recommends it for:
Fans of science fiction, especially military SF
Longer, more involved and more intricate than the two preceding volumes, Trading in Danger and Marque and Reprisal, in the story of Kylara Vatta and her supporting cast of comrades, villains, and bit players. The military aspects of the story ring more true than in a lot of fiction, no doubt because the author, Elizabeth Moon, served in the Marine Corps. Her academic background in history helps with the grand politics and strategy that form the background and drive the story, too.

OK, now I'm a little annoyed at myself for starting the series. The books are getting worse as Moon tries to describe space battles without having any clue of the distances involved. The main character at one point worries about ship positioning errors of 1000 meters at a distance of light minutes because otherwise it might be accidentally hit by friendly fire from a beam weapon.
Hah.
And all the other weaknesses I've noted in reviews of the earlier books of the series are still present....more

Yet another galloping adventure with space-faring trader cum privateer (kind of like a pirate employed by a government) Ky Vatta. There was a lot going on in this one - we shift between Ky and her cousin Stella aboard another ship, and Ky is busily trying to raise defences against pirates and irritating entire planets in the process. This creates a great deal of tension between her and Stella, which is resolved in a realistic way. There was a cool battle near the end, and Ky is becoming more ...more

The saga continues, and again the author highlights an interesting variety of cultures, in this case one in which rudeness is a serious crime. This might seem silly at first, but it also might be a valid response in a colony situation in which people had to get along in order to survive.
As the author continues to examine the various ways in which groups and societies react to conflict and threats, she keeps the reader entertained with a good action story. There is a thread of a mystery plot l...more

This is the weakest of the series so far - I feel like anvils are dropping on my head and I just can't quite care as much about the future of the family. I am - tired of so much perfection. I definitely want to continue on, but I find it easy to wait for the price drop into paperback.

It's getting better ... but it would've benefitted from some serious editing ... the first 3 books would probably have been better if they had been condensed to 2 ...

Actually this is the one we started reading on our trip. I finished book #3 before we left. It was a good one to read out loud together.
