Shelves: a-series-i-use-to-know

So first formal thoughts and all that jazz: I liked it, i thought that it was a very interesting read with original ideas, and its a book that won't leave you bored and waiting for something to happen. The characters are interesting and fun to read. The romance is budding but there...slightly. This was hard for me to rate because as much as i liked it there were quite a few things that i wanted more from or things to change. i'll explain later on.

Okay so now for more in depth reviewin' time. The characters are interesting and fun to read. The romance is budding but there...slightly. This was hard for me to rate because as much as i liked it there were quite a few things that i wanted more from or things to change. i'll explain later on.

Okay so now for more in depth reviewin' time. As i mentioned before i though that the plot was very original and interesting to read. Katie is a normal girl trying to live a normal life when suddenly there is a kid claiming to be her son....So when i first saw this in a review i sort of freaked out and was about to back out reading this but wait! Don't leave yet! if you are like me and well i am strange and i don't really like the oh i have kids and an ex-husband kind of story, well calm down the kid is explained. Anyways this starts off a whole line of problems. I've read in other reviews when looking at this book also that people were saying how Rhyn was cra-cra to the max but again calm down, i think i would be a bit cra-cra too if i spent the last 1000 years in Hell. So these two meet in a strange way. So since i am sort of talking about them anyways lets move on to characters.

Characters

Katie: Okay so we don't find out her age until about more than half way through the book and by the time i found out she was 18 - yeah 18 years old - i had honestly thought she was AT LEAST 21 years old. It wasn't the drinking that bothered me and that is why i thought she was older than she was, no it was her character as a person. She was very mature, living on her own with furniture, and etc, etc, she works as an assistant manager at a fast-food place but her sister (older? i'm pretty certain on that) and her soon to be husband get down on her for having the normal job of a person this age. sorry that was one of things that bothered me. Katie is remarkable, i think if i was in her situation i would have cracked after a child started telling people that i was their mother....

but the thing is which i suppose this should have gone in plot...whatever is that things weren't that well explained i guess is a good way to put it, when things start to change for Katie it happens suddenly and we don't get like an in depth explanation and i read a lot of paranormal so i mean i wasn't that lost but if this is your first experience with paranormal i might suggest trying out other stuff first then coming back to this. I am still not even entirely sure i know what Rhyn's brothers are, i know what he is... they just say immortals or ancients.... but they drink blood? i thought that was just a Rhyn thing because he is half demon....opps.... well i think you know that already...

okay i am going to move on from Katie and go to Rhyn: He is like i said before stuck in Hell and people think that he is automatically evil. Well Rhyn is an asshole but he is protective, possessive, and overbearing at times. Well i could see when the reader gets to his POV shifts we get to see a totally new side of him that i like. Though even the book says this he is a man of few words what he does say is important and to the point. He will piss you off, he will make you wish you could punch him in the face, but he will also make you want to grab the front of his shirt and kiss him senseless...;)

Gabe is the other bigger character (there are others but it is late and i am tired so this is going to be a quick review) i really liked Gabe i think there is a spin off series for him that once i am finished with this trilogy i will be checking his book out.

So the ending... well it was unexpected to be honest. Not just for the book but for my entire reading experience i don't think i have ever run into something like this before...it made me wonder but i am not going to give away anything about what it is. I don't think anyone needs to worry about cliffhangers here because the next one is out, and i think the last one is out as well but yeah its a bit cliffhanger-y. but not to bad.

