

The story was a little weak, especially in the middle part of the book; but a lot of the things happening in this one are things that affect the over-arcing reach of the series, and Merit herself. This book was obviously a bridge to the next one, where the sub-story regarding the Mallory dilemma will continue (and be the primary focus). Looks like the next book will be a road story, and the first time the series will go out of the Chicago area. I’m happy to see the story get out of Cadogan House, it was too much like a college frat/sorority house for my taste. The setup for the next book looks very promising. This wasn't the strongest or the best book in the series, but I enjoyed it; if for no other reason than the fact that it wrapped up a huge dangling plot thread for Merit. I didn't want that to keep dragging out over the next books. I’m not sure I bought the ending, but I’m glad it was worked out. It was not a cliff-hanger ending like the last book, but there were enough questions left unanswered to keep me anticipating the next book.

I was shocked at the end...looking forward to next in the series...maybe a HEA next time :) UPDATE: Now that you all have had a chance to get in there and mull around what I already knew...whadja think? I felt so frustrated through the whole book. Like the world was literally being torn apart. And THAT'S the sign of a good author. To FEEL the words, to SEE what she was attempting to impart. I am really glad I read KMM's Fever series before this book. Without the experience of her epic cliffhangers, I never would have had the faith in the author that is required to stick around for her next installment of this series. With an ending like that, I wanted to throw the book across the room at a wall and screech at the author, "What the heck are you thinking?!" I probably would have hurled it if I wasn't afraid my Nook would break :)

It is almost impossible to review this one without giving spoilers. The first part of the book was slow moving but in the last 50 pages things picked up and a lot happened. I am not sure how I feel about the big villain reveal.... You'll have to read to see what I mean..... I loved Jonah in this book. We get a lot of him which was definitely nice. I am still team Ethan all the way though!

Without Ethan there is no Chicagoland Vampires. It's like eating a pizza without the dough, or going skiing without the skis. Pointless and useless. I will tell you right now that if she does not sneak him back in, there will be alot of unhappy readers (myself included). And massive Rodney King size riots all over the world.... well not really.

I give up. I’m incapable of writing a short review. I was so excited for this book. I read books one through four in an obsessive haze, and was left in a stunned stupor when I finished Hard Bitten. Drink Deep is fast paced, exciting, funny. At times fun, and at times painful. Everything I've come to expect from a Chicagoland Vampires book. But it felt like half a book.

This was one of my most highly anticipated reads of the year, and also the one I was least looking forward to reviewing. Because how can I review it without giving away that thing you're not supposed to know? Because you can be sure there's one BIG THING people are dying to know. It's all to do with what happened in the last one. You know, the last one? With the thingy and the whatsit and the doo dah?

What I can tell you is that I enjoyed this book. I loved getting back to these characters, especially Merit. She's one of my favourite Urban Fantasy females. And even though she's having a tough time of it, she still maintains that strength of spirit and determination we grew to love in previous books.

The mystery element was particularly strong and was very well-executed. As you can see from the blurb, weird things are a-happening in Chicago, starting with Lake Michigan turning black. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Merit and her team work tirelessly to try and help the situation, even in the face of accusation from the humans that they're the ones responsible. They can't seem to do right for doing wrong where humans are concerned at the moment. This is further fuelled by the new Mayor. If you thought the last one was bad (which he kinda was) at least he was pro-supernaturals. This new one? She's got a face you'd never get tired of slapping.

Some of the secondary characters had time to shine this time as well. I feel like I got to know Jonah a lot more, and remembered just how much I love Lindsey's character. She has some great one-liners.

The reason this one isn't getting the full 5 star treatment is the ending. While I was happy with the events that took place, they felt very rushed. My emotions just didn't have time to catch up with how quickly everything got wrapped up, so this was a little disappointing.

I am really looking forward to the next one, however. Hopefully by then it will be slightly easier to talk about this series without everything you say being a potential spoiler. I'm pretty sure just acknowledging this book exists is some kind of spoiler. It's that much of a minefield.

Can't wait for the next one.
