Before there was David McCullough, there was Carl Sandburg. Sandburg's portrayal of Lincoln across the span of his multi-volume biography as I imagine Lincoln would have thought of himself -- a son of the wilderness, with an intelligence derived as much from the lessons of life as the knowledge from books, and a storyteller always possessing another tale to tell. Sandburg is able to reflect both what made Lincoln an icon to his contemporaries as well as future generations while at the same time...more

Just finished reading this monster four volume set, inherited from the Grandma (RIP) collection. Like the best history books, it gives you all the facts, as directly sourced as possible but doesn't get bogged down in them. A great history writer, which Sandburg is(as too is Taylor Branch or William Shirer) gets the "story" part right too and can create a compelling atmospheric narrative even if sometimes he needs his main character's own help in using wit and personality to elevate some of the m...more

Carl August Sandburg was an American writer and editor, best known for his poetry. He won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for his poetry and another for a biography of Abraham Lincoln. H. L. Mencken called Carl Sandburg "indubitably an American in every pulse-beat".