SO let me just say what worked for me, (what I liked) and what did not work for me.
What worked for me:
I liked the world within the book. The levels of demons, ancients and human interactions.
What did not work for me:
As I say in my reading updates, this story is riddled with missing words, missing elements in the action, missing parts to conversations, and so many inconsistencies where the character would say something in the beginning of the story only to contradict that as the story progresses.
While each character is unique and original there are so many personality flaws to these characters that even at the end of the story I did not like any of them. They all were un-relatable, unrealistic, and down right obnoxious. If I can not get myself to care about (bond with) the characters then the story falls flat.
Next the abuse and violence in this story is unacceptable to a reasonable individual. This book needs to be tagged with abuse, dubious consent, and the BDSM Theme of Domination/submission.
I see that two GR members tagged this Young Adult. This is Not young adult genre material.
The romance is not a romance. It is being beaten and raped (by one of the brothers), feed upon by most all of the brothers (vampire), humiliated by all the brothers, intimidated, threatened with torture and death by all of the brothers, yet somehow the main character feels that the least offending brother and her are true mates and that she loves him? Wow talk about disturbing.
And Finally, this story has ZERO plot resolution. It just ends. You know there is (will be) more to the story because nothing and I mean nothing gets resolved. But to use an old quote "Frankly my dear, I do not give a damn." Let this nonsense continue on without me.
So do I recommend this book. NO! Skip this download, unless of course your into this kind of thing. But you have been warned by this reviewer who found this to be disturbing. (less)

Lizzy was kind enough to give me the books in this series to read and review, and I must say I wasn't disappointed (I'm never disappointed with Lizzy's work). Paranormal romance isn't something I'd normally pick up, but the blurb about being lumbered with a mysterious child intrigued me and the first chapter or two, with Katie trying to work out how she has suddenly become the mother of a five-year-old, sucked me in.

This is the first Lizzy Ford book that I have read, and I have to say I was pretty much sucked into the story from the first. I think that parenting makes your humor shift a bit, because I'm sorry but I died laughing at the beginning of this book. First Katie gets pulled over by a cop on her way to work at the ungodly hour of around 4:30 am. She was speeding(37 in a 35) and had a tail light out. This really tickled me because after the officer was through with her she had a lot of charges and an extremely expensive ticket. So I was still chuckling about the cop when she hops on the train to continue her journey to work. She had a headache coming on and was pushed out of the way rather rudely by a child around the age of 5 years old that hopped on the train at the next stop. Since becoming a mother, you realize that children will always embarrass you and that majority of the innocent things they do are annoying or rude to most people. So as she is about to get off the train, this child (Toby) starts screaming for his Mama. Katie thinks nothing of it, maybe the child's mother was in front of her, until the little boy latches on to her. Katie is shocked but wants to help the child and asks him his name. By this time the child has made such a scene that several people have stopped to watch. So she asks him about his mother and Toby begins to cry rather loudly. He was claiming that she was his mother and that she was trying to leave him on the train. Katie is at a loss. She knows she has no children and thinks maybe the child has mistaken her for someone that either looks like her or has on the same outfit. Its logical right? By this time, several people have made rather rude comments and judgemental remarks, the police officer has gotten involved. He has asked for both of their ID's and sure enough the names match, as well as the addresses. Needless to say Katie was on her way very shortly afterwards to the police station. Now at this point your either going, WTF? or your like me and rolling on the ground. Talk about the worst case scenario on a Monday morning commute? So what I have described hasn't gotten us out of the first chapter and I am already completely hooked.

So I loved Katie. She was a straight talking, no nonsense or drama, snarky, sarcastic, roll with the punches kind of chick. In short? She rocked. She wasn't a supreme fighter or loaded with supernatural skills, or even drop dead beautiful but more of an outcast. My kind of unlikely heroine. This book covers a lot of info about both worlds, and the intermediates between, in a very entertaining and completely delightful way. When your not laughing at the twisted humor, your sitting on the edge of your seat wondering if Katie is ever going to get a break. LOL..So far...NO.

Lizzy, where have you been? You have put a completely fresh spin on the immortal realm and I haven't enjoyed a book this much since Larissa Ione's Demonica series. But without the sex :) I enjoyed it so much in fact that as I was completely engrossed in the second book, I ignored my email until I finished. I was at my wits ends needing to know what was going to happen to Katie and getting ready to go buy the third book. I had an email from Lizzy wanting to know if I would like a copy of the 3rd book and I literally screamed in excitement!!!!! This was 5:30 this morning, and I had to get up at 8 to go to work :)!! This series was well worth the loss of sleep!!! Lizzy's books are on tour right now and she will be with me tomorrow for a guest post and giveaway!! Paranormal fans you don't want to miss the opportunity to check out this series. Lizzy has captured yet another adoring fan in me!!!

