Aren Montrell has heard tales of the Oestend wraiths – mysterious creatures which come in the night and kill anyone who’s not indoors. Aren’s never had reason to believe the stories, but when he takes a job as a bookkeeper on the BarChi, a dusty cattle ranch on the remote Oestend prairie, he soon learns that the wraiths are real. Aren suddenly finds himself living in a sup...more

Excellent kinky scifi m/m romance with cowboys. Weirdly, I'm not a big fan of scifi and even less of a fan of cowboy books, but this just completely worked for me. It's about an artist who takes a job as a bookkeeper for a ranch on the other side of the world so he can get away from his past at the university. He finds himself unprepared for his new life, but he slowly finds his way and makes his place at the ranch as he befriends the reclusive foreman.

I wasn't going to read this book. Even though there isn't a Marie Sexton book I haven't loved, I just didn't think I would like this. I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction. I want my books to be contemporary. Even though I love cowboys (who doesn't, right?) I want them set in the now, not the then. Even though I like paranormal, again, I want it contemporary. I don't like ghost stories and I really thought there was to much mixed together to enjoy. So this book is everything I thought I would...more

I don't know if I should ignore HC for a few days - she could have warned me...

I made the mistake of starting this book just after midnight, I had the intentions of only reading a few pages before going to sleep....I finished it at 5am in the freakin morning.

THEN I woke up with a bad headache that morphed into a migraine which morphed into me laying in bed near death all of yesterday.

I blame it ALL on HC

SO as for the review.

This book ROCKED - go buy it - then read it - DURING THE DAYTIME!!!

I liked just about everything about this book. The majority of the characters, how it took its time to develop, how it hit my kinky buttons, the twists that surprised me and kept me guessing. I worried a little when going into the last chapter I still had questions, but nope, they were all answered. The only thing I would like now is an update on Frances...and maybe Dante.

7 stars??

First of all, I will say Marie's Coda Series, for me, were OK, nothing to be that crazy about (I know, I know, I'm weird).
I had my doubts if I really wanted to read this book, I'm so glad I did.
this story is one of the best I have read in a long time, I'm very, very impressed with this Author.
I just can't believe how fantastic this story was, the plot terrific..and it was so fricking Sensual I just can't put into the right words to give this story the full justice that it deserves.

I'm a huge Marie Sexton fan and she doesn't disappoint in Song of Oestend.

I enjoyed the strange, eerie world of wraiths and magic Marie has created. Nothing too overtly paranormal with enough references to the familiar that it never felt too over the top.
What I love most about Marie's work is her wonderful characterization and Deacon and Aren were so human in their strengths and frailties, so real... each finding in the other the courage and confidence not only to survive their harsh surrounds...more

Heather C has written a spot-on review for Song of Oestend.
I agree to 95%.

My two cents...

I think the sparse worldbuilding was enough - just added fuel to the subtle, creeping horror of the ghost-story part in the book.No cheap effects here and it wasn`t overly gory - it were the characters`s palpable fears of the unknown and "why?" that made it so scary.

The build up of the romance was very slow, but the "wait" was so worth it.Time enough to make the growing love and desire between Aren an...more

Wow I really don't know how to begin describing this book. It was wonderful. So completely different to anything I've read before. I loved it!

Firstly, I love the world it's set in. It's like a mix of historical America with the fantasy elements giving it an other-worldly feel. Most of the story takes place at the BarChi, a cattle ranch in Oestend, and in Oestend you can not go out after dark or the invisible creatures known as wraiths will kill you. Symbolism plays a large role in this book and...more

Different and Refreshing...I loved it!!!

This book is probably not like any other book I have ever read before. Its kind of a historical-fantasy-alternate reality-romance that doesn't involve a huge amount of world building. Yeah, it is historical like, but it is set in a time and place where homosexuality seems to be easily acceptable. The set up is a little slow paced, but you have to realize, it is set at BarChi, a cattle ranch on the Oestend praire. And on Oestend, wraiths come out and kill a...more

Aren has fled from an untenable position, his new home on Oestend seems like his dream come true and having some eye candy like Deacon to look at doesn’t hurt. When Deacon collect’s the new book keeper he doesn’t think he will last a month.

