Patty Gee’s Pentecostal faith gave her strength and happiness after her mother’s death. Her faith also pleases her father, a deeply troubled zealot. It’s easy to see why she clings to God. Her faith also makes her the target of bullies. One day Zenaida accuses Patty of looking at her boyfriend Tommy and punches her out. A Spanish-speaking black girl named Miggy comes to her aid, but Patty is too traumatized to respond. Overcome with the Holy Spirit at church on Sunday, Patty confesses to the con...more
One of the many hats I wear is as a youth pastor at my church, a Pentecostal Church of God church. So when I was reading a summary of this book I noticed that the main character was a teenage girl who just happened to be Pentecostal. I was interested to see how the author would represent a Pentecostal person.
The story is about a girl named Patty who lives with her over the top Pentecostal father and her Catholic grandmother. Patty takes her faith very serious. She befriends, Miggy, a Buddhist....more

jesus freakz + buddha punx is a novel about self-discovery, about acceptance, and most of all about friendship. I loved all the beautiful messages in the book, and, well, WOW.
Yes, this book is basically about religion and how to see things in different ways. The MC Patty is totally hung up on her Christian values- to the point that she’s always wondering if people are Saved. I was pretty surprised at how religious people CAN be- I’ve occasionally come across the overly religious person, but not...more

On the surface, this is one weird book: a very devout Protestant teen and her way-too-religious father live with her open-minded Catholic grandmother. After Patty is beaten up for looking at the wrong boy, she is befriended by Miggy, who is the total opposite of everything Patty has ever been taught is right. But Patty is determined to "save" Miggy from herself and the life she's chosen. Throw in a few more colorful characters and you've got a pretty good book.

In Jesus Freakz + Buddha Punx, M. E. Purfield takes us into the world of a teen whose life has been shattered by her mother's death and moving, but faith has held together - until now. Patty sees the world as godly or ungodly, saved or unsaved, no inbetween. But a new friend and secrets kept by her parents force her to question those beliefs. While on the surface this book is about a girl of religious faith, underneath is a story about growing up and evaluating the world for yourself.
This book had been on my to-read list for some time, so I was rather excited when I noticed it was a free download on Amazon. My excitement was short lived. I really tried to get into the story, but with such flat and uninspired characters and the fact that there wasn't much of a story to begin with it was hard to not skim through the last half of the book. Based on the reviews and description I really thought this book had potential. There was a message behind the story, I get that, however, it...more
This book was so entertaining, it kept me up late last night, rushing to finish it and find out what happened in the end. I liked Miggy best, she should get her own book :), Patty could use another book to let her wild side show through, I even liked Tommy, gee haven't we all fell for a guy like him at one time or another. Good thing I already have another book to read by M.E. Purfield, I'm already hooked.