Hmmmmm this was a really hard book to rate. The first 60% of the book I found myself wanting to put it down and give up. Barely anything got explained properly and I got sick of Katie being a hysterical mess. It also takes ages for Katie and Rhyn to even meet, and when they do he's some rabid beast who torments her through prison cell bars even after she's basically had her throat torn out by his sadistic brother. His other brother Kris also annoyed me to no end, he was such an ass.

Katie's Hellion, to me, is one of those books.

Here's how I stumbled upon this little treasure. I was perusing Amazon the other day and Katie's Hellion was up as a free read. Why not I thought, the reviews looked good and the premise was intriguing... so I downloaded... and then I read, and couldn't stop reading, and now I'm freaking desperate for the next installment.

Oh yes I should say that Katie's Hellion is part of a trilogy called 'Rhyn Trilogy' and a quick surf has shown that book two isn't finished yet. I bloody hope Lizzy Ford gets a move on because I want to know what happens NOW!

I've sat here tonight trying to understand what exactly it is about this book that I loved so much and I think it's a combination of several things. An intriguing storyline, a likeable hero and heroine and the writing style of the author. She also created a heroine that questioned and rallied and didn't just accept her fate and I like that. Oh, and the secondary characters were fab, I want them all to have their own stories! In the end all this worked so well and I read, read, read, desperate to know what happened. She left me on a freaking cliffhanger though! Urggg... but I'll wait, and book two will be all the more satisfying for it.

Now don't get me wrong Katie's Hellion was not without faults. The complex world Lizzy has created took a little while to get my head around and I felt like she could have explained it a whole lot better and moved the reader along with her a whole lot easier. The beginning was also a little rushed and she glossed over the heroine's emotions a little I felt. I'd have liked a bigger build up, but then I'm a build up kinda girl. What else? Well some parts were a little repetitive, phrases and whatnot and the sex scenes were sweet rather than smoking--but then this is billed as suitable for YA, so I mustn't complain.

Overall I love it, just in case you haven't picked up on that yet, and it is a clear 5 hearts. I WANT more, more, more!!! Now!!!!

Don’t let that cloud your opinion of it; it’s actually not a bad fantasy novel, so far as self-insert female leads go. I say this, because it is clearly what Katie was written to be, or at least I hope she was; a character that flat can only hope to be a one-size-fits-all girl, especially when coupled with a man for whom she cannot contain her overwhelming lust. A staple, so far as I am concerned...more I’m going to go with eehhh. Let’s be honest here, I got this book for my kindle because it was free. A staple, so far as I am concerned, in non-Mary Sue popularised fantasy romance novels. Katie has her flaws, as do all of the characters, I can see that. The author has clearly tried to steer away from the virtuous girl with a dark past she is trying to hide from (also a fantasy romance staple), but in doing so, Katie has minimal depth. Hell, even the history the mysterious Ancients gave to her had more depth.
But I’m being unfair. If we ignore the single handed ability the main characters have to set back female characters in fantasy around ten years, the book isn’t that bad. I mean, seriously, this chick just stands there and takes everything that is thrown at her and then goes back to the dick that caused it. Fine, go down the Stockholm syndrome explanation if you want to, but Katie’s entire being seems to gravitate around accepting all of the crap the world throws at her while chugging down whiskey, chomping on pills and bitching about it in a badly written inner monologue. If you’re going to have a lead, at least have her do something that adds to the story, rather than just being the dressmaker’s dummy that the thing just hangs on before it can be fixed.
All in all, I’d giving Katie’s Hellion 3*. It’s not the most well written book out there and if I could meet the main character, she would swiftly become associated with my fist, but as a bit of escapist fluff, it’s not so bad. I have read much worse and while Katie’s Hellion isn’t going to be pushing back any boundaries, it’s not going to send female characters back to the stone age, whatever my feeling on the matter may be.