This is a sweet love story that is worked into a very well written fantasy world. When we first meet Aren he doesn’t believe in the wraiths but it is not long before we f...more

SlashReaders : So, I bought this book a while back and didn't get around to reading. Then when I came back to it was a little put off by the wording of the blub. However, I was quiet happily surprised by the complexity of this novel. The plot is carefully crafted and layered nicely and the characters are well formed from those in the lime light to all auxiliary personal.

This book covers a lot of different realms and ideas, which makes the originality of it stand out. Set it another world that re...more

Oh, where to start?

Aren is such a contradiction; he describes himself as having allowed others to use his body for sex, having subsumed his pride in service to his desire. He's been disinherited by his family for his proclivities, he's been turned into a pariah and, ultimately, shipped off to an entirely new country when his lover got bored with him. And yet, he's strong, in his own way, and has the courage of his convictions, such as they are. He's determined to make a new life for himself, ho...more

I didn’t really know what to expect from this fantasy gay western romance, fantasy and western seemed a strange pair, but I have to admit the author blended them in a perfect way, avoiding any friction between the genres.

Aren comes from a wealthy family, boarding school, good college, but I gathered they were not so tight or supporting of their own son. Aren is orphaned by mother, sent to boarding school as a little child, it was quite obvious that he lacked a fatherly figure. Abused by older ki...more

Cover - Nothing special, bare torso, bare back - sort of an odd juxtaposition. The picture of the setting is pretty spot-on, I think.

MC's - Aren - artist and bookkeeper; Deacon - ranch manager. POV is Aren's third person.

I'm categorizing this as post-apocalyptic, although I'm not sure that's how it's meant - this could be a fantasy in that it's a made-up world. It has the feel of a post-apocalyptic though. There is the continent, where Aren had been a university student, with bustling cities. Th...more

Great book. Despite the slow start I soon couldn't stop reading. Both Aren and Deacon were really interesting characters - and just how often do you meet a book keeper as a main charter? Plus both changed and grew such a lot in a short space of time. Their relationship and the sex (once they got there) was tender and very hot.

Yes, there was quite a lot of violence but I feel it has to be seen in the context of the remote frontier type of setting. Did I want more world building? NO, it was just...more

Marie Sexton, don't ever stop writing. Please.

I was predisposed to feel all kinds of icky for this book because there's an m/m/m warning. As much as I love Marie Sexton, I really don't enjoy it when she makes her main couples in the story do things with other man (such as what her Coda series characters Zach and Angelo do). So when I first heard about the book, I didn't rush to the front line to grab it and read it. But I came around because I love Ms. Sexton's writing too much to pass up this o...more

When Aren leaves behind a user ex-boyfriend to take a job as a bookkeeper in the small secluded town of Oestend he brings plenty of baggage...both literal and figurative! It's a good thing tall sexy Deacon is there to help him with the burden. Aren, however, quickly discovers life in the ranch is dangerous and lonely but he's determined to make it work. He convinces Deacon to let him move into his abandoned and haunted house. He sharpens his body with
physical labor, his mind with painting and s...more

I've loved all of Sexton's books, and I'm happy to add this one to the list. I had misgivings about buying it since it was billed as a paranormal - I've not had good experiences with m/m paranormals. In my impression, they've been poorly written vamp/were stories with little plot and generic sex scenes. But Sexton's writing was brilliant as always.

The heroes - Aren and Deacon - are engaging characters with moving backstories and resulting emotional issues that affect their budding relationship....more

Marie Sexton proves once again, why she is one my favorite MM authors. At first, I was reluctant to even get near this book, due to the readers advisory. Not because of the D/s tone but more on the m/m/m warning. It's not my thing, not in romance anyway. But, a friend reassured me that Marie Sexton did a good job, so I decided to give it ago.

AND OMG!!! I am so glad that I do.