Katie is having a really bad morning, she is pulled over for driving two miles over the speed limit and with a broken tail light. Then a child she doesn't know follows her and everyone insists that he is her son. Katie is a pill popping, whiskey swilling 18-year-old and she is supposed to have a 5-year-old son. When Katie left her apartment that morning, she didn't have a son, after meeting Toby for the first time and returning with him she finds that her apartment has been transformed with toys, drawings, furniture and pictures as if he belonged there, though Katie has no memory of him. Katie's sister says she is having amnesia issues and should call her doctor.

Gabriel, the death dealer follows Katie and hangs around her apartment freaking her out. He tells her that she wasn't supposed to remember her life before Toby showed up. But Katie is an immortal mate, an Ancient's mate and immune to immortal magic.

“She’d been seen by a doctor who’d been dead twenty years, was babysitting a four-hundred-thousand-year-old angel, and the grim reaper spent the night on her couch. Things really couldn’t get much stranger.”

"It’s a long story, one you don’t necessarily need to know to understand your circumstances. My brother’s people found you and identified your unique gift for…blocking their natural talents. It makes you valuable and dangerous. If our enemies find you, they can take your blood and modify the creatures who work for them to make them immune to us."

Lizzy Ford exceptionally draws the reader into Katie's story. I was fascinated by the world building and Lizzy Ford's voice. I liked how flawed Katie was, which made her more interesting.

Katie is kidnapped and thrown into Hell in the cell right across from Rhyn.

Once Rhyn claims Katie things start getting exciting. Poor Katie has a really hard time associating with these immortal demonic creatures. They are really rough with her and it seems like every two pages she is bloody and beaten. But she is tough and never stops the whiskey swilling and wise cracking.

I really liked the intimacy between Rhyn and Katie, they are both so broken and flawed. Rhyn starts to thaw and care for Katie at the same time Katie wants to give him up and his world. The immortal world is too dangerous for Katie, she wants her humdrum existence back. But Rhyn is willing to fight for her and keep her safe, he just doesn't know how. This is the first book in the trilogy and I hope that by the end of the third book Katie and Rhyn end up together, happy and safe. I like the two of them and I definitely like them together. Katie and Rhyn can save each other, I just know it, if they can figure out a way to keep Katie alive and Rhyn from destroying the world. But if it was easy, it wouldn't be interesting.

Loved this book!! The only catch about this book is you really have to read at least half of it to really get sucked into this interesting world of immortals. I was frustrated in the beginning because I really was kind of confused taking in this whole new world. The immortals are not your typical "vampires" or "werewolves" or whatever. The author Lizzy Ford really creates something new and interesting and I think that the reason it takes so long for the plot to really begin is because the reader...more

Sasha then attacks her ripping her throat to pieces and also it seems sexually assaults her. she is magically healed and then escapes with the help of Rhyn who then kidnaps her, drinks her blood and claims her with a magical tattoo of his name really obviously around her neck.
Things go from bad to worse and to heal Rhyn, she lets him drink her blood, and he mangles her arm beyond recognition. He takes her to a sanctuary for healing to save her life.
She then casts her lot in with the ancients in the fight for good against evil.

There was a good idea in the middle of all this. One of the main problems was the lack of exposition. The world building was incomplete, there were really big jumps in the story ie how/why did Andre get killed; why do all the ancients drink human blood; why does she fall for Rhyn

Katie takes everything too much in her stride. The attack by Sasha is brushed over and has no lasting effect. The fact that she appears to have been repeatedly mutilated by having her neck torn apart and her fore arm totally mangled doesn't seem to bother her too much. Likewise the hideous tattoo around what's left of her neck, is treated with an amazing degree of sang froid. Personally, I would not have taken this well and I would be screaming for the plastic surgeon/ a magic cure etc and trying to get as far away from these monsters as possible. not offering my neck for further munchies and mutilation!

Another really good entry from Lizzy Ford. The more I read her stuff the more I like it.