Song of Oestend sets in an alternate reality, where violence is accepted as common ... but it also feels like it sets in a...more

Marie Sexton's books never let me down, and this book was no exception. This story is a twist on the standard m/m romance with a fantasy world much like the old wild west with cowboys and ranches, but in a world where wraiths could kill those unprotected once the sun went down. This is a back drop to a wonderful coming of age story for two men. One, Aren, was a smaller man who had been taken advantage of sexually because of his size and insecurities. He heads west to Oestend to be a bookkeeper o...more

I went into this book with few expectations. For once I didn't read many reviews - didn't bother because Marie Sexton is pretty much an auto-buy author for me, even if I was slow to get to get to this one. And after a few pages of "Huh, this is different..." I was hooked.

This was an intriguing mix of the familiar and the unique. It had a strong feel of stories of the American west in the early days of colonization, with the rough ranch life, the extermination of the native population, the harsh...more

I like this book a lot, loved the world it took place in, the creepy factor, the gore and violence, loved the characters and the love story.
I don't really like to read books with BDSM but I was told this one was different then what one would expect...and I must admit the sex scenes were very well written.
I have though a huge problem with one or both characters sharing their bed with a third party....there was only once it happened in this book and despite how well written and how hot the scene...more

I'm a big Marie Sexton fan and this book did not disappoint.

Aren Montrell has just left his life at the university to work at the BarChi ranch as an accountant. Aren is not a ranch hand so he doesn't fit in with the other hands, and he doesn't fit in with the ranch owner and his family. After leaving his lover at the university, Aren is lonely and feeling a little out of his element until he builds a friendship with the enigmatic Deacon, the ranch foreman.

Oestend is an interesting place where w...more

Wow, what to say about this one? It really is interesting how much of an effect personal taste has on reactions to books.

I adored this! I was hooked right off with the perfectly-toned narration. I had gathered from the blurb and from some reviews this was sort of ghost-y and sort of cowboy-y, set in a fantasy/AU version of the old west. The tone for that was set right from the start, and Aren was the perfect PoV to discover that world through.

Arriving in Oestend with Aren and discovering and lea...more

Niiiice! I have to say that after reading the awful, incorrectly portrayed BDSM of 50 Shades, I've been lucky enough to cleanse my BDSM palate with a couple of excellent kinky tales, including this one. And again, this was a surprise, because I had no idea that it would play such a huge role in Song of Oestend.

There was really so much to enjoy here. Two great main characters, Aren and Deacon, who are definitely not anywhere near cookie-cutter stereotypes, even role reversal stereotypes (ie: litt...more

There are so many reviews on this wonderful book, so I will just say it has all my favorite elements: a D/s relationship, a paranormal twist with the wraiths, character depth with lots of interesting supporting characters and a GREAT, mysterious plot. Did I mention the romance was fabulous too?

Great book. Highly recommend!!

I have to admit when Marie told me what she was writing I was skeptical. But it was Marie and if there is one thing about her I love; is her writing. Well, I was blown out of the water with this story. I have never been one on alternate reality, but this book : WOW!! The suspense, now you know when you watch a movie and you say don't do, don't open that door! Well, I can say I was doing it while reading this book, it was so suspensful. I even wanted to close my eyes at one scene but I couldn't o...more

I adore Marie Sexton, have read all her books, and this one was not a disappointment--it was a great story with great characters. Although I love the "Promises" series, this book and Sexton's other fantasies--"Blind Space," "Cinder"--hold a special place in my heart because of the way they allow love to be love, whether the people who share it are male or female. When Deacon and Aren decide to be together, the fact that they're both men is not a cause for censure or anger or disappointment, exce...more

Marie Sexton lives in Colorado. She’s a fan of just about anything that involves muscular young men piling on top of each other. In particular, she loves the Denver Broncos and enjoys going to the games with her husband. Her imaginary friends often tag along. Marie has one daughter, two cats, and one dog, all of whom seem bent on destroying what remains of her sanity. She loves them anyway.