This is the first of a trilogy. This book is setting the stage; we have good character development and an interesting plot.
Others have said that the story starts off slow...I would not say it starts off slow as much as I would say that this is a book that could have a LOT of depth of characters written or added in.
And I have a feeling that is what book 2 and 3 are for. I suspect we will not get full closure...more

I liked it! It was a bit odd in the beginning for me, but I got into the story line. It's an age-old plot basis about the ever-present battle between good and evil. Honestly, it's the first book that's categorized as a "fantasy" book that I've liked, and finished. The 2nd book won't be out until next month...wondering where it'll take Rhyn, Katie, Kris, and all the other characters.

I first of course want to say thanks for the chance to read and review a new book from a first-reads giveaway. I am a little torn on how many stars to give this book. Let me start with a positive. I like the strength of our main guy Rhyn. He is honorable (in an oddish way), strong, complex, handsome and very tall. This character takes awhile to understand. First I thought he was just a good guy whose misunderstood and done some little wrongs. Katie is similar to Rhyn in some ways. Again, thought she was just misunderstood and not real ambitious. Turns out she's really strong and wants to do good despite not totally understanding who is good and who is not.
This book is a good at making you think and try to figure out some different grey areas. The world in this book is not black and white at all. I liked the love story part and the people struggling and overcoming their weaknesses. Good verses evil and all that stuff.

Now I'm afraid I have to give a couple negatives. This book is very descriptive with the capture scenes and is much racier than what I am comfortable reading. She is abused more than once and it really isn't pretty. More information than I needed. The other thing that I was dissapointed in was the language. The "F bomb" is used alot. I think that when people use such mindless phrases it really makes them seem stupid. (The characters and not the author by the way.) How hard is it to come up with something better than a 4 letter word?
I get grossed out by gay relationships too so the references to Kris's lover Jade was a major turn off. I also hate submission crap too.

I realize this review looks like I had a lot of negative but I really did like the book. I just would've enjoyed it more if there werent' some of those things. That being said... I'm going to have to give this 3 1/2 stars in hope that the next one will be better.

****SPOILER ALERT****
I hate the ending to this story! I need to have a good, everybody in love ends up with the perfect person, wrapped up ending with just a good opening for the second book. This one makes me want to read the last page first to all my books to make sure the endings are ok. :) So for now I'll just have to wait to read #2 and hope the negatives are gone and the next one ends well.

Thanks again for the opportunity! BTW...When are the second and third books to this trilogy coming out?

The only thing that kept this from getting a 1 star rating was that I kept reading it. The writing was abysmal and immature. I rolled my eyes several times per page. The characters and plot were not developed enough and she really needs to spend more time building her world or at least explaining it better. There was something that kept me reading however. It might just be that it was a unique premise and I wanted to see where she was going with it. I wanted to like her main character but I just...more

Excellent. It's refreshing to see a story plot that's unique.

this is far from book genres I usually read, but it made me keep reading until I finished the book!

"I respect the Code. Doesn’t mean I always have to follow it." love Rhyn's character he seemed to care to no one but still end up helping everyone eventhough they think of him as low creature.

I feel sorry for Katie when she's bragged into other side of the world, she's weak in her human body, but she's strong inside. The bravest, weirdest of all times.

Katie's Hellion (Rhyn Trilogy #1)

This is the first book I've read by Lizzy Ford, I must say I really enjoyed her writing and this series has left me wanting to go read all of her books.

I will admit and many have said the first part of the book is abit slow and wordy if that makes sense, I even wanted to put it down a few times, but don't do that.....once you get past the first few chapters it flows extremely well.

Well now I need to find more money so I can buy the other books to this series! I want to know what happens next!!!
Poor Katie has a sucky life and things just got worse. Imagine one day being young,single, living on your own and the next still being young and single but having a five year old son....wtf, right?! I enjoyed reading Katie's Hellion. Lizzy is very descriptive of her characters and you can't help but fall in love with them. I don't know if I like Gabriel or Rhyn more...hot yummy good...more
